    Notes: A strong case has been made by several authors that sharp, spherically symmetric shocks converging on the center of a spherical bubble driven by a strong acoustic field give rise to rapid compression and heating that produces the brief flash of light known as sonoluminescence. The formation of such shocks is considered. It is found that, although at the main collapse the bubble wall does indeed launch an inwardly-traveling compression wave, and although the subsequent reflection of the wave at the bubble center produces a very rapid temperature peak, the wave is prevented from steepening into a sharp shock by an adverse gradient in the sound speed caused by heat transfer. It is shown that the mathematical characteristics of the flow can be prevented from accumulating into a shock front by this adverse sound speed gradient. A range of results is presented for a variety of bubble ambient radii and sound field amplitudes suggested by experiments. The time scale of the peak temperature in the bubble is set by the dynamics of the compression wave: this is typically in the range 100–300 ps (FWHM) in concert with recent measurements of the sonoluminescence pulse width. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Very low temperature pressure broadening parameters and cross sections for the J=0–1 rotational transition of DCl broadened by helium are presented. Data was taken using a collisionally cooled cell and measured cross sections range from 10.76 A(ring)2 at 4.21 K to 8.10 A(ring)2 at 1.85 K. This compares with a 300 K cross section of 9.36 A(ring)2. Predictions from two currently available anisotropic He–DCl potentials do not reproduce accurately the experimental results. Modifications were made to one of these potentials to reproduce more accurately both the observed low temperature and 300 K pressure broadening cross sections. The resulting modified potential has a well depth De=32.7 cm−1 at a separation Re=3.46 A(ring) in the linear He–Cl–D configuration.

    Notes: A new model is presented for the gas dynamics within a bubble at conditions that lead to the phenomenon of sonoluminescence. The spherically symmetric Navier–Stokes equations with variable properties are solved together with momentum and energy equations in the liquid. Calculations are presented for bubbles of argon, helium, and xenon in liquid water. The first main result is that in contrast to recent models of air bubbles in water, there are no sharp shocks focusing at the origin of the bubble. An alternative mechanism for energy focusing in noble gas bubbles is proposed that is consistent with a smooth onset of sonoluminescence with increasing acoustic forcing, as observed in experiments. The second main result concerns an observed correlation between sonoluminescence intensity and the thermal conductivity of the gas, which suggests that heat transfer plays a dominant role in the focusing of acoustic energy. It is shown instead that mechanical effects associated with the molecular mass of the gas figure prominently in determining the peak temperatures and pressures in the bubble, when the bubble is forced strongly enough to engender wavy disturbances that focus on the bubble center. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: An electrode contact scheme based on the use of an organic LiF alloy is investigated. The performance of organic light emitting diodes (OLED) with this contact scheme in both heterojunction and bipolar transport/emitting layer (BTEL) OLED structures are compared with their counterparts with LiF buffer layers. The organic LiF contact scheme improved device reliability of BTEL OLEDs by 32% to 92 500 h while adversely affecting device reliability of heterojunction OLEDs. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A structure based on a bipolar transport/emitting layer is proposed and implemented for making organic light-emitting diodes. Compared to the conventional heterojunction organic light-emitting diodes, more than a factor of six improvement in device reliability (a projected operating lifetime of 70 000 h) is achieved in the structure. The significant improvement in device lifetime is attributed to the elimination of the heterointerface present in the conventional devices which greatly affects the device reliability. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Recent evidence indicates that testosterone is neuroprotective, however, the underlying mechanism(s) remains to be elucidated. In this study, we investigated the hypothesis that androgens induce mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling in neurons, which subsequently drives neuroprotection. We observed that testosterone and its non-aromatizable metabolite dihydrotestosterone (DHT) rapidly and transiently activate MAPK in cultured hippocampal neurons, as evidenced by phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK)-1 and ERK-2. Importantly, pharmacological suppression of MAPK/ERK signaling blocked androgen-mediated neuroprotection against β-amyloid toxicity. Androgen activation of MAPK/ERK and neuroprotection also was observed in PC12 cells stably transfected with androgen receptor (AR), but in neither wild-type nor empty vector-transfected PC12 cells. Downstream of ERK phosphorylation, we observed that DHT sequentially increases p90 kDa ribosomal S6 kinase (Rsk) phosphorylation and phosphorylation-dependent inactivation of Bcl-2-associated death protein (Bad). Prevention of androgen-induced phosphorylation of Rsk and Bad blocked androgen neuroprotection. These findings demonstrate AR-dependent androgen activation of MAPK/ERK signaling in neurons, and specifically identify a neuroprotective pathway involving downstream activation of Rsk and inactivation of Bad. Elucidation of androgen-mediated neural signaling cascades will provide important insights into the mechanisms of androgen action in brain, and may present a framework for therapeutic intervention of age-related neurodegenerative disorders.

    Notes: This study evaluated the impact of the atrioventricular delay (AVD) on the pulmonary venous flow pattern (PVFP). Methods: Transthoracic Doppler PVFP were obtained during atrial and ventricular pacing at a fixed rate of 70 beats/min in 20 patients equipped with a DDD pacemaker, diastolic dysfunction linked to an impaired relaxation, a mean ejection fraction of 49%, and AV block. Two subgroups were analyzed equally: group I: seven patients with a normal ejection fraction and group II: 13 patients with decreased ejection fraction. Three different AVDs were studied: short (50 ms), intermediate (150 ms), and long (250 ms). Results: As the AVD increased, the diastolic filling time and the peak atrial reverse flow wave decreased (P 〈 0.001). There was a decreasing D wave and no significant change in the peak velocity of the S wave. The S wave became biphasic in all patients at the longest AVD of 250 ms. The systolic (S) velocity time integral (VTI) of the pulmonary wave and the systolic/total PVF-VTI ratio increased significantly (P 〈 0.001). A similar response was seen in both group of patients. Conclusions: These data correlated the AVD with PVFP, supplying critical systolic information completing the diastolic data obtained from mitral Doppler patterns. These systolic measurements were especially useful for patients with heart failure and a DDD pacemaker, in order to obtain the longest diastolic filling time at the lowest atrial pressure.
