Notes: [Auszug] Adiponectin is an adipocyte-derived hormone. Recent genome-wide scans have mapped a susceptibility locus for type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome to chromosome 3q27, where the gene encoding adiponectin is located. Here we show that decreased expression of adiponectin correlates with insulin ...

Notes: Abstract For more than two decades, international debate over a New World Communication and Information Order has called attention to the question of whether or not newspapers around the world are limited by the alleged dominance of the international news flow by the Western media. Looking at how six newspapers from around the world covered the 1983 downing of KAL Flight 007 by the Soviet Union, we find that papers are in fact able to shape their coverage of major international events through their choice of providers, their selection and interpretation of subjects and facts, and their use of headlines to emphasize and frame information. Thus, newspapers can delimit choice to suit their own needs and goals.

Notes: This study was undertaken in order to understand the effect of low molecular weight additives on the visco-elastic properties of polymers and, in particular, Diamond Shamrock Corporation's PVC-40 resin. The viscous response has been reported in Part I of this series (11). This report describes the elastic properties of these mixtures.A new theoretical analysis of elastic response has been formulated. The direct calculation of stored elastic energy from capillary rheometer measurements is now possible. The conclusion drawn from both the viscous and elastic response study is that a change in viscosity is not a necessary nor sufficient condition for improved processability. Increased flow is obtained by lowering the viscous losses, but the melt fracture phenomena may be unchanged. In order to completely characterize the compound, both viscous and elastic response must be measured.

Notes: Plastics in solid wastes is a problem of growing concern. Recycling of wastes is currently believed to be the most acceptable form of disposal in the long run; however, this route is known to be especially difficult for plastics. Recycling would be easier if the various generic types present in solid wastes, mainly polyethylene, polystyrene and poly (vinyl chloride), could be isolated; however, this would be very difficult and expensive. This is a first report on research aimed at evaluating the potential of recycling plastics as a polymer blend of the various generic types. This approach suffers from the difficulty that the different plastics are incompatible and the blend has poor mechanical properties. The extent of this problem is documented with data on many ternary blends employing virgin polyethylene, polystyrene and poly (vinyl chloride) of numerous grades likely to be found in solid wastes. Property degradation was found to be more severe as the complexity of the blend increased, indicating that general municipal wastes could be reused only in very low grade applications, whereas certain commercial wastes might have brighter prospects. Strategies for improving blend properties are outlined.

Notes: The stress concentration and effective flexure stiffness of an ASTM V-notch Izod specimen is excessive for most cases of plastics use. A more typical stiffness is that of a thin plate in two dimensional bending. Such can be approached with a larger radius and deeper V-notch. Instead of a V-notch, however, a double edge notch with the same radius and thickness at the root is recommended. The special advantage of the double edge notch is that the notch at the back edge reduces the energy loss due to the clamp.

Notes: Recycling of waste plastics as a blend of generic types is attractive since a difficult separations problem is avoided. However, blends of incompatible polymers are frequently very brittle and cannot be considered for many applications. Additives which modify the blend to give it ductility may provide a solution to this problem. Chlorinated polyethylene (CPE) made by a slurry process has been suggested for this application by Schramm and Blanchard. Further documentation of the effectiveness of this approach is given here. Addition of CPE to such a blend generally increases the elongation at break and the energy to break very dramatically with ordinarily some loss in strength and modulus. This approach works most effectively in blends of high polyethylene and poly(vinyl chloride) content. Three grades of CPE were studied here which revealed that the specific structure of the CPE molecule is a factor. The effectiveness of CPE for blend modification is believed to derive from the graded molecular structure acquired during chlorination.

Notes: Abstract The determination of numerical values for the elasticity of the myocardium is a prerequisite for any accurate analysis of the left ventricle. Such values as are normally quoted are for a modulus of elasticity for an isotropic homogeneous model. Here some current suggestions for the modulus of elasticity are collated and a further analysis for values on the assumption of an orthotropic left ventricle is presented.

Notes: Measurements of the extent of vinyl chloride migration from specimens of processed poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) are used to calculate the diffusivity of vinyl chloride in PVC pipe compound. The migration is strongly affected by temperature and is slightly larger into water than into air. The equation for calculating vinyl chloride migration from PVC must be generalized to recognize a variable diffusivity to be useful for non-isothermal situations, as in the case of the measurements. The diffusivities calculated from the data with the generalized equation were confirmed by migration measurements from one in. pipe. Predictions with the calculated diffusivities and the generalized equation show that PVC pipe with a 3 mg/kg concentration of residual vinyl chloride will not release quantitatively detectable amounts of vinyl chloride (〈 .002 mg/kg) in a realistic time frame in potable water distribution.
