Notes: The production of dioxins/furans during waste incineration, and particularly the development of measures for minimizing the amount of generated pollutants, continue to command a considerable scientific as well public interest. Experiments are reported which were performed at the TAMARA municipal solid waste pilot incineration, erected on the premises of the karlsruhe Nuclear Research Centre. These experiments show that the solid waste mass flow rate and moisture content influence the dioxin/furan formation, Good removal efficiencies of dioxins/furans have been In wet cleaning. Hydrogen peroxide added to the crude gas is an interesting “killer” reagent for dioxins/furans.

Notes: Behaviour of (heavy) metals on incineration of municipal wastes. Incineration technology is being used to a growing extent for the disposal of municipal wastes. In order to make this technology less harmful to the environment, steps must be taken to counteract the emission of HCl and SO2 and NOx as well as of some metals, above all mercury. For this purpose the pollutant inventory must be known more reliably than was previously the case. Care must also be taken that the problems connected with pollutants are not merely transposed from the air to water or solids. If necessary, the fractions that are soluble in a slightly acid medium must be removed from the fly ash, reacted chemically, and immobilized as compact materials. The actual incineration must be performed in such a way that inert slag is formed so that reusability is assured. The slag may also have to undergo chemical treatment.

Notes: From pollutant source to pollutant sink - Novel concepts of solid incineration. Until a few years ago, solid waste incineration plants were considered to be major sources of pollutant emission. Meanwhile, by enhancing the effectiveness of combustion and by integration of modern flue gas cleaning techniques, solid waste incineration now leads with regard to emission reducing engineering measures. Harmful effects on the environment no longer originate in the stacks of these plants. Recently, pollutants enriched in flue gas cleaning products have caused disposal problems. These problems can be solved by concentrating the harmful inorganic constituents, above all mercury and cadmium, to a still higher level through wet chemical extraction and removal of the resulting concentrate from the process. Organic pollutants can be conveniently destroyed by thermal treatment. Despite all the objections there are good chances of using solid waste incineration as a pollutant sink and hence as a tool helping to protect our environment.

Notes: Advances in Process Research by Radionuclide Techniques. Modifications and transformations of materials and their technical implementation in process systems require movement of materials. Radionuclide techniques can greatly help in understanding and describing these mechanisms. Their advantage lies in the contactless measurement of radioactively labeled flows of materials by the radiation emitted even through thick walls of equipment. Even under rigorous process conditions (high pressures, high temperatures), for instance, residence time distribution functions can be determined at any point in a process system without interfering with the system. This specialized measuring technique is demonstrated by three examples selected from various fields of process technology. Radioactive tracer studies performed on a rotary kiln helped, inter alia, to establish a subdivision into process zones and to pinpoint areas of dust generation. Mixing and feeding actions were studied in a twin screw extruder equipped with a special screw and mixer disk arrangement. Tracer experiments conducted in two secondary settling basins indicate the differences in the mechanisms of movement of the aqueous phase if the mean residence time and the residence time distribution may be influenced not only by hydraulic loads, but also by design variants of the overflow flumes.

Notes: Radiodiagnostics - yes in medical applications, no in process engineering? A critical comparison. There is no doubt that to date medicine has profited most from the application of radiation. There are indeed applications in engineering, including in process engineering, but if one compares the vast field of medical radiodiagnostics, including the important area of computer tomography, to the transmission measurements relying on the same fundamental principles of measurement and employed in engineering, e.g. in the determination of the density of a material, enormous differences can be found as regards both the quantity and the quality of such measurements. This becomes even more apparent if one compares the localization and functional examinations in nuclear medicine to the functional tests performed on process equipment or processes with the help of radiotracers. Whilst today diagnosis with radionuclides is quite commonplace in any major hospital, radiotracer techniques are used but rarely, if at all, in apparatus and process engineering.
