Notizen: In this work the problem of indentation of a half-space by a spherical rigid indentor is investigated using the finite element method.A system of constitutive equations applicable to elasto-plastic materials subjected to large deformations is used to determine the deformations and stresses for the contact problems. These equations represent the simplest generalization for the large-deformation conditions of the classical theory of plasticity of metals based on the von Mises yield condition and the associated flow rule. The material formulation of the kinematical and dynamical relations will be used. These equations combine the kinematic and the isotropic strain-hardening models. The results obtained from this work are compared with existing solutions for this problem that are confined to small strains and elastic, ideal-plastic materials.

Notizen: Plate-bending finite elements are developed for thin and moderately thick plates. The element takes into account the influence of the transverse normal strain and the transverse shear effects. For the computation of the stresses, an additional plate element is developed to determine the inplane displacements and forces. The combined effects of the plate-bending and inplane elements are used for the complete solution of the problem. Several examples are solved and compared with their corresponding exact solutions.

Notizen: Based on the assumed element strain fields and the interrelated displacement-rotation interpolations, a four-node (12 dof) quadrilateral C0 finite element, designated as QCCP-2, for the analysis of thick/thin plates is developed in this paper. The four-node C0 plate element presented here possesses a linear bending strain field, and the element stiffness matrices are given explicitly. Therefore, the present four-node C0 plate element is more efficient and accurate than the existing four-node C0 plate elements where the constant strain stiffness matrices are obtained by numerical integration. By the use of the interrelated displacement-rotation interpolations, QCCP-2 is capable of automatically satisfying the Kirchhoff assumption for the case of thin plates. Consequently, QCCP-2 is not only free of shear locking, but also free from the numerical ill-conditioning. Furthermore, QCCP-2 passes the patch test of thin plates. The four-node quadrilateral C0 elements presented here can automatically reduce to the corresponding three-node triangular elements. Several numerical examples are given to demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the C0 plate bending element QCCP-2.

Notizen: Several simple and accurate C° two-node arch/beam and four-node cylindrical shell/plate finite elements are presented in this paper. The formulation used here is based on the refined theory of thick cylindrical shells and the quasi-conforming element technique. Unlike most C° elements, the element stiffness matrix presented here is given explicitly. In spite of their simplicity, these C° finite elements posseses linear bending strains and are free from the deficiencies existing in curved C° elements such as shear and membrane locking, spurious kinematic modes and numerical ill-conditioning. These finite elements are valid not only for thick/thin beams and plates, but also for arches/straight beams and cylindrical shells/plates. Furthermore, these C° elements can automatically reduce to the corresponding C1 beam and plate elements and give the C° beam element obtained by the reduced integration as a special case. Several numerical examples indicate that the simple two-node arch/beam and four-node cylindrical shell/plate elements given in this paper are superior to the existing C° elements with the same element degrees of freedom. Only the formulation of the rectangular cylindrical shell and plate element is presented in this paper. The formulation of an arbitrarily quadrilateral plate element will be presented in a follow-up paper32.

Notizen: A simple and accurate non-layered plastic element which is capable of capturing the development of plastic curvatures across the thickness of the plates is presented in this paper. The influence of transverse shear forces on the plastic behaviour of plates is also investigated here. This non-layered plastic element is based on: (i) the four-node quadrilateral strain element for shear flexible elastic plates given by the authors; (ii) the plastic hinge formulation outlined by Shi and Atluri; and (iii) the modified Ilyushin's yield function which can account for both the development of plastic deformations across the thickness of plates and the effect of transverse shear forces. The numerical examples given here demonstrate that the present non-layered plastic element can achieve the results obtained by the layered element model and the transverse shear forces considerably affect the plastic behaviour of plates under certain load conditions.

Notizen: An incremental finite element formulation for elasto-plastic bodies subjected to large strains and large displacements is presented in this paper. The formulation is in Lagrangian co-ordinates (material description) and the plasticity model employed is the extended von Mises. The bearing capacity of a strip footing and the stability of an earth slope illustrate the applicability of this theory.

Notizen: An analytical model to simulate the penetration of the piezocone penetrometer in cohesive soils is presented here. The elasto-plastic coupled field equations of the saturated cohesive soils (given by Voyiadjis and Abu-Farsakh) is used in this analysis. The numerical simulation of the piezocone penetration is implemented into a finite element program. The analytical model is used to analyze the miniature piezocone penetration tests (PCPT) conducted at LSU calibration chambers. Simulation of the piezocone penetration is done for two cases. In the first case, the soil-penetrometer interface friction is neglected, while in the second case, the soil-penetrometer interface friction is taken into consideration. The constraint approach is used to model the soil-piezocone interface friction in which the Mohr-Coulomb frictional model is used to define the sliding potential. Analysis is done for three different soil specimens with different stress histories. The results of the numerical simulations are compared with the experimental measurements of the miniature piezocone penetration tests (PCPT) in cohesive soil specimens conducted in LSU calibration chambers. The resulting excess pore pressure distribution and its dissipation using the numerical model are compared with some available prediction methods. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notizen: A computational method, based on an advanced elasto-plastic large strain formulation, well suited for the analysis of the cone penetration problem, is presented.A new approach of finite strain elasto-plastic analysis is employed.13 The basic (non-rate) constitutive relations are developed in a spatial reference space to preserve their physical significance. They are subsequently transformed in Lagrangian co-ordinates, and through simple time differentiation, their rate equations are introduced. The method is computationally implemented with the finite element method and special provisions are taken to allow for the moving boundary conditions of the problem.
