Notes: Summary Cyphellophora laciniata, isolated from human skin at Basel, Switzerland, is described and figured as the first species of a new genus in the Dematiaceae, order Moniliales of the Fungi Imperfecti. Dactylium fusarioides Fragoso etCiferri, isolated from air at Johannesburg, South Africa, has been studied in pure monospore cultures. A detailed description of its morphological and cultural characters is given.

Notes: Abstract A vesicular skin lesion which existed since 1 week in the lower part of the leg of a 45-year-old woman appeared to be caused by a fungus which was identified as Trichophyton quinckeanum (Zopf) MacLeod & Muende. The patient could not state to have had contact with animals. Peroral administration of griseofulvin and local application of 2% salicyl — 5% sulfur — vaseline alternated with tonoftal cream healed the lesion completely. The fast growing fungus produced white, convoluted colonies with a brown, later wine-red reverse. Globose and club-shaped, one- and two-celled microconidia were formed especially ‘en thyrse’. The majority of the thin-walled macroconidia had rounded apices but a fusiform type of spore was also seen. Germination of the macroconidia was frequently observed. Experimental infection into the dorsal skin of a white laboratory mouse produced a scutulum with a bright yellow later green fluorescence in Wood's light. The taxonomy of Trichophyton quinckeanum is briefly discussed.

Notes: Summary A report is given of a case of black grain maduromycosis in a 38 year old man living on Curaçao, Netherlands Antilles. The silver-impregnation method for staining reticulin is successfully used for staining of the fungi in tissue sections. The causative fungus isMadurella mycetomi (Laveran)Brumpt. The isolated strain differs from the usual isolations of this species by its very faint pigment production into the medium. The cultural and microscopical characters of this strain are described.

Notes: Summary 1) Sporotrichum cerebriforme nov. spec. has been isolated from a seborrhoic-pityriasis-like, light-green fluorescent lesion on the scalp of a 16-year old girl. 2) The possible role of this fungus in the pathogenic process could not be established. 3) The fungus was not pathogenic for rats and guinea pigs.

Notes: Abstract A study was made of a number of morphological, physiological and biochemical characteristics of 119Aspergillus fumigatus strains and 1A. fischeri strain, to determine whether there is any reason to presume thatA. fumigatus strains from patients can be distinguished from saprophytic strains. Strains from cases of aspergillosis sensu lato (referred to as p-strains) were compared with strains of saprophytic origin (w-strains). The variability of colony aspect, size and shape of the conidia, length of the conidiophores, sensitivity to antimycotics and fluorescence in Wood's light was much greater in the p-group than in the w-group. No characteristic was found to correlate with one group only. All the strains were strongly inhibited by amphotericin B, followed by pimaricin and nystatin. Griseofulvin did not inhibit any strain, trichomycin a few only. Growth and sporulation of all the strains appeared to be independent of aneurine, nicotinic acid, pantothenic acid, pyridoxin and riboflavin. In some strains the Czapek medium showed a pale green, blue or red fluorescence when observed in Wood's light. Fluorescence was more frequent and sometimes stronger in the p-group than in the w-group. Glucose, fructose, saccharose and maltose were excellent carbon sources. Dextrin, galactose and glycerol were less favourable for most strains, in this order. Lactose and potassium pyruvate were either not utilized at all, or only poorly. Potassium pyruvate, however, was a good carbon source forA. fischeri, strain 74. Peptone, potassium nitrate, ammonium nitrate, glycine, urea and alanine were good nitrogen sources. The utilization of glutamine and tyrosine was usually good. Sporulation was delayed on all the nitrogen media examined, except the peptone and cystine media. Some strains were capable of anaerobic growth without sporulation.

Notes: Abstract The human-pathogenic fungus, Phialophora cyanescens sp. nov. is characterized by the abundant production of chlamydospore-like cell aggregates resembling the form-genus Phaeosclera Sigler et al., and by elongate phialides with ellipsoidal conidia. A brown pigment and a blue, acid-labile pigment may be present.
