Notes: Abstract Procedures are developed and summarized that allow the calculation of the energy required to manufacture and install capital equipment, such as the material needed for a coalfired power plant. Three methods are available, each with certain strengths and weaknessess The first uses both literature value and national manufacturing statistics, the second uses a previously developed technique that disaggregates energy use according to how much each industry buys from all other industries, and the third technique is based on the average national relation between energy use and dollar flow. The most important differences between estimates of energy use by the different techniques relates to the inclusion or exclusion of labor and indirect expenditures rather than to differences in the data bases of the three techniques.

Notes: Abstract PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to devise a symptom scoring system to assist in diagnosing constipation and in discriminating among pathophysiologic subgroups. METHOD: A structured symptom scoring questionnaire (11 questions) was completed by 71 chronically constipated patients and by 20 asymptomatic controls. The symptom score was correlated with a previously validated constipation score (Cleveland Clinic Score). All patients underwent colonic transit studies, standard anorectal physiology testing, and evacuation proctography. On the basis of these investigations alone, an observer blinded to the questionnaire results allocated patients to one of three pathophysiologic subgroups: slow-transit constipation, rectal evacuatory disorder, or mixed (slow-transit constipation and rectal evacuatory disorder). Linear discriminant analysis was used to assess the ability of different questionnaire symptoms to discriminate among these subgroups. RESULTS: Total symptom score was strongly correlated with the Cleveland Clinic Score (r=0.9). The median total score in constipated patients was 20 (range, 11–35) compared with a median of 2 in controls (range, 0–6). Discriminant analysis using cross validation estimated that pathophysiology could be predicted correctly for 55 percent (95 percent confidence interval =43–67 percent) of patients using just five symptoms. The discriminant function rarely misclassified patients with rectal evacuatory disorder as slow-transit constipation andvice versa, but could not effectively discriminate between patients with single and mixed pathologies. CONCLUSION: This new scoring system is a valid technique to assist in the diagnosis of constipation and is the first study using appropriate statistical methodology to demonstrate a discriminatory ability of multiple symptoms in constipation. At present, symptom analysis does not adequately differentiate major pathophysiologic subgroups for use in clinical practice.

Notes: Summary During an inflammatory response, leukocytes adhere to the blood-vessel wall and to underlying extracellular matrix-protein fibronectin via noncovalent interaction through two distinct cell-surface integrins, α5β1 and α4β1. An Arg-Gly-Asp tripeptide in the cell-binding domain of fibronectin has been demonstrated to be the major site that mediates cell attachment. Our group has previously disclosed Arg-Gly-Asp- and Arg-Cys-Asp-containing cyclic peptide cell-adhesion inhibitors, which are potentially useful as anti-inflammatory agents, particularly in the treatment of asthma and rheumatoid arthritis. Subsequently, we have incorporated a β-turn dipeptide mimic and a suitably protected Arg-Gly thiomethylene dipeptide surrogate into our lead peptides by solid-phase synthesis. The preparation of the surrogates, and the structure-activity studies of the surrogate-containing peptides are described in this paper. Complete loss of cell-adhesion inhibition activity was observed in the case of incorporation of the conformationally constrained β-turn dipeptide into a cyclic Arg-Cys-Asp peptide inhibitor. Incorporation of an Arg-Gly thiomethylene dipeptide surrogate into cyclic Arg-Gly-Asp and Arg-Cys-Asp cyclic disulfide peptide inhibitors was tolerated, resulting in cyclic pseudopeptide cell-adhesion inhibitors lacking the Arg-Gly peptide amide bond.

Notes: Abstract This study examined the relationship of parental education, race, and gender to sex-role stereotyping in five-year-old kindergartners. A significant effect for race and parental education level was noted. White children gave more stereotyped responses than did black children, and children whose parents were in the middle- and high-educational levels gave more stereotyped responses than did children whose parents were in the low-educational level. A significant interaction was also found between educational level of parents and race. White children tended to give more stereotyped responses as the educational level of their parents increased; this trend was not evident for black children. No significant differences in stereotyping were noted between the sexes.

Notes: Isolated rat hearts were subjected to 15, 45, or 60 minutes of global ischaemia and then fixed by perfusion at 37°C with glutaraldehyde containing various amounts of oxygen. This either had been bubbled with 100% oxygen (PO2 620 mm Hg) or with 100% nitrogen (PO2 40 mm Hg) immediately before use, or it had been routinely prepared and stored exposed to atmospheric oxygen (PO2 245 mm Hg). The ultrastructure of myocytes and endothelial cells subjected to 15 minutes of ischaemia was not affected by the treatment of the fixative. However, when the tissue subjected to longer periods of ischaemia was fixed with routinely prepared or oxygen-bubbled glutaraldehyde, ultrastructural changes characteristic of reoxygenation damage were uniformly evident in both the microvasculature and myocytes. These qualitatively distinct changes included mitochondrial swelling, cell swelling, endothelial bleb formation, and narrowing of capillary lumina. These abnormalities were not observed in tissue fixed with nitrogen-bubbled glutaraldehyde. These findings indicate that deliberate steps should be taken to reduce or eliminate dissolved oxygen from the fixatives used to study ischaemic tissues. Otherwise artefactual reoxygenation damage in vitro may occur and make valid ultrastructural interpretation difficult or impossible.
