    Notes: The integrated photoluminescence (PL) intensities of both ordered and disordered epilayers of InGaP grown on GaAs have been measured as a function of temperature. The highest PL efficiency occurs in the most disordered sample. We find that the PL intensities can drop from 2 to almost 4 orders of magnitude between 12 and 280 K. The samples show an Arrhenius behavior characterized by two activation energies. Below 100 K the activation energies lie in the region of 10–20 meV. Above 100 K the activation energy is approximately 50 meV except in the most disordered sample where it increases to 260 meV. We conclude that the low-temperature PL efficiency is most likely controlled by carrier thermalization from spatial fluctuations of the band edges followed by nonradiative recombination. At higher temperatures the PL efficiency is dominated by a nonradiative path whose characteristic activation energy and transition probability depend upon the degree of sublattice ordering.

    Notes: Routine metabolism of the euryhaline cyprinodontid Cyprinodon variegatus Lacepede was measured at a series of ambient salinities ranging from fresh water through 100‰. Fish used had been sequentially acclimated to the test salinities (ambient temperature of 20±1° C and a 12: 12 L: D schedule).Routine metabolic rates were highest at ambient salinities from 15 to 50‰. Metabolism was somewhat lower at ambient salinities less than 15‰, and showed a sequential decline at ambient salinities greater than 50‰. It is suggested that routine metabolism is depressed at elevated salinities by reduced O, transfer, a consequence of maintenance of hydromineral balance in hypersaline waters.

    Notes: Abstract— Evolutionary theory predicts that some aquatic organisms may adapt by directional selection to limiting physical environmental conditions, yet empirical data are conflicting. We sought to test the assumption that sculpins (family Cottidae) inhabiting thermally stable springs of the southeastern United States differ in temperature tolerance and metabolism from populations inhabiting more thermally labile stream habitats. Spring populations of pygmy sculpins (Cottus pygmaeus) and Ozark sculpins (C. hypselurus) differed interspecifically in thermal tolerance from populations of stream-dwelling mottled (C. bairdi) and Tallapoosa sculpins (C. tallapoosae), and both stream and spring populations of banded sculpins (C. carolinae). No intra- or interspecific differences in thermal tolerance were found among populations of C. bairdi, C. talla poosae, or C. carolinae. Cottus pygmaeus acclimated to 15°C differed intraspecifically in routine metabolism from fish acclimated to 20° and 25°C. Cottus pygmaeus and stream-dwelling C. bairdi and C. carolinae acclimated to temperatures of 20° and 25°C showed no interspecific differences in routine metabolism. Our results suggest that some spring-adapted populations or species may be more stenothermal than stream-dwelling congeners, but a greater understanding of the interactions of other physical and biological factors is required to better explain micro- and macro habitat distributions of eastern North American sculpins.

    Notes: The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of changes in stride length on the symptoms of exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD) during a repeated bout of downhill running in a group of 18 men and women. Muscle tenderness, plasma creatine kinase activity (CK) and maximal voluntary isometric force were measured before and after two downhill runs, with each run separated by 5 weeks. The first downhill run was at the preferred stride frequency (PSF). Participants were then randomly allocated to one of three sex-balanced groups with equal numbers of men and women: overstride (−8% PSF), understride (+8% PSF) and normal stride frequency for the second downhill run. Stride length had no effect (P〉0.05) on muscle tenderness, CK or isometric peak force. Increases in muscle tenderness (P〈0.001) and CK were lower (P〈0.05) following the second downhill run, although there was no difference in the pattern and extent of the strength decrement between the two runs. There were also no differences (P〉0.05) in muscle tenderness, CK or the relative strength loss between the men and the women. Results suggest that the symptoms of EIMD are unaffected by gender and small alterations to the normal stride pattern during constant velocity downhill running. The observation that muscle tenderness and CK were reduced following a repeated bout of similar eccentric exercise is consistent with the phenomenon known as the ‘repeated bout effect’ of muscle damage.

    Notes: The effects of intragastric tagging on transmitter retention, food consumption and survival were investigated in Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua L.) under laboratory conditions. Cod (60–84 cm) were intragastrically tagged with two different sizes of dummy acoustic transmitters (16 × 45 and 16 × 82 mm) using the methods of forced insertion and voluntary ingestion. Cod that were tagged by forced insertion began to regurgitate transmitters the first day after tagging and continued to do so throughout the period of study. The percentage of fish retaining transmitters in this group dropped to 50% after 32 days. By comparison, cod that were tagged by voluntary ingestion exhibited a 44-day delay in the onset of initial regurgitation. This was followed by a rapid rate of regurgitation, with the percentage of fish retaining transmitters in this group dropping to 50% after 60 days. These retention times are prolonged in comparison to previous studies and have been attributed to the lower temperature regime used in this study. Transmitter size did not significantly affect the duration of retention. During the first 20 days following tagging, the average food consumption per fish was higher in the voluntary ingestion group compared with the forced insertion and sham groups. Mortality levels were 13, 44 and 56% for the voluntary ingestion, forced insertion and sham groups, respectively, over the period of study. We associate low food consumption and high mortality rates in the first 20 days of the experiment with high levels of stress due to handling. The findings indicate that voluntary ingestion is a more viable technique for the intragastric tagging of cod in field studies.

    Notes: The effect diel variation in availability and vulnerability has on the fish capture process of a groundfish survey trawl was examined from data collected during an experiment measuring fish escapement underneath the footgear. The survey trawl was significantly more efficient at night in capturing American plaice, Hippoglossoides platessoides, and yellowtail flounder, Limanda ferruginea, but no difference was found in catches of Atlantic cod, Gadus morhua. This increase in capture efficiency at night is related to an increase in availability and vulnerability associated with diel variation in light intensity. No evidence of diel vertical migration was found and changes in availability were linked to visual dependent gear avoidance by the fish.Regardless of light conditions, the survey trawl had a very low capture efficiency for juveniles of the three species studied. Escapement of this size group was extremely high during both day and night periods due to a fast towing speed, use of large bobbin gear, and possible mesh selection.
