    Notes: Abstract  A new methodology based on mixed linear models was developed for mapping QTLs with digenic epistasis and QTL×environment (QE) interactions. Reliable estimates of QTL main effects (additive and epistasis effects) can be obtained by the maximum-likelihood estimation method, while QE interaction effects (additive×environment interaction and epistasis×environment interaction) can be predicted by the-best-linear-unbiased-prediction (BLUP) method. Likelihood ratio and t statistics were combined for testing hypotheses about QTL effects and QE interactions. Monte Carlo simulations were conducted for evaluating the unbiasedness, accuracy, and power for parameter estimation in QTL mapping. The results indicated that the mixed-model approaches could provide unbiased estimates for both positions and effects of QTLs, as well as unbiased predicted values for QE interactions. Additionally, the mixed-model approaches also showed high accuracy and power in mapping QTLs with epistatic effects and QE interactions. Based on the models and the methodology, a computer software program (QTLMapper version 1.0) was developed, which is suitable for interval mapping of QTLs with additive, additive×additive epistasis, and their environment interactions.

    Notes: Abstract Behavioral experiments show that toads exhibit stimulus- and locus-specific habituation. Different worm-like stimuli that toads can discriminate at a certain visual location form a dishabituation hierarchy. What is the neural mechanism which underlies these behaviors? This paper proposes that the toad discriminates visual objects based on temporal responses, and that discrimination is reflected in different average neuronal firing rates at some higher visual center, hypothetically anterior thalamus. This theory is developed through a large-scale neural simulation which includes retina, tectum and anterior thalamus. The neural model based on this theory predicts that retinal R2 cells play a primary role in the discrimination via tectal small pear cells (SP) and R3 cells refine the feature analysis by inhibition. The simulation demonstrates that the retinal response to the trailing edge of a stimulus is as crucial for pattern discrimination as the response to the leading edge. The new dishabituation hierarchies predicted by this model by reversing contrast and shrinking stimulus size need to be tested experimentally.

    Notes: Abstract An adsorption strength model is developed to describe the mechanism of codeposition of α-alumina and Fe–P alloy. Based on hypotheses concerning the effective adsorption and the distribution of the adsorption strength of particles on the cathode, a general expression relating the content of embedded particles to the suspension concentration and the current density is deduced. This relationship is in good agreement with the experimental results. The variation of the content of particles in deposits with current density is an overall balance of two opposing effects which leads to a maximum in the particle content against current density curve.
