    Notes: Four fifth-grade classrooms embarked on a modified ubiquitous computing initiative in the fall of 2003. Two 15-computer wireless laptop carts were shared among the four classrooms in an effort to integrate technology across the curriculum and affect change in student learning and teacher pedagogy. This initiative—in contrast to other one-to-one programmemess and stationary labs—offers public schools alternatives to budget constraints and instructional-space overhead. Results indicate positive teacher technology competence and confidence, as well as instructional strategies that were student-centred made meaningful uses of technology. Teacher technological knowledge and efficacy, pedagogical knowledge, and a supportive school community seem to be strong indicators for impacting technology integration in this context.

    Notes: Abstract  SHP2, a widely distributed protein-tyrosine phosphatase with src homology-2 (SH2) domains, is highly expressed in the brain and may play a role in synaptic communications or cellular proliferation. In this study, we examined SHP2 protein expression in 110 renal cell tumours of various histological subtypes, including clear, granular, papillary, chromophobe, collecting duct, and sarcomatoid-type renal cell carcinoma (RCC), and oncocytoma. SHP2 was expressed predominantly in normal distal tubules and collecting ducts, and positivity in various types of renal tumours was as follows: clear cell RCC, 0% (0/77 cases); granular, 7.7% (1/13); papillary, 50% (3/6); sarcomatoid, 0% (0/1); chromophobe, 85.7% (6/7); collecting duct carcinoma, 0% (0/2); oncocytoma, 100% (4/4). Clear and granular-type RCCs showed a very low but positive expression of SHP2. Chromophobe RCC and oncocytoma showed the highest rates and strongest intensities of SHP2 protein on immunostaining. SHP2 may serve as a powerful marker in detecting rare tumours. Estimates of its expression may be useful in histological diagnosis.

    Notes: Abstract Retinoic acid (RA) and its parent compound, retinol (ROH, vitamin A), have been recognized as important immunopotentiating agents. Previous studies from our laboratory have demonstrated that RA can augment formalin-treatedStaphylococcus aureus (SAC)-stimulated immunoglobulin (Ig) synthesis of cord blood mononuclear cells (CBMC). To determine the mechanism(s) by which RA modulates Ig synthesis, we studied the effects of RA on B cells and cytokine production. The addition of RA (10−5 to 10−10 M) to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-transformed B-cell clones derived from either adult or cord blood B cells augmented Ig secretion twofold. In contrast, cell proliferation was inhibited as measured by3H-thymidine incorporation. We evaluated two cytokines known to be constitutively produced by EBV cell lines, IL-1 and IL-6. While RA had no effect on IL-1 production, IL-6 synthesis was greatly enhanced (20- to 45-fold), which was also reflected by an increase in steady-state mRNA levels for IL-6 but not TNF-α or TGF-β on Northern blot analysis. Polyclonal rabbit anti-IL-6 antibodies were used to block the augmenting effects of RA on Ig synthesis of adenoidal B cells. RA-induced augmentation in IgG and IgA synthesis was blocked 58 and 29%, respectively, by anti-IL-6 antibodies. These studies suggest that the enhancing effects of RA on Ig synthesis are mediated, at least in part, by the autocrine or paracrine effects of IL-6 on B-cell differentiation.

    Notes: A new algorithm for the double surface integral with a 1/R singularity over flat or curved quadrilateral elements is presented. This algorithm is of special interest in the numerical implementation of the variational boundary element methods for acoustic radiation of finite-volume bodies. The presented algorithm takes the factor of singularity in an integrand as the weight function, and approximates the integral by the area of the surface element times a weighted average of the remaining integrand at a number of the integral points in the element domain. A numerical example demonstrates the accuracy of the proposed algorithm. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
