    Notes: An incubation period is often observed prior to the onset of creep crack growth. This paper presents a procedure for estimating its duration from a knowledge only of the stress rupture properties and creep ductility of a material. Comparisons are made with experimental data on type 316L stainless steel at 600°C and a 1% CrMoV low alloy steel at 550°C. It is shown that good agreement is achieved when allowance for a build up of damage in a process zone at the crack tip during the early stages of cracking is incorporated into the analysis.

    Notes: In this investigation, finite element calculations have been performed to obtain the creep stress distributions generated in circumferentially notched bar test-pieces. They have also been made to determine the relation between axial extension and notch throat diameter changes. It has been found that an approximate skeletal point can be identified where the stress state is insensitive to the power law stress dependence of creep. Consistent trends in skeletal point stress ratios to those given in an existing Code of Practice for notch bar creep testing have been obtained. Nevertheless updated values, particularly for sharp notches, are proposed and these have now been inserted into a new version of the Code of Practice. In contrast, the link between extension and notch throat diameter changes has been found to depend on the creep stress index as well as the notch geometry. It is anticipated that the analysis can be used to establish the multi-axial creep stress deformation and rupture behaviour of materials.

    Notes: Abstract— Strain-controlled total endurance tests have been carried out on smooth specimens of 2¼Cr-1Mo steel at 550°C in continuous cycling, and also using interspersed blocks of “major” and “minor” cycling. Similar low-cycle fatigue crack growth tests were also carried out on cylindrical specimens of ½CrMoV steel containing a 0.2 mm deep starter defect using interspersed blocks of “major”, “intermediate” and “minor” cycling, their order being changed in separate tests.Damage summation in the smooth specimen tests at failure was found to be less than unity (irrespective of the failure criterion) when Miner's rule was employed, and the results are compared with limited previous data. Damage was also summed on an energy-expended basis and this was found to be (i) independent of strain range, and (ii) independent of cycle type (i.e. continuous loading or block loading). The nearer the chosen failure criterion to crack initiation, the closer was the agreement in accumulated energies.Similarly, in the crack growth tests, the number of complete loops to “failure” (10% load drop) was independent of block order over a wide range of applied strain ranges, but was affected by the number of cycles in each block. However, the energy criterion was again able to rationalise all the data.

    Notes: Abstract Crack growth experiments have been carried out under combined creep and fatigue loading at 700° C on a hot isostatically pressed powder nickel alloy. A fractographic investigation has been undertaken of the modes of failure over a frequency range of 0.001 to 10 Hz. The observations indicate that under static loading and at low frequencies failure is intergranular and controlled by creep processes, whereas at high frequencies a transgranular fatigue fracture is obtained. The transition from creep to fatigue behaviour is found to be progressive, and to begin at a lower frequency the higher the ratio of cyclic to mean load. In the transition region a mixed intergranular and transgranular fracture surface is observed, which correlates well with the recorded proportion of creep to fatigue crack growth.
