Notes: A polyimide-coated substrate is rubbed periodically with the stylus of an atomic-force microscope. The effective polar and azimuthal anchoring strength coefficients for planar anchoring are determined as a function of the spatial separation L of rub lines. Both anchoring coefficients are found to decrease monotonically with L, apparently leveling off at nonzero values for L(approximately-greater-than)2 μm. The observed behavior is discussed in terms of a combination of intrinsic anchoring strength in the rubbed regions and a surface memory effect. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Beam characteristics such as beamwidth and beam intensity of short-pulse radiation with electromagnetic missile effect, not restricted to the electromagnetic missile, are generally range dependent in pulse propagation. An effective measure to study such beam characteristics is to investigate the local drop rate of the energy pattern in the beam profile and the local decay rate of energy in the pulse beam. It is shown that both the energy decay rate and the energy drop rate are definitely determined by the time–space source parameters so that the beam characteristics can be readily evaluated and properly controlled. Moreover, the underlying relation between the slow decay rate and the energy drop rate are constructed, which shows perfect harmony in achieving slower-energy decay and higher-energy concentration in the beam. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A polyimide that is designed to produce homeotropic liquid-crystal orientation is baked at high temperature and rubbed with a cotton cloth. It is found that the resulting pretilt angle of the liquid-crystal pentylcyanobiphenyl is continuously controllable from 0° to nearly 40°. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: An atomic force microscope was used to write planar alignment patterns on a polyimide-coated glass substrate. Paired with a substrate treated for homeotropic alignment, the resulting hybrid liquid crystal cell produced fixed gray scale images with pixel sizes of order 1 μm. The physics and efficacy of this architecture are compared to a cell having planar alignment at both substrates. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A method is proposed to prepare Al2O3-AlN-Ni composites. The composites are prepared by sintering Al2O3/NiAl powder mixtures at 1600°C in a mixture of nitrogen and carbon monoxide. The presence of NiAl particles raises the green density of Al2O3/NiAl powder compacts. During sintering, NiAl reacts with nitrogen to form AlN and Ni inclusions. A volume expansion accompanies the reaction. Because of the high green density and the reaction, the volume shrinkage of the Al2O3-AlN-Ni composite decreases with the increase of added NiAl content.

Notes: Abstract Several substituted 6-anilino-5H-benzo[a]phenothiazin-5-one derivatives were prepared by condensation of substituted 1,4-naphthoquinones with 2-aminobenzenethiol in pyridine. The reduction and acetylation of the resulting compounds were also investigated.

Notes: In numerical simulation of engineering problems, it is important to properly simulate theinterface between two adjacent parts of the model. In finite element method, there are generally threemethods for simulating interface problems: interface element method, surface based contact methodand the method by using a thin layer of continuum elements. In this paper, simulation of interfaceproblems is conducted using continuum elements and surface based contact methods. The resultsfrom each method are presented and compared with each other

Notes: The current method of soil nail construction in Hong Kong is both labour intensive as wellas expensive and a search for new soil nail material is required. In the present pilot test, light weighthigh strength and high corrosion resistance GFRP pipe with Tube a’ Manchette grouting technique isused as soil nail instead of the conventional steel reinforcement. It is found that this material can behandled easily on site with difficult access. From extensive laboratory as well as field tests, it isdemonstrated that this new soil nail technique has various advantages for use in Hong Kong and manydeveloped cities. The field test results on this innovative soil nail will be discussed in this paper
