Notes: Umbilical vein cortisol levels were assayed following spontaneous labour in 30 patients. Serum bilirubin was measured in the infants born at three days after delivery. No correlation was demonstrated between third day bilirubin concentration and the cord blood cortisol. The implications of this finding are discussed.

Notes: Umbilical vein (W) plasma cortisol levels were assayed at delivery after spontaneous labour, oxytocin-induced labour, prostaglandin E,-induced labour and after delivery by elective Caesarean section. Higher mean UV cortisol levels were observed after vaginal delivery than after delivery by elective Caesarean section. The highest mean UV cortisol level was observed in the PGEa group which accords with the known ability of prostaglandins to increase steroid production. The significance of these findings is discussed.

Notes: Abstract— Increasing the HCO3− concentration of incubation media containing raised K+ concentrations (18-71 mm) caused increased swelling of monkey cerebral cortex slices. This swelling was mainly associated with increased intracellular levels of Na+ and Cl− ions. It was independent of the type of buffer used and was not a result of the increased Na+ concentration in the media due to added HCO3− or the increased osmolarity. The levels also were unaffected by alteration of the pH in the range of 6·9- 7·8 or pCO2 in the range of 3–81 mm Hg.The anatomical locus of this HCO3− stimulated swelling appeared in electron micrographs to be an expanded glial compartment. The significance of these findings is discussed in terms of the transport processes involved and the role of glial cells in maintaining correct cerebro-cortical ion balances under normal and pathological conditions.

Notes: Macroscopically normal tongues were examined from 161 necropsies. Two types of lingual epithelium were investigated by morphometry and the results were statistically analysed in relation to known levels of alcohol and tobacco usage in each case. Alcohol and tobacco were each associated with a reduction in epithelial thickness brought about by a reduction in the maturation layer due mainly to cell shrinkage By contrast, the progenitor layer increased in size, due to hypertrophy rather than hyperplasia Changes occurred in each type of epithelium and were more severe with alcohol. There was no significant interaction between alcohol and tobacco. The structural changes appeared to be non-specific reactions to local toxic effects of alcohol and tobacco. They could, if accompanied by equivalent functional decrements, indicate an increased vulnerability to carcinogens, whether or not these derive from alcoholic drinks or tobacco smoke.

Notes: The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the presence and anatomical positions of connective tissue progenitor cell populations in the gingival papilla of the rat. Ten male hooded Lister rats aged 4 wk were killed 1 h after flash labelling with tritiated thymidine. Paraffin sections were cut through the molar regions of 19 mandibles parallel to the occlusal plane. Sections immediately apical to the epithelium of the col and just coronal to the crest of the interdental septum (levels 1 and 5) were chosen for autoradiography, as were a further three sections (levels 2, 3 and 4), spaced equidistantly between levels 1 and 5 in a subsample of 10 of these mandibles. Mean labelling indices (LIs) for all 19 specimens were significantly higher within 5 μm of the teeth at levels 1 and 5, and in a zone 15–25 μm from the teeth in level 5. LIs for the subsample of 10 mandibles were also significantly higher within 5 μm of the teeth in levels 3 and 5, and within 15–20 μm in levels 4 and 5. Nuclear densities were highest at all levels within 10 μm of the teeth and at 20 μm (levels 1–3) or 30 Jan (levels 4 and 5) from the teeth. The data are consistent with the existence of ostensible connective tissue progenitor cell populations, one in contact with cementum and junctional epithelium, the other lying in the body of the papilla at its most apical levels, 15–25 μm from the teeth.
