    Notes: Abstract For nonconvex problems, the saddle point equivalence of the Lagrangian approach need not hold. The nonexistence of a saddle point causes the generation of a dual gap at the solution point, and the Lagrangian approach then fails to give the solution to the original problem. Unfortunately, dual gaps are a fairly common phenomenon for engineering system design problems. Methods which are available to resolve the dual gaps destroy the separability of separable systems. The present work employs the method of multipliers by Hestenes to resolve the dual gaps of engineering system design problems; it then develops an algorithmic procedure which preserves the separability characteristics of the system. The theoretical foundations of the proposed algorithm are developed, and examples are provided to clarify the approach taken.

    Notes: In this paper the problem of distillation sequence synthesis with heat integration is formulated and solved as a mixed integer linear superstructure optimization problem. Allowing both conventional and multieffect distillation, two alternatives for generating a superstructure are shown, then a formulation is presented which approximates the synthesis problem as a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) problem. Examples illustrate the method. Reported computer times suggest that earlier algorithmic methods for discovering the better sequences among those allowed by the problem formulation, and without the option of multieffecting, are an order of magnitude slower than this approach.

    Notes: In earlier work the authors presented a simple method to synthesize heat-integrated distillation sequences through the use of simple sketches on a diagram displaying temperature vs. enthalpy. Embedded in that work is the useful but in-correct assumption that the reboiler/condenser heat loads and the temperature-difference across the column are independent of the temperature (pressure) level at which the column is operated. This assumption of constancy is removed here, and it is shown how to calculate the minimum utility target using a small linear programming formulation. It is also shown how to use the results of this calculation to synthesize distillation sequences that approach the bound discovered. For the example problems solved, the minimum utility target calculated increases about 25 to 60% over that calculated assuming constant QΔT. The sequences synthesized based on this improved target are virtually the same as the constant QΔT method produces, suggesting that the earlier method is indeed a useful approach.

    Notes: Process synthesis is the step in design where the chemical engineer selects the component parts and how to interconnect them to create his flowsheet. This paper reviews the rapidly growing process synthesis literature of over 190 articles, almost all of which have been produced in the last decade.The paper first introduces the nature of the synthesis problem and outlines the variety of approaches which have appeared to solve aspects of it. The problems include developing a representation, a means to evaluate alternatives, and a strategy to search the almost infinitely large space of possible alternatives. As the article demonstrates, effective solutions are very dependent on the nature of the synthesis problem being addressed.The article covers in detail the following five synthesis topics: chemical reaction paths, separation systems, heat exchanger networks, complete flowsheets, and control systems. Readily apparent are the development of industrially significant insights to aid in the design of heat exchanger networks. Reasonable progress exists in the synthesis of separation systems based on nearly ideal distillation technology and in the development of computer aids by chemists for reaction path synthesis leading to desired complex organic molecules. More work is needed for the remaining areas to become industrially significant.

    Notes: In this paper a new method is presented which will enable engineers to select better heat-integrated distillation systems quickly and easily. The key to this method is making the assumption that QΔT, the product of the condenser or reboiler duty and the temperature difference between the reboiler and condenser, is constant for a single distillation task over a wide range of pressures. Using this assumption and the principles of multieffect distillation, a lower bound on the utility use for single distillation tasks and for distillation sequences is readily calculated for designs involving simple two-product columns that may not be multieffected. This paper also describes methods which can be used to synthesize distillation systems which approach these bounds. Finally, an algorithm is presented which develops the least cost distillation system for separating a multicomponent feed. The methods in this paper are illustrated with a five-component example problem.
