Notes: Summary Egg implant studies on sheep demonstrate that the relative fitness of resistance genotypes of the sheep blowfly,Lucilia cuprina, changes over time for the 2 insecticides dieldrin and diazinon. The results suggest that selection may occur following exposure of larvae to sub-lethal concentrations and help to explain the relative rates of the development of resistance to dieldrin and diazinon byL. cuprina.

Notes: Abstract The paper describes a method for determining dosage-mortality curves to organophosphorus insecticides for first-instar larvae of the Australian Sheep Blowfly. Emphasis is given to simulating conditions of exposure likely to be encountered by the larvae in the field. The method is applied to a variety of OP-resistant strains and demonstrates that the level of resistance conferred on larvae bears no relationship to the level of resistance conferred on adults even where resistance is determined by different alleles at the same locus.

Notes: [Auszug] How might this sort of system be used for insect con-trol ? There are clearly a number of possibilities of which we shall mention two. The most obvious is to take advantage of the development in one region of a strain of pest resistant to a particular insecticide, or to develop such a strain in the ...

Notes: Abstract Variation in chromosome number from 2n=9 to 2n=7 was found in a species of leafhopper, Alodeltocephalus draba. It is argued that this variation is due to chromosome fusion and that A. draba is presently evolving to a lower number. The process of reduction is more advanced in some populations than in others.

Notes: Abstract An unidentified species of the genus Austroagalloides is shown to have 7II+1IV instead of the normal 11II+XO configuration at metaphase I of meiosis in males. The quadrivalent manifests two types of pairing which ensures regular disjunction; normal chiasma-type pairing and distance pairing. It is suggested that the 7II+1IV form is derived from the 11II+XO form by a series of fusions.

Notes: Abstract Standard photographic maps of the trichogen cell polytene chromosomes are presented. Polytene chromosome locations of 39 mutations have been determined by genetic mapping of autosomal duplications, inversions and translocations. Homologies between the polytene chromosomes of L. cuprina, other Calliphoridae, and Sarcophagidae are noted; genetic linkage groups may have been conserved largely intact during the evolution of the higher Diptera.

Notes: Summary Viable and fertile Y-linked duplications have been recovered in Lucilia cuprina for autosomal segments ranging in size from 2–12% of the autosomal polytene chromosome complement. No viable deficiency in this size range was recovered. Survival to adulthood of the duplications decreased with increasing duplication size. Genetic background also influenced recovery of some duplications. Recovery of duplications from fertile duplication-male parents was frequently much higher than from translocation-male parents, possibly due to low adjacent-1 segregation in some translocations or to meiotic-drive-type events. Chromosome 4R may contain a triplo-lethal locus. The use of sex-linked duplications in female-killing systems for genetic control programs may have considerable advantages over reciprocal sex-linked translocations, both in terms of fertility and strain stability.
