Description / Table of Contents: Summary The results of a theoretical analysis on pressure drop in a pipe with constant wall temperature, taking into account effects of dissipation, and of temperaturedependent non-Newtonian viscosity, are presented. A simple critical equation answers whether these effects are negligible, and enables to evaluate a viscosity from capillary viscometry data even in the case when the dissipation is important.

Notes: Abstract Voltage-step transient experiments are used to calibrate electrodiffusion (ED) friction probes. The approach is demonstrated on the probes in high-speed rotating impellers. This calibration has shown that shear rates as high as 106s-1 can be measured reliably using 0.5mm Pt working electrodes in ferro/ferricyanide aqueous solutions. The complete transient calibration experiment provides sufficient information about the dynamics of ED friction probes.

Notes: Abstract This paper presents electrodiffusional measurements of the wall shear rate at the impeller surface of a radial centrifugal pump. Twelve probes of different radii and at different positions along one blade were used in a pump with an open six bladed impeller. By means of throttling and speed control the operating point of the pump was adjusted and the influence on the wall shear rate was studied. The measurements were related to the analytical solution for a free rotating disc and the shear gradients were in the same order of magnitude.

Notes: Summary The finite-difference technique is used for analysis of Newtonian creeping flow through a helical rectangular duct of a helical screw agitator rotating in a draught tube. The results of the analysis are the fields of the stream function, vorticity, velocity components and pressure in the duct as well as the volumetric flow rate through the duct.

Notes: Summary The isothermal creeping flow of a Newtonian fluid through a draught tube with the rotating helical screw agitator in a mixing equipment is modelled by means of a two-dimensional flow through a helical rectangular duct. In order to incorporate the geometrical arrangement of the flow system as well as the kinematical boundary conditions at the solid walls into the mathematical formulation of the problem most easily, the equations of continuity and motion are expressed in a system of non-orthogonal helical coordinates. Introducing the stream function and component of the vorticity vector the transport equations are further simplified. The finite-difference method is proposed for the solution of the resulting system of equations.

Notes: Summary Experimentally obtained flow rates of a Newtonian fluid through a draught tube with a helical screw agitator are compared with theoretical predictions resulting from the mathematical model of creeping flow in a helical rectangular duct. Comparison of the experimental and theoretical results brings out that the solution of the mathematical model forms an adequate basis for determining the influence of the geometrical parameters of the agitator on the flow in the agitator-draught tube assembly.

Notes: Abstract The shape of the phase boundary of two fluids in systems with a rotational symmetry, and particularly the level of the liquid in a rotating vessel, is studied. The knowledge of the shape of the surface of such a liquid is necessary for centrifugal moulding of optical surfaces. The dimensionless surface equations are formulated, and the solutions of these equations, taking into account the boundary conditions, are discussed.
