Notes: Background. It has been reported that treatment with proton pump inhibitors (PPI) leads to partial elimination and suppression of Helicobacter pylori. In theory, since acid is known to denature immunoglobulins, this antibacterial activity of PPI may be due to a reduction in the acid output favouring humoral immunity.Materials and methods. We analysed prospectively fasting gastric juice in 54 consecutive patients attending upper endoscopy for pH and levels of IgG, IgA and IgM. In addition, two antral and two corpus biopsies were obtained and histologically examined for the presence of H. pylori.Results. 41/54 patients were infected with H. pylori. Immunoglobulines in the gastric juice of these patients were found in 25/41 (IgG), 27/41 (IgA), and 29/41 (IgM) patients. There was a highly significant difference in the gastric pH when H. pylori infected patients with measurable IgG, IgA, or IgM were compared with those in whom no immunoglobulines were found (median pH: 6 vs. 2 in each group; p 〈 .001)Conclusions. There is a close correlation between a high gastric pH and the presence of IgG, IgA, and IgM antibodies. Hence, it may be speculated that the efficacy of humoral immunity following H. pylori infection depends on a high pH such as resulting from PPI treatment.

Notes: Abstract An isoelectric focusing procedure for the detection of oligoclonal IgA in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples is presented. CSF IgA bands were found in 69% of patients with various inflammatory neurological diseases, in 22% of patients with other neurological diseases, but in none of the patients with non-neurological diseases. In patients with inflammatory neurological diseases we examined the relationship between an intrathecal synthesis of oligoclonal IgA and an intrathecal IgA synthesis as proved by a formula recently described by Reiber and Felgenhauer: 83% of patients with an intrathecal IgA synthesis according to the formula of Reiber and Felgenhauer also showed CSF IgA bands whereas 59% of patients without an intrathecal IgA synthesis displayed an intrathecal synthesis of oligoclonal IgA. Seventeen percent of patients with inflammatory neurological diseases were characterized by an intrathecal synthesis of oligoclonal IgA but did not show either an intrathecal IgA synthesis or an intrathecal synthesis of oligoclonal IgG, the detection of oligoclonal IgA therefore being the only evidence of an intrathecal humoral immune response in these patients.

Description / Table of Contents: Radical polymerization of organic monomers in room-temperature curable polydimethylsiloxanes (PDMS) yields liquid dispersions of thermoplastic polymers in PDMS. Graft copolymers of organic polymers and PDMS generated in the polymerization stabilize these dispersions like nonionic surfactants and act as a link between organic polymer particles and PDMS-matrix after vulcanization. This linkage and the special, rod-like shape of the polymer particles cause reinforcing effects, leading to vulcanizates that show unusual toughness in comparison to ordinary silicone rubber.
