Notes: Abstract The microstructure and the composition of CVD silicon carbide films used as fiber coatings in composite materials were investigated by photoelectron spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The films with a uniform thickness of 50 nm consisted of small SiC grains with a mean diameter of 15 nm and showed a stripe contrast in bright field images. Large grains with diameters in the dimension of the film thickness were used for imaging the lattice structure by high-resolution electron microscopy. The results are discussed as a polytype of cubic lamellae of a few nanometers and intermediate random stacking sequences of hexagonal structure.

Notes: Abstract A cold working steel was coated both with high temperature CVD (TiN) and moderate temperature CVD (Ti[C,N]). AES depth profiles show a significant difference at the interface, where a thin oxide layer remains detectable at deposition temperatures of 750 °C. It could be shown that an impedance signal at a frequency of 13 MHz is well suited to detect the early stages of the growth of a CVD coating.

Notes: Abstract Investigations of residual stresses have been carried out on unidirectionally carbon fibre reinforced aluminium using X-ray diffraction. It was found that the carbon exists in compression parallel to the fibre axis and in tension perpendicular to the fibre axis after the fabrication of the MMCs by a liquid infiltration process. Furthermore, it was observed that the intermetallic phase Al3Ni was in tension (+ 100 MPa) parallel to the fibre axis and in considerable residual compression (– 400 MPa) perpendicular to the fibre axis.

Description / Table of Contents: Fatigue behaviour of High Temperature Brazed Joints tested at elevated temperaturesFatigue testing, on a systematic and statistical basis, was carried our on high temperature brazed joints produced in the base metal NiCr20TiAl joined with BNi-5 and BAu-4 filler metals. The single-stage tests were conducted with various temperatures of 500 and 700 °C. Microscopic examination of the fracture surfaces (SEM) yielded information about crack initiation and propagation and the fracture behaviour of the joints.

Notes: Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) is a technique for producing structural parts under temperatures and pressures in a special sort of a sintering process. HIP is on one hand a forming technique, on the other hand a densifying technique HIP can also be used for diffusion welding especially for metal and ceramic composites.

Description / Table of Contents: The Influence of High Temperature Brazing under Defined Load on Crystallisation Behaviour of Filler MaterialsThe crystallisation behaviour of high temperature filler metals has to be examined in regard to it's volume increase during solidification. Thermodynamic laws show that an increase of pressure may hinder the growth of phases. This optimizes the quality of the joints.

Description / Table of Contents: Investigations of the thermal expansion behaviour of electron beam welded and high temperature brazed NICr20TiAl-jointsThermal elongation of NiCr20TiAl-joints is greatly determined by thermal influence during the joining process or after heat treatment. The coefficients of thermal expansion (10-6 · K-1) between 20 and 900°C are for NiCr20TiAl solution treated, α = 16,74, electron beam welded, α = 17,33 and high temperature brazed joints with B-Ni5, α = 15,63. During the cooling period, α differs which can be assumed due to the γ′-precipitation hardening.

Description / Table of Contents: Contribution to the Strength Increase of High Temperature Brazed Titanium MaterialsPure titanium and the titanium alloys TiAl6V4 and TiV 8 Cr 6 Mo 4 Zr 4 Al 3 were high temperature brazed with the filler metal CuTi30. The structures of the brazed seams have been analysed by optical microscopy and scanning electron beam microscopy. Moreover, the tensile strength of the brazed joints was examined at room temperature. The joints brazed in vacuum or under controlled atmosphere as well as those brazed in air came up to 95° of the tensile strength of the base materials. The results are discussed with regard to the influence of the brazing process on the microstructure and the mechanical properties of the base material.
