Notes: Many rashes have been attributed to thiouracil therapy, but severe vasculitis is rare. A distinct pattern of cutaneous vasculitis affecting limbs, face and ears has been described with propylthiouracil, and is particularly associated with treatment of more than 18 months duration. A positive Antinuclear Antibody (ANA) in the absence of LE cells is often demonstrated. We describe the first such case due to methylthiouracil therapy, the bullous haemorrhagic rash having the histology of pyoderma gangrenosum, and we review the available literature regarding this pattern of vasculitis.

Notes: Purpose - A theater/drama perspective is used to gain insights into the participatory nature of service creation and to assess the relative importance of service elements across service scenarios. Design/methodology/approach - Drama production principles are applied to situations where customers co-create the service offering. Using a theater arts model, elements in service settings can be delineated into director, lead actor, set designer, scriptwriter, supporting cast member, and/or traditional audience roles. To understand the relative importance of the service provider, the customer, and other service encounter elements, three variations of a service setting (educational services) in which the consumer's participatory role moves from passive to proactive are compared. Findings - As the service context became more participatory-based, service provider roles significantly decreased in importance rankings while customer roles significantly increased, supporting the paper's hypotheses. The ranking of other service setting elements followed a similar pattern with greater importance being placed on elements as they became more central to the participatory experience. Research limitations/implications - The model is tested in only one service setting and the procedure for assigning theater roles to a service setting needs further refinement. Originality/value - By merging theories from theater and services literature, a means of assessing the relative importance of service components across service scenarios is illustrated. Principles in theater arts provide the tactical detail needed to fit service creation elements into analogous roles in a drama setting. The model provides insights on the importance of service creation elements when transitioning from a spectator-based to a participatory-based service environment.

Notes: Abstract Using dizocilpine (MK-801), we tested the hypothesis that N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors are important controllers of cerebral O2 supply/consumption balance in newborn piglets both during normoxia and hypoxia. Twenty-five 2 to 7-day-old piglets were anesthetized and divided into four groups: (1) Normoxia (n = 6), (2) Normoxia + MK-801 (n = 6), (3) Hypoxia (n = 6), and (4) Hypoxia + MK-801 (n = 7). Regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in ml/min/100 g was measured using 14C-iodoantipyrine, and we determined arterial and venous O2 saturations by microspectrophotometry, calculating cerebral O2 consumption (VO2) in ml O2/min/100 g in the cortex, hypothalamus and pons. MK-801 did not significantly affect regional VO2 or rCBF in normoxic piglets. Hypoxia resulted in an increase in local rCBF compared to controls: from 41 ± 6 to 103 ± 18 in the cortex; 34 ± 7 to 101 ± 20 in the hypothalamus; and 45 ± 10 to 95 ± 11 in the pons. Pretreatment with MK-801 abolished this hypoxic flow effect in the cortex (51 ± 2) and hypothalamus (49 ± 5), but not in the pons (91 ± 17). Similar results were observed for VO2 with control values of 1.9 ± 0.3, 1.6 ± 0.2 and 2.1 ± 0.3 for the cortex, hypothalamus and pons respectively. Hypoxia resulted in an increase in the VO2 to 3.9 ± 0.4 (cortex), 3.8 ± 0.6 (hypothalamus) and 3.9 ± 0.8 (pons). Pretreatment with MK-801 prior to hypoxia abolished these effects in the cortex (2.1 ± 0.2) and hypothalamus (2.1 ± 0.2), but not in the pons (2.9 ± 0.2). These findings suggest that NMDA receptors may play a role in the control of cerebral metabolism during hypoxia in this immature porcine model.

Notes: Abstract The sequence and expression characteristics are described of a wilt-inducible gene in Arabidopsis thaliana. A 1494 encodes a potential thiol protease whose mRNA accumulates rapidly in shoot tissue upon the loss of turgor. A1494 mRNA levels peaked after ca. 4 h and declined thereafter. Dehydration also induced rapid biosynthesis of the phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA), which continued for at least 9 h. Exogenous ABA induced the accumulation of A1494 mRNA, with kinetics similar to those after wilting. Rehydration of wilted shoots led to a rapid decline in the content of both ABA and A1494 mRNA. Wilting and ABA independently induced A1494 expression as evidenced by the effects of ABA and wilting on the ABA-deficient aba-1 and ABA-insensitive abi-1 and abi-3 genotypes. A1494 mRNA was not detectable in aba-1 shoots but accumulated rapidly after either wilting or ABA treatment, whereas the shoot ABA content was increased only by ABA treatment. ABA had no effect on A1494 mRNA levels in the abi-1 and abi-3 mutants but wilting did result in enhanced A1494 expression. Heat shock had only a minor effect on A1494 mRNA levels, whereas exposure to low temperature resulted in substantial accumulation of A1494 mRNA in wild-type shoots. However, this latter response, unlike that to drought, was mediated exclusively via ABA synthesis as demonstrated by the lack of A1494 mRNA accumulation in cold-treated aba-1 shoots.
