    Notizen: The upper deck of the East Athabasca mylonite triangle (EAmt), northern Saskatchewan, Canada, contains mafic granulites that have undergone high P–T metamorphism at conditions ranging from 1.3 to 1.9 GPa, 890–960 °C. Coronitic textures in these mafic granulites indicate a near-isothermal decompression path to 0.9 GPa, 800 °C. The Godfrey granite occurs to the north adjacent to the upper deck high P–T domain. Well-preserved corona textures in the Godfrey granite constrain igneous crystallization and early metamorphism in the intermediate-pressure granulite field (Opx + Pl) at 1.0 GPa, 775 °C followed by metamorphism in the high pressure granulite field (Grt + Cpx + Pl) at 1.2 GPa, 860 °C. U–Pb geochronology of zircon in upper deck mafic granulite yields evidence for events at both c. 2.5 Ga and c. 1.9 Ga. The oldest zircon dates are interpreted to constrain a minimum age for crystallization or early metamorphism of the protolith. A population of 1.9 Ga zircon in one mafic granulite is interpreted to constrain the timing of high P–T metamorphism. Titanite from the mafic granulites yields dates ranging from 1900 to 1894 Ma, and is interpreted to have grown along the decompression path, but still above its closure temperature, indicating cooling following the high P–T metamorphism from c. 960–650 °C in 4–10 Myr. Zircon dates from the Godfrey granite indicate a minimum crystallization age of 2.61 Ga, without any evidence for 1.9 Ga overgrowths. The data indicate that an early granulite facies event occurred at c. 2.55–2.52 Ga in the lower crust (c. 1.0 GPa), but at 1.9 Ga the upper deck underwent high P–T metamorphism, then decompressed to 0.9–1.0 GPa. Juxtaposition of the upper deck and Godfrey granite would have occurred after or been related to this decompression. In this model, the high P–T rocks are exhumed quickly following the high pressure metamorphism. This type of metamorphism is typically associated with collisional orogenesis, which has important implications for the Snowbird tectonic zone as a fundamental boundary in the Canadian Shield.

    Notizen: Porphyroblast inclusion fabrics are consistent in style and geometry across three Proterozoic metamorphic field gradients, comprising two pluton-related gradients in central Arizona and one regional gradient in northern New Mexico. Garnet crystals contain curved ‘sigmoidal’ inclusion trails. In low-grade chlorite schists, these trails can be correlated directly with matrix crenulations of an older schistosity (S1). The garnet crystals preferentially grew in crenulation hinges, but some late crenulations nucleated on existing garnet porphyroblasts. At higher grade, biotite, staurolite and andalusite porphyroblasts occur in a homogeneous S2 foliation primarily defined by matrix biotite and ilmenite. Biotite porphyroblasts have straight to sigmoidal inclusion trails that also represent the weakly folded S1 schistosity. Staurolite and andalusite contain distinctive inclusion-rich and inclusion-poor domains that represent a relict S2 differentiated crenulation cleavage. Together, the inclusion relationships document the progressive development of the S2 fabric through six stages. Garnet and biotite porphyroblasts contain stage 2 or 3 crenulations; staurolite and andalusite generally contain stage 4 crenulations, and the matrix typically contains a homogeneous stage 6 cleavage.The similarity of inclusion relationships across spatially and temporally distinct metamorphic field gradients of widely differing scales suggests a fundamental link between metamorphism and deformation. Three end-member relationships may be involved: (1) tectonic linkages, where similar P-T-time histories and similar bulk compositions combine to produce similar metamorphic and structural signatures; (2) deformation-controlled linkages, where certain microstructures, particularly crenulation hinges, are favourable environments for the nucleation and/or growth of porphyroblasts; and (3) reaction-controlled linkages, where metamorphic reactions, particularly dehydration reactions, are associated with an increase in the rate of fabric development. A general model is proposed in which (1) garnet and biotite porphyroblasts preferentially grow in stage 2 or 3 crenulation hinges, and (2) chlorite-consuming metamorphic reactions lead to pulses in the rate of fabric evolution. The data suggest that fabric development and porphyroblast growth may have been quite rapid, of the order of several hundreds of thousands of years, in these rocks. These microstructures and processes may be characteristic of low-pressure, first-cycle metamorphic belts.

    Notizen: For a sample of liquid confined in a hard-walled spherical container it is shown by computer simulation and by statistical mechanics that the conventional virial pressure for a notional sphere of radius r is not the correct thermodynamic normal pressure on the surface of the sphere but is the local kinetic contribution only, ρ(r)kT. In other words, ρ¯(r)kT+[1/3V(r)]〈Jiri⋅Fiθ(r −ri)〉=ρ(r)kT, where ρ¯(r) is the mean density inside the sphere of radius r and volume V(r). This result is true for any intermolecular interaction derivable from a potential and is a good approximation for any reasonable wall potential for regions outside the range of the wall potential.

    Notizen: Abstract. Structural and physiological aspects of the parenchymatous bundle sheath (PBS) were studied in cultivars of Hordeum distichum L. The PBS of intermediate, lateral and midrib veins consisted of a single layer of cells closely appressed to the mestome sheath. These cells were large, vacuolate and approximately cylindrical in shape, extending parallel to the vein. Mean PBS cell volume was 4 × 10−5mm3 compared to 1.23 × 10−5mm3 for mesophyll cells. Transverse sections revealed three cell types within the PBS, cells with small chloroplasts (S-type), cells with large chloroplasts (L-type) and structural cells. The majority of cells were S-type, containing chloroplasts of approximately a third of the volume of mesophyll chloroplasts; they were able to reduce tetranitro blue-tetrazolium and synthesize starch. Structural cells interrupted the phloem and xylem are of the sheath in lateral veins and the midrib, whilst between one and four PBS cells within the phloem are of each vein type contained chloroplasts similar in volume and starch content to those of the mesophyll. Only these L-type cells contained noticeable starch grains at the end of an 8-h dark period, a further 4 h darkness being required for complete mobilization of starch. Starch deposition within S-type and structural cells was detectable after 4 h illumination but was only appreciable in leaves excised from the plant and illuminated for 9–12 h. The role of S-type PBS cells in assimilate transport is discussed in relation to these findings.

    Notizen: Abstract. Herbaceous C3 plants grown in elevated CO2 show increases in carbon assimilation and carbohydrate accumulation (particularly starch) within source leaves. Although changes in the partitioning of biomass between root and shoot occur, the proportion of this extra assimilate made available for sink growth is not known. Root:shoot ratios tend to increase for CO2-enriched herbaceous plants and decrease for CO2-enriched trees. Root:shoot ratios for cereals tend to remain constant. In contrast, elevated temperatures decrease carbohydrate accumulation within source and sink regions of a plant and decrease root:shoot ratios. Allometric analysis of at least two species showing changes in root: shoot ratios due to elevated CO2 show no alteration in the whole-plant partitioning of biomass. Little information is available for interactions between temperature and CO2. Cold-adapted plants show little response to elevated levels of CO2, with some species showing a decline in biomass accumulation. In general though, increasing temperature will increase sucrose synthesis, transport and utilization for CO2-enriched plants and decrease carbohydrate accumulation within the leaf. Literature reports are discussed in relation to the hypothesis that sucrose is a major factor in the control of plant carbon partitioning. A model is presented in support.

    Notizen: Abstract A continuous stationary signal possessing non-Gaussian higher order statistics cannot be correctly modelled by any discrete process based on passing independently and identically distributed noise through a linear filter. In particular, it is shown that at third order there exists no discrete skewed linear model with a discrete bispectrum that is the same as that obtained from the Nyquist samples of any continuous stationary process. The nature of the problem is elucidated and an alternative method for modelling the third order statistics of continuous stationary processes is proposed.
