    Notes: Abstract Molecular, or static, secondary ion mass Spectroscopy (SIMS) is applied to the detection of organic molecules in amorphous titanium carbide films. The presence of such organic clusters is thought to stabilize the amorphous phase to higher temperatures (〉1000°C) and greater thicknesses. The high corrosion resistance properties of the TiC deposits are also attributed to the inclusion of such molecular entities. The processes whereby these molecular entities in the films are transformed into secondary ions during SIMS analysis are also investigated. It is shown that the dominant ionization mechanisms in this case are electron and momentum transfer.

    Notes: A new grade of graphite - isotropic, fine-grained, and of superior strength - has been produced at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The possibility of using this material in orthopedic implants is under study at the University of Illinois. As part of this program, plugs 1/8 in. in diam were inserted in holes drilled in the proximal femur of 2 groups of 8-week old male rabbits. The groups were sacrificed at the end of 1 and 2 years. A single i.m. injection of achromycin was given 2 days prior to sacrifice. Thin sections of the plugs and surrounding tissue were examined by microradiography and optical microscopy (white light, polarizing, and fluorescent). All bone was normal. Minimal evidence of irritation or fibrous encapsulation appeared.

    Notes: Physiologically moist bone and dry bone behave differently when tested for electrical response to cantilever bending. To characterize this difference more precisely, voltages were generated in the same specimen in each of the two states via the same testing procedure - changing the electrode-to-force distance by moving the electrodes and holding the force position constant. In the dry state, a nonsystematic pattern of voltages versus electrode position was generated. In the wet state, a linear relationship was found. Furtive on wetting the specimen. The implication is that different electromechanical transduction mechanisms are involved in the wet dry cases. The dominant mechanism in the wet case is taken to be the streaming potential rather than piezoelectricity.
