    Notes: A new anti-oestrogen, tamoxifen, has been synthesized and is available for clinical trials. Its value in the treatment of anovulatory infertility has been assessed in 32 patients. A total of 26 patients apparently ovulated, 16 patients conceived during a treatment cycle, and 2 patients became pregnant during the first spontaneous cycle thereafter. There was no increase in the abortion rate and there were no multiple pregnancies. Side-effects were uncommon and none were serious.

    Notes: A case of ascites, right-sided hydrothorax and subserous parasitic fibromyoma is described. The history suggested repeated attacks of degeneration and ascites occurring over twelve months. Since hysteretomy the patient has remained well for two and a half years. Eleven such cases are reviewed.

    Notes: The potential for intra-uterine metabolism of prostaglandins in early pregnancy was studied by incubation of prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α) with tissues obtained by termination hysterectomy at 7 and 16 weeks gestation. Enzymes regulating the degradation of prostaglandins were demonstrated in placenta and membranes and to a lesser extent, in myometrium and decidua. It is believed that these enzymes may have a physiological rôle in maintaining the continuity of pregnancy, and that the high degradation of PGF2α in placenta and membranes may be one of the reasons that, for termination of pregnancy, far higher doses are required intra-amniotically than extra-amniotically.

    Notes: We report the results obtained with a standard system of gonadotrophin therapy. Seventy-seven consecutive patients were given 322 treatment cycles. Thirty-seven patients (48 per cent) conceived, six of them on two occasions, making 43 preg-nancies of which 31.6 per cent were multiple. Five per cent of all treatment cycles were complicated by mild, and 0.62 per cent by severe hyperstimulation. The factors involved in achieving a satisfactory pregnancy rate whilst avoiding complications are discussed. Most complications occurred during the first cycle in which the rise in oestrogen excretion suggested follicular development and human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG) was given (the “first effective” treatment cycle). In such cycles the risk of hyperstimulation rose sharply when the day 6 urinary total oestrogen level was above 150 μg. per 24 hours and the multiple pregnancy rate was increased by a large dose of HCG.

    Notes: We demonstrate single electron charging in fully controllable nanoscale quantum devices at temperatures above 4 K. Hitherto, single electron devices operating at "high'' temperatures have been two-terminal, having no control electrode, whereas fully tunable structures such as quantum dots have only shown charging effects at temperatures of 4 K or less. We have fabricated ultrasmall quantum dots on modulation doped heterostructures where the two-dimensional electron gas is less than 30 nm from the surface. Dots with lithographic diameter 150 nm show Coulomb oscillations up to temperatures of 7 K. Higher temperature operation allows potential applications to be considered without the need, for example, of a dilution fridge. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract We have studied charging effects in a lateral split-gate quantum dot defined by metal gates in the two dimensional electron gas (2 DEG) of a GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure. The gate structure allows an independent control of the conductances of the two tunnel barriers separating the quantum dot from the two 2 DEG leads, and enables us to vary the number of electrons that are localized in the dot. We have measured Coulomb oscillations in the conductance and the Coulomb staircase in current-voltage characteristics and studied their dependence on the conductances of the tunnel barriers. We show experimentally that at zero magnetic field charging effects start to affect the transport properties when both barrier conductances are smaller than the first quantized conductance value of a point contact at 2e 2/h. The experiments are described by a simple model in terms of electrochemical potentials, which includes both the discreteness of the electron charge and the quantum energy states due to confinement.
