    Notizen: In situ biorestoration, where applicable, is indicated as a potentially very cost-effective and environmentally acceptable remediation technology. Many contaminants in solution in ground water as well as vapors in the unsaturated zone can be completely degraded or transformed into new compounds by naturally occurring indigenous microbial populations. Undoubtedly, thousands of contamination events are remediated naturally before the contamination reaches a point of detection. The need is for methodology to determine when natural biorestoration is occurring, the stage the restoration process is in, whether enhancement of the process is possible or desirable, and what will happen if natural processes are allowed to run their course.In addition to the nature of the contaminant, several environmental factors are known to influence the capacity of indigenous microbial populations to degrade contaminants. These factors include dissolved oxygen, pH, temperature, oxidation-reduction potential, availability of mineral nutrients, salinity, soil moisture, the concentration of specific pollutants, and the nutritional quality of dissolved organic carbon in the ground water.Most enhanced in situ bioreclamation techniques available today are variations of hydrocarbon degradation procedures pioneered and patented by Raymond and coworkers at Suntech during the period 1974 to 1978. Nutrients and oxygen are introduced through injection wells and circulated through the contaminated zone by pumping one or more producing wells.The limiting factor in remediation technology is getting the contaminated subsurface material to the treatment unit or units, or in the case of in situ processes, getting the treatment process to the contaminated material. The key to successful remediation is a thorough understanding of the hydrogeologic and geochemical characteristics of the contaminated area.

    Notizen: At a number of sites, a plume of methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) in ground water has dived below the screen of conventional monitoring wells and escaped detection. Techniques are needed to predict the vertical extent of MTBE in an aquifer. Two techniques that are emerging in the site characterization market are electrical conductivity logging and pneumatic slug testing performed in temporary push wells. These techniques were evaluated at a diving plume of MTBE in the aquifer that supplies water to the village of East Alton, Illinois. The plume stayed near the water table for the first 100 m from the potential sources and then dived below conventional monitoring over the next 100 m. At the location where the MTBE plume dived, the depth to water was 9.1 m below land surface. The first 10 m of material below the water table had an electrical conductivity near 100 mS/m, indicating silts and clays. An electrical conductivity near 25 mS/m, indicating sands or gravels, was encountered at a depth of 10.6 m below the water table, and the sands and gravel extended to a depth of at least 15.2 m below the water table. Pneumatic slug tests measured low hydraulic conductivity in the interval of silt and clay (0.34 and 0.012 m/d) and higher hydraulic conductivity in the interval with sands and gravels (12.5, 11.6, and 11.3 m/d). Ground water with the highest concentration of MTBE was produced just below the contact between the silt and clay and the sands and gravel.

    Notizen: At room temperature (20° ± 3°C), purge and trap samplers provide poor sensitivity for analysis of the fuel oxygenates that are alcohols, such as tertiary butyl alcohol (TBA). Because alcohols are miscible or highly soluble in water, they are not efficiently transferred to a gas chromatograph for analysis. To improve the efficiency of transfer, the water in a purge and trap sampler can be heated. Alternatively, the sensitivity for TBA can be improved by preparing the sample in a heated static headspace sampler. In a heated water sample, the acid used as a preservative may cause chemical hydrolysis of methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) to produce TBA. This effect is well illustrated in this paper using data collected by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Office of Research and Development on a plume of MTBE in California. Samples were analyzed using a static head-space sampler heated to 80°C. The ground water samples were preserved in the field with HCl to a pH ≤ 2. The extent of MTBE hydrolysis to TBA during sample analysis varied from 19% to 87%; the average extent of hydrolysis was 59%. To confirm and document the importance of acid hydrolysis of MTBE at higher temperatures during sample preparation, the rate of hydrolysis of MTBE was measured at 80°C. At pH = 1, the rate of hydrolysis was 1.22/h, while the rate at pH = 2 was 0.15/h. Acid hydrolysis of MTBE during sample preparation in a heated headspace sampler can be avoided by preserving the sample with 1% (w/w) trisodium phosphate dodecahydrate (TSP) instead of using HCl, or by neutralizing the acid before analysis. In the presence of an acclimated microbial culture, TSP prevented biodegradation of MTBE, as well as benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene compounds, in ground water at room temperature for 66 d. However, in a spike recovery experiment, TSP caused based catalyzed hydrolysis of bromomethane. It is not appropriate as a universal preservative.

    Notizen: The ability to confidently measure the concentration of dissolved oxygen (D.O.) in ground water is a key aspect of remedy selection and assessment. Presented here is a comparison of the commonly practiced methods for determining D.O. concentrations in ground water, including colorimetric, membrane-covered electrode, and modified Winkler techniques. The Winkler titration (azide and permanganate modifications) is the most accurate and precise technique for determining D.O. and is appropriate for applications with stringent data quality objectives. In addition, excellent correlation over a wide range of D.O. concentrations was found between Winkler titrations and colorimetric tests using the rhodazine D (below 1 part per million [ppm]) and indigo carmine reagents (above 1 ppm). Electrode measurements represent the simplest method for determining D.O. concentrations on a continuous basis and electrode determinations positively correlate with Winkler results above 1 ppm. Below 1 ppm, electrodes provide only a qualitative measure of low D.O. level, apparently due to slow electrode response.

    Notizen: Direct-push sampling was conducted at a site previously characterized with conventional monitoring wells. Hydrogeological and chemical heterogeneities not represented in the original site conceptual model were detected by direct-push sampling. These heterogeneities were important in terms of their impact on the assessment of monitored natural attenuation at the site. This research suggests that additional sampling efforts could be attempted at some sites to test the accuracy of site conceptual models. The leading edge of a contaminant plume must be examined closely, because conceptual errors in this area could easily allow impacts to receptors to remain undetected.

    Notizen: To manage risk or to implement natural attenuation as a remedy, regulatory agencies must understand the processes that attenuate methyl-tert-butyl ether (MTBE) in ground water. Most case studies and laboratory studies in the literature indicate that natural biodegradation is not important; however, recent reports indicate that natural biodegradation of MTBE plays an important role under certain conditions. In an MTBE plume at a retail gasoline station in Parsippany, New Jersey, the long-term monitoring data indicated that the concentration of MTBE was slowly declining over time in the wells that were within the footprint of the plume. The ratio of tert-butyl alcohol (TBA) to MTBE increased with distance from the source area, and the ratio of TBA to MTBE in individual monitoring wells in the plume increased over time. This anecdotal evidence of natural biodegradation of MTBE to TBA at field scale was confirmed with a microcosm study. Core material from the interior of the plume was used to construct the microcosms. Following an initial lag period of 58 d, the concentration of MTBE decreased from more than 1460 μg/L to less than 10 μg/L within 199 d of incubation. As concentrations of MTBE declined in the microcosms, concentrations of TBA increased. The decrease in concentration of MTBE in the microcosms could be accounted for by an increase in the concentration of TBA.

    Notizen: Two methods were used to approximate site-specific biodegradation rates of monoaromatic hydrocarbons (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes [BTEX]) dissolved in ground water. Both use data from monitoring wells and the hydrologic properties of the quifer to estimate a biodegradation rate constant that can be used in ground water solute fate and transport models. The first method uses a biologically recalcitrant tracer in the ground water associated with the hydrocarbon plume to normalize changes in concentration of BTEX under anaerobic conditions; attenuation of the tracer is attributed to dilution, sorption, and/or volatilization. Attenuation of BTEX in excess of the attenuation of the tracer is attributed to biodegradation, although other processes may affect the observed rate. The second method assumes that the plume has evolved to a dynamic steady-state equilibrium. A one-dimensional analytical solution to the advection-dispersion equation is used to extract the rate of attenuation that would be necessary to produce a steady-state plume of the configuration found at the site. Attention is attributed largely to biodegradation bacause the analytical solution removes the effects of sorption and dispersion and volatilization is assumed to be minimal.Neither method fully accounts for the effects of continuing dissolution of BTEX in the source area or nonlinear sorption. Therefore, the rats cannot be attributed fully to biodegradation, but still are useful for ground water contaminant fate and transport modeling. The methods were applied to a data set from a JP-4 jet fuel spill at Hill Air Force Base, Utah. In estimats along two seprate flow paths, natural attenuation rates for BTEX ranged form 0.006 to 0.038 day−1, with most rates near 0.02 day−1. The rate for benzene ranged from 0.025 to 0.038 day−1. The rates of attenuation of individual BTEX compounds as estimated by the two methods were in close aggrement. For an individual compound, the rate estimated using the second method was at most 36 percent greater than, but usually within 20 percent of, the rate estimated using the first method, suggesting that intrinsic bioremediation was the dominant process that attenuated BTEX.

    Notizen: Although tert-butyl alcohol (TBA) has not been used as a fuel oxygenate in Orange County, California, the concentrations of TBA in ground water at gasoline spill sites are high compared those of the conventional fuel oxygenate methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE). In the year 2002, the geometric mean concentration of TBA was 839 μg/L compared to 627 μg/L for MTBE. There are two plausible sources of TBA, the TBA originally present in the gasoline and biodegradation of MTBE to TBA. Thirteen sites where the concentration of TBA was 〉10 mg/L were selected for study. Biodegradation was evaluated by determining the stable carbon isotope ratio (δ13C) of MTBE in the ground water. If MTBE was biodegraded, the residual MTBE should be enriched in the heavier carbon isotope 13C. The historical highest concentration of MTBE in each monitoring well and the δ13C of MTBE in the ground water were used to estimate the concentration of TBA produced from biodegradation of MTBE. Then, the estimated concentration of TBA was compared to the measured concentration. At each site, comparisons were made for the well in the source area, and the well in the plume outside the source area, that had the highest concentration of TBA. In the wells in the source areas, the estimate of TBA production accounted for the majority of TBA at 4 of the 13 sites. In the wells in the plume outside of the source area, the estimate accounted for the majority of TBA at six sites.
