Notes: Abstract The effect of deformation and heat-treatments on magnetisation of superconducting Mo/34 at.% Re alloy was investigated. The microstructure was studied using optical and electron microscopy. The values of the parameterκ of the GLAG theory were determined by using three different methods, and they are found to be in accordance with some of the predictions of the Maki theory. The results show that in deformed specimens the magnetic hysteresis is mainly due to the interaction of Abrikosov supercurrent vortices with dislocation tangles; both twin boundaries and grain boundaries are relatively ineffective in causing flux hindrance. The hysteresis observed after annealing has been explained in terms of the occurrence of dislocation rearrangement and the precipitation of the sigma phase. Flux-pinning by dislocation tangles has been treated as a special case of pinning by normal particles and a magnitude of the resulting pinning force is obtained. The experimental results are compared with the predictions of a theoretical model of flux-pinning.

Notes: Abstract CuInSe2 thin films were prepared by the selenization of metallic precursors in an atmosphere containing H2Se gas. Device-quality (homogeneous and dense films with excellent compositional uniformity) CuInSe2 films were obtained when Cu/In/Cu structures were exposed to H2Se/Ar while the temperature was ramped between 150 and 400°C. Auger studies indicated that the composition of the films was relatively uniform through their thickness. Transmission electron microscopy studies indicated that copper-rich samples exhibited large facetted grains (1–4 μm) with relatively low defect density. Indium-rich films were characterized by relatively small grains (0.2–0.8 μm), which were highly defected. CuInSe2/CdS/ZnO solar cells were fabricated using chemically etched (in KCN) copper-rich CuInSe2 absorber films, and conversion efficiencies of 5% were obtained without the use of an antireflection coating. © 1998 Kluwer Academic Publishers

Notes: Abstract Brief reviews are given of the effect of heat-treatment on the microstructure of cold-worked bcc metals and the superconducting properties of niobium alloys. Particular attention is paid to the influence of interstitial impurities in these processes. The annealing effects in microstructure and superconducting properties of a cold-worked Nb-65 at.% Ti alloy, containing oxygen as a major impurity, have been studied. The precipitation process takes the form βTiNb + O2→ various Ti oxides → αTi + TiO. Differences in precipitation sequence are described for vacuum-annealing and annealing in impure argon. Flux-pinning is related to the microstructural observations. At least three pinning mechanisms appear to operate; dislocation pinning and two types of precipitate pinning. These observations are in accord with previously proposed pinning models.

Notes: Abstract A brief review is given of the formation and characteristics of conical surface structures resulting from ion etching. The effect of low-energy ion bombardment of 18-8 stainless steel surfaces has been studied. The topography generated has been related to microstructural detail. The conical protrusions are found to arise from slag silicate particles while the pillar type structures result from fibrous manganese sulphide inclusions. Scanning electron microscopy has shown the development of both of these structure types to be in accord with previously published ion-etching models.

Notes: Abstract Different methods of calculation based on ion channelling in a target matrix have been applied to the computation of the apex angle of surface conical shapes derived from ion bombardment. Comparison with values obtained experimentally by electron microscopy and deduced from sputter yield curves in the energy range 0.2 to 27.0 keV indicate that reasonable agreement can be achieved using a smeared Thomas Fermi atomic plane potential.

Notes: Abstract The construction process associated with the kinematic theorems of crystal dissolution due to Frank has been applied to the problem of determining the characteristics of surface topography caused by ion bombardment. Such an approach is shown to be valid by comparison between experimental results on and dissolution constructions applied to ion-etched spheres. Emphasis has been placed on determining the apex angle of equilibrium cone structures on crystalline materials. The values predicted for the apex angle by Frank's method have been found in good agreement with those measured experimentally and values derived from the peak of sputter yield curves or from ion channelling calculations. Using different starting shapes, the importance is stressed of ensuring the presence of adequate orientation directions without which only non-equilibrium dome type structures or pseudo-cones will develop.
