Notes: The copepods Limnocalanus macrurus G. O. Sars and Eucyclops serrulatus (Fisch.) and the ostracode Cytherissa lacustris (G. O. Sars), hitherto unknown on Spitsbergen, were found in Lake Rewatnet, the last species also in Lake Svartvatnet. Samples from parthenogenetic populations of C. lacustris showed a complete lack of electrophoretically detectable variability at four enzyme-encoding loci, two of which are highly variable in mainland populations. However, morphological variation in the carapace length and nodation was no less than in the mainland populations. The carapace valves of C. lacustris do not preserve well in the sediments of Rewatnet.

Notes: [Auszug] De novo synthesis of fatty acids in the cytosol of animal cells is carried out by the multifunctional, homodimeric fatty acid synthase (FAS). Cryo-EM analysis of single FAS particles imaged under conditions that limit conformational variability, combined with gold labeling of the N termini and ...

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract The vibronic equation describing coupling of the triplet exciton with the nuclear motions in the dimeric molecules is derived. Perturbation solutions corresponding to weak and strong coupling limits were treated. In the weak coupling limit the probability of exciton transfer is strongly diminished for the lowest vibronic states, in agreement with experiments of De Groot and Van der Waals.

Notes: Abstract A theoretical approach is proposed to explain the spectral changes in the X-H stretching region of hydrogen-bonded crystals. The model proposed here is restricted to a one dimensional crystal. The X-H stretching modes are supposed to be coupled to H-bond vibrations of lower frequency, and in general the separation of these modes is no longer possible. The fundamental hamiltonian describing this coupling is derived and formulae for quantities, such as intensity, bandwidth and center of gravity of the infrared line in the X-H stretching mode region are calculated.

Notes: Abstract It is shown using second quantization formalism and treating excitons as bosons that phonon-exciton coupling leads to exciton-exciton interaction. This interaction limits substantially the possibility of exciton condensation.

Notes: Thioesterase II from rat mammary gland has been crystallized in the presence of decanoic acid by the vapor diffusion method. The crystals belong to the orthorhombic space group P212121, and have cell dimensions, a = 52.7 Å, b = 78.0 Å, and c = 133.6 Å. The asymmetric unit likely consists of two protein monomers based on predictions from its calculated Matthews coefficient. Crystals typically diffract to at least 2.5 Å resolution and are suitable for X-ray crystallographic analysis. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
