Notes: Faraday rotation and magnetization in Hoya FR5 glass is investigated in a magnetic field up to 80 kG under cryogenic temperature between 4.2 K and 10 K at the wavelength of 514.5 nm. For H/T(approximately-greater-than)10 kG K−1, the saturation is observed both in magnetization and in Faraday rotation and is interpreted by using the quantum theory of paramagnetism about the doped Tb3+ active ion. It is found that the temperature dependence of the Verdet constant is correlated with the magnetic susceptibility and the dispersion of the Verdet constant is due to the effective electric dipole transition of 4f8→4f75d1 with the resonance wavelength of 213 nm. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The purpose of this study is to know the prevalence of allergic patch test responses in patients with suspected fragrance allergy in Korea and to know the photoxic potentials of limited fragrance substances. Nine dermatology departments of university hospitals and one research institute of cosmetic company were participated in this study for the past 1 year. To inquire the specific fragrance allergens in Korea, eighteen fragrance ingredients were added to Korean standard series and fragrance series (Chemotechnique Diagnosis, Sweden). Among 422 patients, 83% were women and the most common topographic site was face. Except the fragrance mix and Balsam of Peru, Cinnamic alcohol and Sandalwood oil showed high frequency of positive responses. Among the added specific fragrance ingredients, 3-methyl-5-(2,2,3-trimethyl-3-cyclopenen-1-yl) pent-4-en-2-ol, alpha-isomethyl-ionone(methyl ionone gamma), Lyral showed high positive responses. With eighteen added specific fragrance substances, we have also performed two in vitro phototoxicity tests, 3T3 NRU phototoxicity test and photohemolysis test. 3T3 NRU phototoxicity test is a screening method for DNA or cellular damage and Photohemolysis test is a useful screening method for phototoxic chemicals that cause oxygen-dependent membrane damage. Only Lyral showed phototoxicity in photohemolysis test and no other fragrance ubstances showed phototoxicity in 3T3 NRU phtototoxicity test. We think our data are useful to know the current status of the frequent fragrance allergens in our society and the possible phototoxic potency of limited fragrance substances.

Notes: A new method of measuring the longitudinal magneto-optic effect has been introduced. This method does not require a modulator; instead, the analyzer is rotated and the intensity of light is collected as a function of the analyzer angle. The Fourier analysis of the intensity date versus the analyzer angle yields the information about the rotation angle and the ellipticity of the transmitted light. This method is simple in design as well as fast and accurate in data acquisition by virtue of computer-assisted data collection. It was applied to the real samples of the optical glasses of Schott—SF2, F2, SF6, and SF10. The rotation angle was linearly proportional to the magnetic intensity and the Verdet constants showed a normal dispersion versus photon energy. The results were in a good agreement with other published values. Some possible applications of the present technique to the measurement of a very small birefringence have been discussed.

Notes: Capsaicin has been shown the different biologic and toxic effects on the non-neuronal celIs and serveral transformed cells. The present study aimed at evaluating the cytotoxic mechanism of capsacin on the cultured human skin fibroblast. Normal neonatal human fibroblasts were used for MTT assay to measure the changes of celI survival, while growth factors, receptor antagonist, antioxidants and calcium modulators were pretreated or co-treated with capsaicin. Fibroblast survival was significantly stimulated with EGF (10 ng/ml), bFGF (10 ng/ml) and capsazepine (10 µm) but inhibited by cycloheximide (1 µg/ml). When 200 µm capsaicin is given to fibroblasts, chromatin condensations were observed at 12 h, and cell survival rate was reduced to 25–50% at 24 h. Vanilloid receptor antagonists, capsazepine and ruthenium red did not prevent the toxic effect of capsaicin, and 10 µm capsazepine rather paradoxically enhanced the cytotoxicity. In contrast to bFGF (10 ng/ml), EGF (10, 100 ng/ml) enhanced the cytotoxicity of capsaicin. Neuropeptides, substance P (1, 10 nm) and CGRP (1, 10 nm), and a structural analogue to capsaicin, tyrosine (0.3–1.2 mm) did not affect the cytotoxicity. However, antioxidants trolox (100 µm) and ascorbic acid (0.1, 0.3 mm) reduced the capsaicin cytotoxicity. Of calcium-modulating agents, nifedifine, a Ca2+ channel blocker (10, 20 µm) and cyclopiazonic acid, a Ca2+-ATPase inhibitor in ER (10 µm) did not influence the cytotoxicity, but BAPTA/AM as a chelater for cytoplasmic free calcium ion (10 µm) significantly decreased capsaicin cytotoxicity. Unlike cycloheximide, a protein synthesis inhibitor, z-VAD-FMK, a non-specific caspase inhibitor, prevented the capsaicin cytotoxicity. The DNA ladder and TUNEL-positive cells were observed from the capsaicin-treated fibroblasts and Western blot revealed caspase-3 activity. Thus, capsaicin-induced cytotoxicity on human skin fibroblasts is more likely to suggest the mechanism of apoptotic pathway where antioxidants may play a role to prevent it.

Notes: Abstract The linear electrooptic (EO) effect of poled polymer thin film is measured in the coplanar-electrode structure. The optical geometry of the coplanar-electrode thin-film setup is analysed theoretically to find a relationship between the linear optical parameters and the EO modulation intensity. EO modulated intensity is measured as a function of the direction of incident light polarization relative to the macroscopic optic axis, also as a function of optical bias determined by quarter-wave plate. Comparison of experimental measurements with the theoretical analysis shows good agreement.
