    Notes: The thermal and magnetic properties of amorphous alloys prepared by melt spinning and vapor deposition have been studied in the system Nd100−xCox where 25≤x≤75. It is found that the alloys around the equiatomic composition are the most stable thermally. ac susceptibility studies show that the ordering temperatures of the amorphous phase increase with cobalt content from about 30 K in Nd60Co40 to about 90 K in Nd50Co50. Upon crystallization of the samples four different phases appear with ordering temperatures 24, 105, 140, and 190 K. The phases with ordering temperatures of 24 and 105 K have been identified with Nd3Co and NdCo2, respectively.

    Notes: Abstract A fast-fission blanket around a fusion plasma exploits high neutron multiplication for superior breeding and high-energy multiplication to generate significant net electrical power. A major improvement over previous fast-fission blanket concepts is the use of mobile fuel, namely a pebble-bed configuration with helium cooling. Upon loss of coolant, the mobile fuel can be gravity-dumped to a separately cooled dump tank before excessive temperatures are reached. The pebble bed is also compatible with rapid fuel exchange and a low-cost reprocessing method. With the ignited tokamak plasma producing 620 MW of fusion power, the net electric power is 1600 MWe and the annual fissile production exceeds 3 tonnes.

    Notes: Abstract There is a thin layer of organic lubricant on commercial silver (Ag) flakes that are widely used as the fillers in electrically conductive adhesives (ECAs). This lubricant layer highly affects the properties such as conductivity of the ECAs. Therefore, understanding the behavior of Ag flake lubricant layer is essential for developing high performance ECAs. This work is aimed at studying the chemical nature of the lubricant layer, interaction between the lubricant layer and Ag flakes, and thermal behavior of the lubricants during heating. A blank Ag powder is ball-milled into Ag flakes with five fatty acids that have different carbon–hydrogen chain length as lubricants. After lubrication, the Ag flakes are studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and thermogravimetry (TG), and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS). It is found that (i) Ag flakes lubricated with fatty acids of different chain lengths have exothermic DSC peaks and mass losses at different temperatures, (ii) the lubricant layer on the lubricated Ag flake surfaces is a salt formed between the acid and Ag, and (iii) exothermic DSC peaks (in air) of a lubricated Ag flake is probably due to the oxidation of lubricant layer on the Ag flake surface.

    Notes: Abstract There is a thin layer of organic lubricant on commercial silver flake surfaces. This lubricant layer is a fatty acid salt formed between a fatty acid and silver flake surfaces. Thermal decomposition behavior of the silver flake lubricant is investigated in this study. The heat flow and mass loss of a silver flake are studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetry (TG), respectively. The silver flake is also oven heated to different isothermal temperatures (150,190, 250 and 300°C) for one h. Then chemical nature of the lubricant of the heated silver flake sample are studied using diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transfer spectroscopy (DRIFTS). Based on the results, a mechanism of thermal decomposition of the silver flake lubricant is proposed. It is found that decomposition of the lubricant - the fatty acid salt -includes the release of the fatty acid, formation of short chain acids by decomposition of hydrocarbon moiety of the fatty acid, and formation of alcohols through decarbonation of the short chain acids.

    Notes: The investigation involved the structure-property behavior of extruded cast films prepared from blends of thermotropic liquid crystalline copolyesters with poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET). Data were obtained which showed not only the temperature dependence of the moduli and stress-strain behavior but also the orientation effects that must be prevalent in order to explain the differences between the moduli measured parallel and perpendicular to the extrusion direction. Only at high liquid crystal polymer (LCP) composition is the modulus particularly increased. The modulus enhancement with lower LCP content and utilization of process variables are discussed with respect to the induced morphological textures and nature of the process equipment. Specifically, the process variable extruder gear pump speed did not enhance Young's modulus at the same LCP content as extensively as did the process variable of extruder screw speed.
