    Notes: The chemical reactivity of hydrogen-passivated surface of silicon nanowires (SiNWs) towards the reductive deposition of silver and copper ions from solution is reported. SiNWs synthesized by laser ablation were used in the investigation. The surface properties of SiNWs after the removal of the surface oxide were studied. It is found that the surface silicon of the SiNWs can readily reduce silver (I) and copper (II) ions to metal aggregates of various morphologies on the SiNW surface at room temperature. The reaction products have been characterized with scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. By varying the concentration of Ag(I) ions in the solution, nanostructures of silver with different shapes and sizes can be obtained. This approach for synthesis of metal nanostructures offers a potential method for the preparation of desired metal catalysts. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A one-step procedure has been developed to grow β-SiC nanorods from a solid carbon and silicon source on a Si substrate by hot filament chemical vapor deposition. This process is catalyzed by metallic particles which come from impurities in the solid source which is a plate made by pressing a mixture graphite and silicon powders at 150 °C. Hydrogen was introduced into the reaction chamber to react with the solid plate to produce hydrocarbon and hydrosilicon radicals which presumably reacted to form SiC nanorods. The nanorods consisted of a crystalline β-SiC core with an amorphous silicon oxide shell layer and grew along the [100] direction. The nanorods were 10–30 nm in diameter and less than 1 μm in length. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Straight beta-silicon carbide nanorods have been grown on silicon wafers using hot filament chemical vapor deposition with iron particles as catalyst. A plate made of a C–Si–SiO2 powder mixture was used as carbon and silicon sources. Hydrogen, which was the only gas fed into the deposition system, acts both as a reactant and as a mass transporting medium. The diameter of the β-SiC nanorod ranged from 20 to 70 nm, while its length was approximately 1 μm. A growth mechanism of beta-silicon carbide nanorods was proposed. The field emission properties of the beta-silicon carbide nanorods grown on the silicon substrate are also reported. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: In Study A, the incidence of arterial oxygen desaturation was studied using pulse oximetry (Sao2) in 100 sedated and 100 nonsedated patients breathing room air who underwent diagnostic upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. Hypoxia (Sao2 92% or less of at least 15 s duration) occurred in 17% and 6% of sedated patients and nonsedated patients, respectively (p 〈 0.03). Mild desaturation (Sao2 94% or less and less than 15 s duration) occurred in 47% of sedated patients compared with 12% of nonsedated patients (p 〈 0.001). In Study B, the effects of supplementary oxygen therapy and the effects of different pre-oxygenation times on arterial oxygen saturation (Sao2) in sedated patients were studied using pulse oximetry. One hundred and twenty patients who underwent diagnostic upper gastrointestinal endoscopy with intravenous sedation were studied. Patients were randomly allocated to one of four groups: Group A (n = 30) received no supplementary oxygen while Groups B–D received supplementary oxygen at 4 l.min−1 via nasal cannulae. The pre-oxygenation time in Group B (n = 30) was zero minutes, Group C (n = 30) was 2 min and Group D (n = 30) was 5 min before sedation and introduction of the endoscope. Hypoxia occurred in seven of the 30 patients in Group A and none in groups B, C and D (p 〈 0.001). We conclude that desaturation and hypoxia is common in patients undergoing upper gastrointestinal endoscopy with and without sedation. Sedation significantly increases the incidence of desaturation and hypoxia. Supplementary nasal oxygen at 4 l.min−1 in sedated patients abolishes desaturation and hypoxia. Pre-oxygenation confers no additional benefit.

    Notes: The roles of glycogen synthase kinase-3β (GSK-3β) and tau phosphorylation were examined in seven-day-old rats injected with the NMDA receptor antagonist (MK801) that is known to induce neuronal apoptosis. Immunoblot and immunohistochemical analysis of brain samples demonstrated a site-specific increase in tau phosphorylation associated with the relocalization of the protein to the nuclear/perinuclear region of apoptotic neurons. In addition, a tau 32-kDa fragment was detected, suggesting that tau was a target of intracellular proteolysis in MK801-treated brains. The proteolytically modified form of tau has reduced ability to bind to microtubules. GSK-3β kinase assay and immunoblottings of active (tyrosine-216) and inactive (serine-9) forms of GSK-3β revealed a rapid and transient increase in the kinase activity. Lithium chloride, a GSK-3β inhibitor, prevented tau phosphorylation suggesting that tau phosphorylation is mediated by the activation of GSK-3β. Confocal microscopy using double labelling of tau and GSK--3β revealed that the activation of GSK-3β in neurons was associated with early (2 h) nuclear translocation of tyrosine-216 GSK-3β. The execution phase of neuronal apoptosis was accompanied by a selective phosphorylation of serine-9 and dephosphorylation of tyrosine-216 GSK-3β. These findings demonstrate that in vivo, GSK-3β kinase activation and nuclear translocation are early stress signals of neuronal apoptosis.

    Notes: Growth was assessed in rats fed diets of freeze-dried (FD) and liquid milk and yogurt. Microbial growth in liquid milk under feeding conditions lowered pH to 4.5 and caused coagulation; thus, accuracy of comparing liquid diets is questionable. Freeze-drying eliminated such problems but did not diminish the superior stimulation of growth in rats by yogurt. Weight gains of rats on yogurt were 24.3% higher then for milk when fed as liquid and 24.6% higher when fed FD. Feed efficiencies for yogurt diets were significantly higher than were efficiencies for milk diets. Lactase activity of FD yogurts declined less than 5% during 24 months storage at 10°C.

    Notes: Intra-abdominal spindle cell lesions: a review and practical aids to diagnosis Intra-abdominal spindle cell lesions are uncommon and often present a diagnostic challenge. An important group of such lesions are the gastrointestinal stromal tumours. Other intra-abdominal spindle cell lesions include fibromatosis, various sarcomas—in particular, leiomyosarcoma, liposarcoma, and malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumour—and, in women, endometrial stromal sarcoma. Less common lesions are inflammatory myofibroblastic tumours, the mesenteric spindle cell reactive lesions, retroperitoneal fibrosis, and solitary fibrous tumour. A variety of intra-abdominal tumours of nonmesenchymal origin may have a spindle cell/sarcomatoid morphology; these include sarcomatoid carcinoma, malignant melanoma and, in women, sarcomatoid granulosa cell tumour. Finally, metastatic sarcomas from pelvic or extra-abdominal organs need also be considered. A set of practical aids to the diagnosis of intra-abdominal spindle cell lesions is presented to assist pathologists dealing with such lesions, particularly with regards to the consideration of differential diagnoses.
