Notizen: Abstract A total of 279 men were asked about their purchase of erotic magazines, rental of videos and attendance at erotic movies. There were 131 sex offenders and 50 community controls from Alberta and 97 sex offenders from Ontario. In line with results from previous commissions on the subject, community volunteers reported greater exposure to erotica than sex offenders but there were no group differences in regular use of erotica. There were also no group differences in the types of erotica to which the respondents were exposed. The adult female was the main subject of materials to which most men had been exposed. An examination of age, education, intelligence, admission to the offense, and validity scales of the MMPI showed that the best predictor of erotica use was lower intelligence. Of the 15% of sex offenders against children who used erotic materials in their offence, conventional adult female erotica was used, usually to stimulate the child's curiosity. Theories of erotica use in sex offences and methods of study are reviewed.

Notizen: Abstract A number of MMPI derived scales were examined for their utility in the clinical assessment of sex offenders and for their ability to discriminate sex offenders from controls. The MMPIs from a total of 479 men were scored for scales measuring sexual behavior and deviance, substance abuse, personality, violence, suicide-proneness, defensiveness and brain damage. Each scale was examined for its internal consistency, using Cronbach's Alpha. Of the 125 scales examined, 70% had alphas greater than 0.60 and 80% discriminated sex offenders from controls at a better than chance level. Most scales were free of bias from age, education, IQ, and the MMPI L, F, and K Scales. The MMPI and its derived scales appear to be useful in screening of sex offenders and in evaluating their other problems which play a major role in their crimes.

Notizen: Abstract Brain area and optical density were computed for each hemisphere and for 4 sections within the hemispheres at the level of the temporal horns for 18 pedophiles, 12 incest offenders, 34 sexually aggressive offenders of adult females and 12 nonviolent nonsex offender controls. Brain length and width was also computed, using the pineal gland as reference. From the width measures, an index of brain symmetry was computed. Results showed that the brains of sex offenders were relatively smaller in the left hemisphere compared to controls, but there were no significant group differences in optical density. There were no subgroup differences in brain area but the segments corresponding to the left frontal and temporal areas were smaller in sex offenders than controls. There were no significant differences in brain length but sex offenders had smaller widths in both hemispheres than controls. Analysis of symmetry showed that 66.7% of pedophiles and 53.1% of sexual aggressives had asymmetric brains compared to 8.3% of incest offenders and 20.0% of controls. Pedophiles showed smaller left hemispheres than right whereas sexual aggressives were equally split between left and right asymmetry. These results support earlier findings of temporal horn dilatation in pedophiles and sexual aggressives.

Notizen: Abstract A total of 118 sex offenders were compared on two measures of violence-proneness (the Clarke Violence Scale or CVS and the Forensic Assessment of Violence or FAV) and the AECOM Coping Scales. The sex offenders were divided into 29 violent and 89 nonviolent cases, based on their criminal histories of sexual and assault offences. Both the CVS and FAV discriminated violent and nonviolent cases but improvements in the measures are needed. The AECOM Minimization, Mapping, and Reversal Coping Scales discriminated the two groups as well. The FAV results, especially, were influenced by test-taking response set. Distinctions between ‘self-perceptions of violence’ and ‘violent behavior’ are highlighted and discussed.

Notizen: Abstract Fifteen male exhibitionists were compared to 36 nonviolent, nonsex offender controls on CT brain scans, the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS-R), and the Halstead-Reitan Neuropsychological Test Battery (HR). The exhibitionists differed from controls only on HR subtests Tactual Performance Total Time, Trail Making Test A, and Aphasia Screening Test. Global differences between the two groups in structural brain damage and functional impairment were not found. Contrasting results of brain damage in exhibitionists and other sex offender groups are discussed.

Notizen: Abstract Endocrine functioning in sadists, nonsadistic sexual aggressives and criminal controls was examined in two studies. In Study 1 baseline values for 8 hormones and 2 indices of free testosterone were compared. There were no statistically significant group differences, although some cases showed abnormalities. In Study 2, the ACTH test was performed. The groups did not differ in the test results but sexual aggressives had significantly lower baseline values of DHEA-S than controls. The results could not be explained by group differences in alcohol or drug abuse. If the endocrine system plays a primary role in the etiology of sexually aggressive behavior, that role still remains to be characterized and clarified.

Notizen: Abstract A total of 157 sex offenders were administered the MMPI. They were subdivided into violent and nonviolent, substance abuser versus nonabuser, criminal history versus no criminal history, CT brain abnormalities versus no abnormalities and into more and less defensive groups. From the MMPI, 125 scales measuring sexual behavior, substance abuse, violence, personality, defensiveness, and brain damage were examined for reliability, factor structure and discriminant validity. Results showed that most scales were internally consistent. Discriminant validity was modest in most cases but results suggest that many scales examined would be useful aids in screening and profiling sex offenders.

Notizen: Abstract Sixteen male genital exhibitionists were compared to nonviolent nonsex offender controls with respect to 9 serum hormones: cortisol, prolactin, dehydroepiandrosterone, estradiol, luteinizing hormone, follicle stimulating hormone, androstenedione, testosterone, sex hormone binding globulin, and two indices of free testosterone. There were group differences in estradiol, total testosterone and percent free testosterone. Exhibitionists had lower estradiol and testosterone but higher overall free testosterone. The results were unrelated to substance abuse, age, or education. Sex hormone abnormalities in exhibitionists and in other sex offender groups are discussed.
