Notes: Properties of transverse electric waves in the microwave frequency range on a plane interface between a nonlinear antiferromagnet and a linear ferromagnet are investigated. It is revealed that there are two different field distributions and powers. An exact analytical dispersion relation is obtained. On the basis of the dispersion relation, we have investigated the properties of surface waves in this waveguide and, theoretically, found that there exist passbands and stop bands, which can be controlled by varying the power in the nonlinear gyromagnetic waveguides. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In this article the nonlinear frequency characteristics of the transverse magnetic surface waves at microwave frequencies on the interface between a ferromagnet and an antiferromagnet have been studied. The results show that the magnetic surface waves have passband(s) and stopband(s), which are interchangeable through the variation of the wave power. It is shown that the nonlinear surface waves excited on the interface can be backward surface waves with group velocities opposite to their phase velocities in direction. The passband widths of the forward surface waves are about five times larger than those of the backward surface waves in the situation. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract In situations where the experimental or sampling units in a study can be easily ranked than quantified, McIntyre (1952,Aust. J. Agric. Res.,3, 385–390) proposed that the mean ofn units based on aranked set sample (RSS) be used to estimate the population mean, and observed that it provides an unbiased estimator with a smaller variance compared to a simple random sample (SRS) of the same sizen. McIntyre's concept ofRSS is essentially nonparametric in nature in that the underlying population distribution is assumed to be completely unknown. In this paper we further explore the concept ofRSS when the population is partially known and the parameter of interest is not necessarily the mean. To be specific, we address the problem of estimation of the parameters of a two-parameter exponential distribution. It turns out that the use ofRSS and its suitable modifications results in much improved estimators compared to the use of aSRS.

Notes: Abstract The author proposes to add another dichotomy to the list of essential tensions proposed by Professor Duda, namely beauty and ugliness. Physicists believe that only beautiful theories describe the world correctly, and that General Relativity is one of the most beautiful physical theories. The author explains why physicists regard this theory as beautiful.

Notes: PPO was a better intensifier and charred material for High-impact polystyrene (HIPS), itcould make HIPS achieve UL94V-0 with APP, MC, RDP. Especially, RDP not only improved theflame-retarded property but also controlled the hole producing, and had the best consistent withmatrix which could improve the mechanical properties. SBS and SEBS were better consistent withmatrix, especially SEBS was tiny granule, which could be dispersed in matrix easily. The propertiesof SEBS toughened the non-halogen flame-retarded HIPS was followed: tensile strength: 18.83MPa;izod notch impact strength: 15.7kJ/m2; UL94V-0

Notes: This paper discusses the sulfate resistance and frost of mass hydraulic concrete which containing fly ash, superplasticizer and a novel MgO-bearing expansive agent (HNM), at same time, the mechanisms and processes of sulfate attack on it have been proposed. Results showed that using a water/binder ratio of 0.48 in RCC containing 50 % fly ash and 8 % HNM a durability factor of over D300 can be achieved and sulfate resistance may be improved slightly

Notes: Abstract Monthly mean sea surface temperature (SST), free air temperature from satellite microwave sounding units (MSU) and oceanic surface energy fluxes are subjected to empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis for a common decade to investigate the physical relationships involved. The first seasonal modes of surface solar energy flux and SST show similar inter-hemispheric patterns with an annual cycle. Solar flux appears to control this pattern of SST. The first seasonal mode of MSU is similar with, additionally, land-sea differences; MSU is apparently partly controlled by absorption of solar near-infrared radiation and partly by sensible heat from the land surface. The second and third seasonal eigenvector of SST and solar flux exhibit semi-annual oscillations associated with a pattern of cloudiness in the subtropics accompanying the translation of the Hadley cell rising motion between the hemispheres. The second seasonal mode of MSU is dominated by an El Niño signal. The first nonseasonal EOFs of SST and solar flux exhibit El Niño characteristics with the solar pattern being governed by west-to-east translation of a Walker cell type pattern. The first non-seasonal EOF of MSU shows a tropical strip pattern for the El Niño mode, which is well correlated with the latent heat fluxes in the tropical east Pacific but not in the tropical west Pacific. Two possible explanations are: an increase in subsidence throughout the tropical strip driven by extra evaporation in the tropical east Pacific and consequent additional latent heat liberation; a decrease of meridional heat flux out of the tropics.

Notes: Abstract Lung injury induced by phospholipase A2 (PLA2, 0.046 IU/ml perfusate) was studied in a continuous weighing system of isolated perfused guinea pig lungs. The results revealed that lung weight increased progressively during the 30-min perfusion of PLA2. No change of pulmonary arterial pressure was observed in the same period. Albumin permeability-surface area product, lung index, lung water content, exudate from pleura, and angiotensin-converting-enzyme activity increased significantly at the end of 30 min PLA2 perfusion.p-Bromophenacyl bromide, a PLA2 inhibitor, may block the above changes nearly completely. The effects of inhibitors of cyclooxygenase (indomethacin, IM), lipoxygenase (diethylcarbamaxine, DE), and platelet-activating factor (SRI 63-441) on PLA2-induced lung injury were also studied. We found: (1) PLA2 may induce high permeability lung edema. The role of endothelial injury in the permeability change remains to be further investigated. (2) DE ameliorated lung injury significantly within 10 min of PLA2 treatment but showed no effect after 15 min. IM ameliorated lung injury during the whole experimental period. SRI 63-441 had no effect. It is suggested that PLA2 may damage lung by inducing products of cyclooxy genase and lipoxygenase besides its direct effect.

Notes: Abstract The kinematics and dynamics of self-similar cosmological models are discussed. The degrees of freedom of the solutions of Einstein's equations for different types of models are listed. The relation between kinematic quantities and the classifications of the self-similarity group is examined. All dust local rotational symmetry models have been found.
