    Notes: A general two-dimensional model to describe beam fanning, which takes into consideration the finite width of the input beam and the interaction between different directions of the fanning beam, is presented. By numerical calculation of the coupled equations, the well-known curved path of a propagating beam inside photorefractive crystals is explained, and the propagation properties of the fanning beam inside the crystals are studied and discussed.

    Notes: A model to describe fanning effects in photorefractive crystals is presented. The intensity distribution of the fanning beam for one incident beam and two incident beams in 45°-cut BaTiO3 crystals has been studied theoretically and experimentally, with good agreement. The theoretical results suggest that, when there is a fanning effect, only at intermediate effective interaction lengths does the signal beam have a high gain in two-wave mixing. The transient behavior of the fanning beam in a 45°-cut BaTiO3 crystal has also been studied theoretically and experimentally.

    Notes: A two-dimensional model for the self-pumped phase conjugation in a photorefractive crystal is presented. In the model, no internal reflections at a corner of the crystal are explicitly considered, aside from some low intensity scattered radiation at the crystal surfaces. The numerical simulations of the curved beam path inside the crystal show agreement with experimental observations. The numerical results of high-reflectivity and high-fidelity phase conjugation are consistent with experimental results. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A modified centrifuge has been developed. There are four advantages to this apparatus: (i) The presence of centrifugal acceleration permits the formation of the boundary between the two phases of a fluid system more quickly after phase separation, especially for viscous fluids such as polymer blends. (ii) The rotor is able to accommodate three samples. (iii) The formation of homogeneous solutions in the one phase region can be achieved within the constant temperature rotor which can be controlled to ±0.003 °C up to ≈300 °C. (iv) The phase separation temperature can be measured as a function of centrifugal acceleration up to 1500 gravity. By using the centrifugal apparatus, the coexistence curves of polystyrene in methylcyclohexane were measured. The results in terms of critical exponents and preexponential factors were in excellent agreement with the best literature values and thus confirmed the reliability of our apparatus.

The long-term changes (1956–1998) in density and species composition of planktonic rotifers were studied at two sampling stations (I, II) of Lake Donghu, a shallow eutrophic Chinese Lake densely stocked with filter-feeding fishes. Annual average densities of rotifers increased with an increase in fish yield and eutrophication, whilst species number decreased from 82 in 1962–1963 to 62 in 1994–1998.2. During 1962–98, some species such as Anuraeopsis fissa, Polyarthra spp. (including P. dolichoptera & P. vulgaris), Trichocerca pusilla and Synchaeta oblonga increased their percentage in abundance remarkably, whilst the proportion of Keratella cochlearis decreased at two relatively eutrophic stations from 19 to 4.2% at Station I and from 30 to 3.2% at Station II.3. The high rmax of A. fissa probably made it more successful than other rotifers under high predation pressure by planktivorous fish. The decrease in the K. cochlearis population might be attributed partly to predation by Cyclops vicinus.4. Small rotifers were less vulnerable to fish predation than large-sized cladocerans. Decreases in cladocerans coincided with increases in rotifers, suggesting that the indirect effect of fish predation on cladocerans might have partly contributed to the population development of rotifers in Lake Donghu during recent decades.5. We also conducted surveys (1994–1998) of seasonal dynamics of rotifers at four sampling stations (I–IV) which have varied in trophic status after fragmentation of the lake in the 1960s. A total of 75 species were identified at the four stations. Both densities and biomass of rotifers were considerably higher in the two more eutrophic stations than in the two less eutrophic stations. This indicates that the population increase of rotifers at Stations I and II during recent decades might be partly attributed to eutrophication of the lake water.

    Notes: 1. Many clinical studies have suggested a relationship between oestrogen and insulin sensitivity. In the present study, HepG2 cells were divided into four groups: (i) control, incubated with 1 nmol/L insulin; (ii) the HI group, which was incubated with 100 nmol/L insulin to induce insulin resistance; (iii) the E2 group, in which control cells were incubated with 1 nmol/L insulin plus 1 nmol/L oestradiol; and (iv) the HI + E2 group, in which insulin-resistant cells were incubated with 100 nmol/L insulin + 1 nmol/L oestradiol.2. A high concentration of insulin decreased the activity of phosphofructo-1-kinase (PFK), pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH) and glycogen synthase (GS), as well as decreasing the expression of insulin receptor (IR) and insulin receptor substrate-2 (IRS-2). High insulin had no effect on glucose transport or the expression of insulin receptor-1 (IRS-1).3. The addition of oestradiol to control cells increased glucose transport, the activity of PFK, PDH and GS and the expression of IRS-1 and IRS-2, but had no effect on the expression of IR.4. Treatment of insulin-resistant HepG2 cells with oestradiol attenuated HI-induced decreases, except for IR, and the expression of IRS-1 was significantly higher than control, attaining levels seen in group 3. The expression of IRS-2 was significant higher than in insulin-resistant cells, but did not reach control levels. Changes in the activity of PFK, PDH and GS were the same as the changes seen in the expression of IRS-2.5. These results suggest that high concentrations of insulin induce insulin resistance in HepG2 cells, whereas oestradiol improves glucose metabolism and insulin signal transduction of cells by enhancing the activity of key enzymes involved in glucose metabolism and the expression of IRS-1 and IRS-2.
