    Notes: This paper presents closed form equations based on a modification of those originally derived by Paros and Weisbord in 1965, for the mechanical compliance of a simple monolithic flexure hinge of elliptic cross section, the geometry of which is determined by the ratio ε of the major and minor axes. It is shown that these equations converge at ε=1 to the Paros and Weisbord equations for a hinge of circular section and at ε ⇒∞ to the equations predicted from simple beam bending theory for the compliance of a cantilever beam. These equations are then assessed by comparison with results from finite element analysis over a range of geometries typical of many hinge designs. Based on the finite element analysis, stress concentration factors for the elliptical hinge are also presented. As a further verification of these equations, a number of elliptical hinges were manufactured on a CNC milling machine. Experimental data were produced by applying a bending moment using dead weight loading and measuring subsequent angular deflections with a laser interferometer. In general, it was found that predictions for the compliance of elliptical hinges are likely to be within 12% for a range of geometries with the ratio βx (=t/2ax) between 0.06 and 0.2 and for values of ε between 1 and 10. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: In this article, the isomerization reaction of n-butane is used to study the dynamic properties of n-butane in aqueous solution. It is assumed that the dihedral angle of n-butane obeys the generalized Langevin equation (GLE), in which an effective potential, a friction damping and a random torque are included. The random torque is calculated using constrained molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and the time-dependent friction kernel is determined by using the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. The results show that for the trans, gauche, and transition states of n-butane, the random torques approximately follow a Gaussian distribution. The friction kernels demonstrate a rapid initial decay and a slow sequential decay, while the half-widths of the Gaussian distributions and the initial values of the friction kernels are somewhat dependent on the conformations. The transmission coefficient for crossing the transition state is also analyzed within the framework of Kramers and Grote–Hynes theories. The result shows that the isomerization of n-butane in water is in the polarization caging regime. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract More than half of Americans with insurance coverage for mental health services are enrolled in plans that carve out behavioral health care services with a vendor specializing in the management of these services. However, utilization management has not taken the place of benefit limitations. Do benefit limits matter? This article reports the percentage of enrollees in managed behavioral health care carve-out plans that encounter benefit limits. Estimates are provided on the impact and savings of imposing benefit limits on enrollees in unrestricted plans. Costs to eliminate benefit limits are estimated to be very small. This study finds that benefit limits do matter but only to a very small number of plan enrollees. Furthermore, the results of this study show that for inpatient limits, children are especially vulnerable. These issues have important implications for discussions about the impact of managed care in mental health and for discussions concerning parity legislation.

    Notes: Abstract We report for the first time a laser microfabrication and its characteristics of photonic crystal structure in vitreous silica. It is two-dimensional triangle lattices composed of hollow cylinders with a periodicity of approximately 1.2 μm. Infrared spectroscopic measurements revealed dielectric-periodicity-matched transmission valleys centering approximately at 4100 cm−1 for H-polarization and 4000 cm−1 for Epolarization, respectively.

    Notes: The residual stress distribution of microstructure about Cu-Fe-P alloy for leadframe is simulated by finite element method of elastic-plastics deformation. The effect of thedensity of Fe particle on residual stress is mainly analyzed. It is indicated that the larger thedensity of particle is, the larger residual stress in particle and matrix near the interface is, andthe larger stress difference between both the sides is. When the density of Fe particle is 35%and the compressive extent of cold rolling is 25%, in the X-direction, the stress variation ofthe Cu matrix is from compressive 900MPa to tensile 1480MPa, and stress of the Fe particleis about compressive 246MPa. The maximum residual stress gradient near the interfacebetween Cu matrix and Fe particle reaches 1726MPa. The bigger stress concentration andresidual stress will destroy the quality of the material. Even peelings on the surface occur. Sothe appearance of bigger Fe particle goes against the quality of the material, and it should beavoided as far as possible in the production of Cu-Fe-P alloy for lead frame

    Notes: Abstract. Forty-four sequences of ornithine carbamoyltransferases (OTCases) and 33 sequences of aspartate carbamoyltransferases (ATCases) representing the three domains of life were multiply aligned and a phylogenetic tree was inferred from this multiple alignment. The global topology of the composite rooted tree (each enzyme family being used as an outgroup to root the other one) suggests that present-day genes are derived from paralogous ancestral genes which were already of the same size and argues against a mechanism of fusion of independent modules. A closer observation of the detailed topology shows that this tree could not be used to assess the actual order of organismal descent. Indeed, this tree displays a complex topology for many prokaryotic sequences, with polyphyly for Bacteria in both enzyme trees and for the Archaea in the OTCase tree. Moreover, representatives of the two prokaryotic Domains are found to be interspersed in various combinations in both enzyme trees. This complexity may be explained by assuming the occurrence of two subfamilies in the OTCase tree (OTC α and OTC β) and two other ones in the ATCase tree (ATC I and ATC II). These subfamilies could have arisen from duplication and selective losses of some differentiated copies during the successive speciations. We suggest that Archaea and Eukaryotes share a common ancestor in which the ancestral copies giving the present-day ATC II/OTC β combinations were present, whereas Bacteria comprise two classes: one containing the ATC II/OTC α combination and the other harboring the ATC I/OTC β combination. Moreover, multiple horizontal gene transfers could have occurred rather recently amongst prokaryotes. Whichever the actual history of carbamoyltransferases, our data suggest that the last common ancestor to all extant life possessed differentiated copies of genes coding for both carbamoyltransferases, indicating it as a rather sophisticated organism.
