    Notes: Integrated fieldwork and modelling has been undertaken to assess the vulnerability of riverside wells to pollution when river water is contaminated. Results highlight the importance of streambed sediments as a barrier to groundwater pollution by river water. The bed of the River Thames is lined with brown and grey organic-rich silts of low hydraulic conductivity (about 0.002 m/d). A 3-D model for solute transport in stream-aquifer systems was developed and applied to two riverside sites in the middle Thames valley. Model results indicate that well-water quality would only breach EC limits if the river was heavily polluted for a week or even a month (clearly an unlikely scenario). Sensitivity analyses showed the models to be far more sensitive to streambed parameters than to aquifer parameters. Thus it would be more sensible to focus fieldwork on the measurement of streambed properties than on the more usually measured aquifer parameters.

    Notes: Acidic spoil-heap drainage, containing elevated concentrations of iron, aluminium and manganese, has been polluting the Stanley Burn in County Durham for nearly two decades. Following the success of a pilot-scale wetland (the first application of its kind in Europe), a full-scale wetland was installed. Waste manures and composts have been used as the main substrate which is contained within embankments constructed from compacted pulverized fuel ash. The constructed wetland, which cost less than £20000 to build, has consistently reduced iron and aluminium concentrations and has markedly lowered the acidity of the drainage. A third phase of activities at the site aims to identify and eliminate pollutant-release ‘hot spots’ within the spoil.

    Notes: Deep mining activity has totally ceased in the Durham coalfield, and withdrawal of the regional dewatering scheme is being contemplated. Consequent groundwater rebound is expected to have severe and expensive environmental consequences, which could only be entirely avoided through indefinite pumping. However, continued pumping is expensive, at about $1 million/annum. The options of either abandoning or continuing pumping have differing time streams of future costs and, consequently, direct comparison of the expenditures involved is difficult. Both options are therefore analysed using economic evaluation criteria in order to determine the lowest cost alternative for the future. The overall outcome of the economic analysis, using both net present value and equivalent annual cost criteria, demonstrates that the option of continued pumping is less expensive than the option of abandoning pumping in all cases.

    Notes: In County Durham the forthcoming closure of two coastal collieries is, in effect, the final closure of a large hydraulically interconnected coalfield which has been progressively dewatered over three centuries. Groundwater will gradually rise through the previously worked strata after the cessation of coalfield dewatering. Past experience shows that the rising groundwater will develop high acidity and heavy metal loadings as oxidized pyrite remnants are dissolved. Conceptual modelling suggests that this acidic groundwater will ultimately discharge into the River Wear and its tributaries, with serious consequences for the aquatic ecology and human use of the River Wear system. Further environmental impacts may include (a) groundwater pollution in the adjacent Basal Permian Sands aquifer, (b) leaching from landfills intersected by the rising water table, (c) compromised integrity of foundations, (d) increased flows in old sewers below the new rest water level (leading to problems at sewagetreatment works and combined sewer overflows), (e) corrosion of other buried services, (f) surface gas emissions, and (g) long-term subsidence risk from old workings. The prevention of these impacts would involve long-term maintenance of regional dewatering, although local mitigation of most effects could be arranged – albeit at considerable cost. Current legislation fails to place responsibility for the prevention of such environmental impacts in the hands of any one organization; this ‘vacuum of responsibility’needs to be addressed urgently if a pragmatic, consensual approach to environmental protection in abandoned coalfields is to be pursued.

    Notes: Passive treatment of net-acidic minewaters using compost wetlands was pioneered in the USA but, so far, has had limited application in Europe. At Quaking Houses (County Durham), strongly acidic ferruginous and aluminium-rich waters discharging from the spoil heap of the abandoned Morrison Busty colliery have been obliterating aquatic life in the Stanley Burn for almost a decade. A concerted investigation involving the National Rivers Authority, the local community and a nearby University, has established the origins of the polluting discharge and assessed its impact on the receiving water. An evaluation was carried out on the possible treatment methods for the discharge, drawing upon the literature and supported by laboratory microcosm tests. A compost wetland was the favoured option, and a pilot facility was constructed with the assistance of the local community.Plans for full-scale treatment are now well advanced, with long-term maintenance being undertaken by local volunteers at minimal cost.
