    Notes: Transparent and conductive doped GaN thin films have been prepared on glass substrates by the metalorganic chemical vapor deposition method utilizing electron cyclotron resonance plasma. Highly transparent oxygen-, silicon-, and titanium-doped GaN thin films with resistivities of 1.8×10−2, 3.8×10−2, and 8.7×10−3 Ω cm, respectively, were prepared at 350 °C using triethylgallium and ammonia (NH3) as source gases. Carrier concentrations above 2×1020 cm−3 were obtained for all three types of GaN thin films doped with each impurity. These GaN thin films exhibited excellent thermal and chemical stability in various gas environments up to 350 °C and chemical stability in either acid or basic solutions depending on the dopant used.

    Notes: A new technique to measure gas–liquid densities using the one-dimensional projection method is presented. The measurements were made in an NMR autoclave under high-temperature and high-pressure conditions. J Oral Pathol Med 1998; 27: 43–7. © Munksgaard, 1998.Difficulties are often encountered in the diagnosis of malignant lymphoma of the oral and nasal cavities by histology and immunohistochemistry because these malignancies may be complicated by inflammation and necrosis. In the present study, immunoglobulin heavy chain (IgH) and T-cell receptor (TCR) gene rearrangements were examined by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded specimens obtained from 18 patients; the advantages of this method were evaluated. Twelve of these patients were diagnosed as having malignant lymphoma and six had tumors highly suggestive of malignant lymphoma. Fourteen (78%) of the 18 cases were diagnosed as malignant lymphoma histologically and immunohistochemically. Sixteen (89%) of the 18 cases were shown to be monoclonal by PCR. The four cases that could not be histologically or immunohistochemically diagnosed as malignant lymphoma showed monoclonal gene rearrangement by PCR. As a result, six patients suspected of having a malignant lymphoma were diagnosed as having one. The diagnosis of malignant lymphoma by PCR alone still has various problems. However, when the results of PCR are evaluated together with histopathological and immunohisto-chemical results, PCR makes a useful contribution to the diagnosis of malignant lymphomas of the nasal and oral cavities.

To obtain information about changes of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) in the brain in chronic hypertension, we immunohistochemically studied the distribution and level of bFGF and its receptor in the brain of stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRSP).2. In the control normotensive rats, immunoreactivity for bFGF was demonstrated in nerve cells, while there was almost no reactivity in astrocytes.3. In SHRSP, there was a marked immunoreactivity in the densely accumulated reactive cells, particularly astrocytes, in and around cerebral cortical lesions. Slightly increased reaction for bFGF was found in the nerve cells around lesions. Astrocytes in the subcortical white matter on both ipsi- and contra-lateral sides of the cortical lesion also showed immunoreactivity for bFGF. The location of increased bFGF expression in SHRSP corresponded very well with the site of extravasated plasma fluid demonstrated by anti-fibrinogen antibody. Electron microscopically, bFGF was shown in astrocytes along the rough endoplasmic reticulum suggesting the growth factor to be produced in the cells and not to be taken up from the surroundings. Expression of FGF-receptor was also demonstrated in reactive astrocytes in the oedematous cortical portion around lesion and in the oedematous subcortical white matter.4. These findings indicate the possibility that oedema and the simultaneously generated free radicals or some extravasated plasma components express bFGF in astrocytes and probably in nerve cells as well as FGF-receptor in astrocytes, and that the thus expressed bFGF and its receptor play some role in the sequence of developmental events of hypertensive cerebral lesions.

    Notes: An X-ray microprobe system for X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis and spectroscopy has been developed at SPring-8 BL39XU; it comprises an X-ray focusing or collimation system, energy-dispersive (ED) and wavelength-dispersive (WD) XRF spectrometers, and a sample-scanning system. The conventional ED spectrometer will be utilized for qualitative and quantitative trace-element analysis, and the WD spectrometer will be used both for trace-element analysis and XRF spectroscopy. A combination of monochromated undulator radiation and the WD spectrometer will enable resonant XRF spectroscopy using brilliant hard X-ray undulator radiation.

    Notes: Abstract To investigate the role of tyrosine kinase underlying glial cell proliferation after axotomy, the localization of phosphotyrosine was studied immunohistochemically in the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus nerve and the hypoglossal nucleus after nerve transection in adult rats. An anti-phosphotyrosine antibody weakly stained the cytoplasm of the neurons and some glial cells on the control side of both nuclei, while preferentially staining the plasma membrane of perineuronal microglial cells and neurons weakly on the severed side 2 days after axotomy and intensely between 3 and 7 days. Some of the microglial cells reacted positively with both anti-bromodeoxyuridine and antiphosphotyrosine antibodies, suggesting that tyrosine kinase is involved in microglial cell proliferation. Proliferation of numerous microglial cells was observed in the severed nuclei between 2 and 4 days after axotomy, while only a few were detected on days 5 and 7. These findings suggest that tyrosine kinase is involved in not only the proliferation of perineuronal microglial cells but also in some retrograde neuronal reactions such as differentiation and regeneration.

Slightly increased reaction for bFGF was found in the nerve cells around lesions.     Notes: Abstract Although most peripheral neurons show regenerative changes after axotomy, neurons of some nuclei show degenerative changes. To study the mechanisms responsible for such differences in neuronal reactions after axotomy, we investigated the changes of pp60c-src and phosphotyrosine (pTyr) in the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus nerve and the hypoglossal nucleus after transection of each nerve in adult rats using immunohistochemistry. Polyclonal antibody against pp60v-src stained the cytoplasm of neurons homogeneously in both the severed and non-severed sides of the vagal and hypoglossal nuclei from days 1 to 56 after axotomy. On the other hand, the monoclonal antibody against pp60v-src (mAb327, which recognizes src homology 3 region in pp60src as an epitope) showed different immunoreactivities. No pp60c-src immunoreactivity was observed in neurons in either the vagal and hypoglossal nuclei of the non-severed side between days 1 and 56, whereas in the severed side of the hypoglossal nucleus intense pp60c-src immunoreactivity was observed along the plasma membrane of neurons from days 5 to 28 after axotomy. In contrast, in the severed side of the vagal nucleus pp60c-src immunoreactivity appeared along the plasma membrane of neurons on day 5 and remained until day 7. Conformational changes accompanying the activation of pp60c-src are suggested to cause differences in immunoreactivities of these antibodies. The expression (or activation) of pp60c-src in the neurons was stronger and longer lasting in the hypoglossal nucleus, which regenerates successfully after axotomy, than in the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus nerve, which undergoes necrobiotic reaction. These results indicate that pp60c-src plays an important role in regeneration after axotomy.
