    Notizen: 3-Dodecylthiophene (1a) and 3-methylthiophene (1b) were copolymerized electrochemically. The visible and IR spectra of the neutral copolymers prove the copolymers to be of random structure, which can be denoted as that of poly(3-alkyl-2,5-thienylene)s. 1b polymerizes with preference over 1a. With increasing fraction of monomeric units of 1b in the copolymers, the conductivity increases and the solubility of the neutral copolymers decreases. The copolymer containing 58 mol-% monomeric units of 1b has a high conductivity of 220 S/cm and a good solubility of 75 wt.-% in chloroform. 1H NMR spectra of poly(3-dodecylthienylene) and copolymers show two chemical shifts for the α(1)-methylene protons of the monomeric units of 1a as well as of the methyl protons of the monomeric units of 1b. This fact may be explained by the presence of head-to-head and other constitutions.

    Notizen: An artificial oscillating system consisting of water-swollen polyelectrolyte gels, to which a constant electric potential was applied, is described. It was found that repetitive oscillations occurred in three-dimensional crosslinked gels made of synthetic polyelectrolytes, proteins and of polysaccharides. The repetitive oscillations were rather stable regardless of the “stimulating” current density, and the frequency was of the order 0,01 to 0,2 Hz which gradually decreased with time. Power spectra and Lorentz plots were obtained and a semi-quantitative analysis of the oscillation was carried out.

    Notizen: Various supports and bio-reactors have been proposed. Packed bed reactors with polymer material in granular shape are most often employed in both laboratory and industry. But they have a disadvantage related to an increase in pressure drop. We already developed filter paper composed of short cut pieces of superfine filaments (SFF). It shows high performance, but its hydrodynamic resistance increases when substrate solution passes through it. A new type of enzyme reactor equipped with knitted SFF has been proposed. In this reactor, substrate does not pass through the support but flows along the thin channel and parallel to the support. Therefore, it is able to maintain flow rate constant during a considerable period. The productivity of the reactor fairly increases by reducing the thickness of the channel because linear velocity increases with the reduction of the thickness and that contributes to the decrease in mass transfer resistance.

    Notizen: The effective diffusivity of oxygen, De, in Ca-alginate and PVA-SbQ gels was measured using a two-chamber vessel with a membrane between the two chambers. The effect of cell density, Cc, on De in Ca-alginate gels was studied. The effective diffusivity of oxygen decreased with increasing cell density, to Cc = 170 kg dry cells/m3 gel. The dependency of De on cell density was discussed in terms of a random-pore model. The model correlated well with experimental data, i.e., kDe/D0 = 0.86(1 - 1.47 × 10-3 Cc)2. Here, k is the partition coefficient, and D0 is diffusivity in water.

    Notizen: A poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) fiber support incorporating various aminoacetal functional groups has been developed for immobilizing enzymes. The aminated PVA fiber seems to adsorb enzymes with electrostatic force of attraction; thus the immobilization procedure is simple. By the use of this fiber having immobilized enzymes, the reaction between enzymes and substrates is nearly independent of the size of subtstrates. This newly developed type of fiber, which is formed by a mass superfine fibers (SFF), each measuring 1 μm or less in diameter, permits much more increased surface area than the conventional enzyme immobilization supports. Our studies of the properties of the fiber for immobilization of enzymes show the following results: (1) SFF has a greater ability for the immobilization of invertase than ordinary fibers; (2) dimethyl-aminated SFF has the best performance for the immobilization of invertase. From these results, it is concluded that the dimethyl-aminated SFF is an excellent support for the immobilization of invertase.
