Notes: Sixty squamous cell carcinomas of tongue and buccal mucosa were examined for expression of p53 protein by using an immunohistochemical technique improved by an antigen retrieval method. Twenty-seven (45%) tumors demonstrated strongly positive staining. Thirteen of p53-positive tumors (48%) also exhibited Overexpression of p53 in immediately adjoining hyperplastic or pre-malignant epithelium. All 22 metastatic lymph nodes and 18 local recurrent lesions (except two) had an identical p53 immunophenotype to their corresponding primary sites. Mitotic indices were significantly higher in p53-positive tumors (P 〈 0.01): however, no association of PCNA scores with p53 expression was found (P 〉 0.1). There was no correlation between p53 Overexpression and tumor grade, size and staging, vascular invasion, lymph node metastasis, and early local recurrence. Overexpression of p53 was found to be relatively higher, although not statistically significant, in nonsmokers than in heavy smokers (66.7% vs. 42.9%). and in non-betel-quid chewers than in heavy chewers (62.5% vs. 34.2%). These data are consistent with the hypothesis that inactivation of p53 protein may occur in the early phases of oral tumorigenesis. It may not be a useful prognostic marker but could possibly be used for risk assessment and surveillance of local recurrence.

Notes: Immunohistochemical detection of bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) in calcifying fibrous epulis was performed to elucidate the biological process of ossification and cemento-ossification. In a total 25 cases, 15 (60%) showed positive BMP staining in bone forming areas. Histopathological features of developing hard tissues were varied, consisting of structures such as woven bone and cemento-osseous formations. BMP immunostaining was limited to osteoblasts and fibrous connective tissue surrounding the bone matrix. BMP was concentrated in the periodontal fibres and in dense fibrous structures in the cemento-osseous masses. On the basis of histopathological and immunohistochemical features, the histogenesis of ossifying and cemento-ossifying processes appear to be of two possible origins; the excessive proliferation of periodontal ligament and a meta-plastic process occurring in the connective tissue fibres (non-periodontal in origin), with the former being more common.

Notes: Abstract Bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) is a potent induction factor for new bone formation including heterotopic chondro-ossification in soft tissues. The immunohistochemical reaction for BMP was studied in 23 cases of pleomorphic adenoma of salivary gland by using a monoclonal antibody produced by hybridoma technique. Positive BMP immunoreactivity was seen in 87% of tumours. Immunohistochemical expression of BMP was observed in modified myoepithelial cells (88% cases), luminal tumour cells of tubulo-ductal structures (78% cases) and chondroid cells in hyaline tissue (22% cases). The authors concluded that the simultaneous presence of glycosaminoglycans as matrix substance and S-100 protein for calcium signalling are associated with BMP-mediated cellular activity of modified myoepithelial cells in the formation of chondroid structures in pleomorphic adenomas of the salivary glands.

Notes: The meshless methods effectively deal with large material distortion simulation. Based on therigid (visco)plastic material model, the element-free Galerkin method (EFGM) is introduced to simulate themetal forming processes. Aiming at the volume locking and pressure oscillation during EFGM analysis, avolumetric strain rate mapping method is proposed based on pressure projection method. The releasingalgorithm is established by modifying the volumetric strain rate in the functional equation. The volumetricstrain rate calculated according to velocity field is mapped onto a lower-order space to reduce the number ofindependent discrete constrain equations. The numerical example shows that the releasing algorithm caneffectively eliminate the volumetric locking and pressure oscillation without the expense of employing largesupport size in the rigid-plastic meshless method

Notes: There are many factors, such as the laser and geometrical parameters, which influencegreatly on the laser bending process. So it is of great importance to determine these variablesproperly. Considering the relationship of material properties and temperature, a 3-Dthermal-mechanical finite element analysis model for laser micro-bending of stainless steel foil isdeveloped based on the software MSC.Marc, and the laser micro-bending process of 0.1mm thickstainless steel foil is implemented. The finite element method simulation process is integrated withthe optimization software package iSIGHT through secondary development. The objective functionis to realize the maximum bending angle after single laser scan, and laser power, beam diameter andscanning velocity are regarded as the design variables. The forming process is optimized by usinggenetic algorithm. The optimal result shows the bending angle can be got to the maximum1.0332°when the laser power, beam diameter and scanning velocity are 32W, 0.17mm and132mm/s respectively. The experiment results are in good agreement with optimal results

Notes: Abstract The microstructure of SiCp-reinforced A356 cast Al metal-matrix composite (MMC) has been investigated by means of transmission electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis. It is found that the MMC contains β-SiC, (β + γ2) SiC composite, eutectic Si, GP zones of Si sequence, a new J phase and the amorphous phase Al x Si9Ca2. The γ2-SiC is lathlike with a triclinic crystal structure having a=0.308 nm, b=0.305 nm, c=1.262 nm, α= 93.8 °, β = 90.0 °, and γ = 60.0 °. The J phase is bulk-like with a C-face-centred orthorhombic crystal structure having a = 0.680 nm, b = 1.170 nm and c = 0.826 nm.

Notes: Abstract The microstructure of 7050 aluminium alloy in the T74 condition has been investigated by transmission electron microscopy. It was found that the alloy contains the superlattice Al3Zr phase, η′ phase and Al7Cu2Fe constituent phase. The η′ phase is proposed to have an orthorhombic crystal structure witha=0.492 nm,b=0.852 nm andc=0.701 nm. The orientation relationship between the matrix and η′ phase is [11−2]m//[100]η′; [1−]m//[010]η′;[−1−1−1]m//[001]η′. The phases on the small-angle grain boundary are found to be mainly η′ phase and Cu/Si-rich phase, whereas on the large-angle grain boundary there is only η phase.
