Notes: The dichroism of the laser-induced periodic microstructure on a polyimide surface was studied with polarized reflectance infrared spectroscopy. The experimental results show that the polar C(Double Bond)O groups in the polyimide exhibit a greater tendency of orienting in the direction parallel to the microlines while the nonpolar C–C–C linkages between the two benzene rings in the diamine moiety tend to orient in a direction perpendicular to the nanolines. This result indicates that the polyimide molecule chains tend to orient in a direction perpendicular to the nanolines. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The nano-size silver particles were prepared in polymer-protecting colloidal dispersion withsilver nitride as the raw material, hydrazine hydrate as the reduction reagent and polyvinyl pirrolidone(PVP) as the protective solvent. The optimal conditions for the preparation process were studiedexperimentally as well. The influences from main factors, such as Ag+ concentration and ratio ofhydrazine/AgNO3, on the particle size, appearance shape, particle aggregation condition and sizedistribution of nano-silver particles were also investigated. The results showed that the size of Agparticles prepared in this polymer-protecting system is less than 50 nm, and PVP can reduce the growingtendency of nano-size silver particles. Meanwhile, the antibacterial dope loaded nano-silver particleswere prepared by wetting agent, dispersant, defoamer, etc. The antibacterial and bacteriostatic effects ofthe dope with or without nano-silver particles were tested with bacilli as the tested bacteria. Theexperiment results showed that the dope loaded nano-silver particles are of high practicality. Its antibacterialratio is also up to 91.9% in one hour when the added dosage of nano-silver is 0.02%

Notes: Steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence techniques have been used to study the photophysical behaviors of poly(N-vinyl carbazole), PNVCz and a series of N-vinyl carbazole-methyl acrylate (NVCz-co-MA) copolymers in dilute solution as a function of both NVCz composition and temperature. A kinetic scheme, intended to describe intramolecular excimer formation across the entire NVCz composition range, is proposed. In low aromatic content copolymers, two monomer species (unquenched and quenched monomer) and two excimer species (the sandwich-like excimer and a higher energy excimer) exist. The contribution from monomer emission to the overall fluorescence decreases with increasing NVCz content through increased excimer formation: this is likely to be consequent upon (1) an increase in the number of excimer forming sites, and (2) increasing efficiency of energy transfer from the excited monomers to the excimer forming sites. In the homopolymer, PNVCz, the only emission that can be observed on a nanosecond timescale is excimeric. This fluorescence appears to originate from three excimer species (the sandwich-like excimer, and two higher energy forms). For the homopolymer, the current observations are consistent with the model proposed by Vandendriessche and De Schryver [Polym. Photochem. 7, 153 (1986)]. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
