Notes: Abstract Total-body hyperthermia (TBHT) as a treatment for cancer may lead to a reduction in the host's immunocompetence as a result of the direct effects of heat on the immune system. Thus, we studied the influences of hyperthermiain vitro on the function of peritoneal macrophages from mice. Peritoneal macrophages from C3H/HeN mice were heatedin vitro for 3 hr at 37, 39, 40, 41 or 42°C. After exposure to heat, the phagocytic ability of the macrophages, as well as results of the nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) reduction test and the cytotoxity test were examined. The changes in all these parameters showed almost the same pattern: a tendency for macrophage functions to be potentiated up to 40°C, and a tendency towards inhibited functioning at temperatures above 41°C. Although augmented functions of macrophages were observed after exposure to mild hyperthermia (〈40°C), the possibility of TBHT (42°C)-induced inhibition of macrophage function must be further investigated in clinical trials of TBHT therapy for cancer.

A multivariate analysis in the invasive groups revealed six variables to be significantly related to a good prognosis including a young age, females, a location above the peritoneal reflection, well differentiated adenocarcinoma, negative lymphatic invasion, and curability A. Surgery with curability A should be performed to improve the survival in distal colorectal cancer patients with macroscopic invasion into the adjacent organs.

Notes: Abstract In order to confirm the structures of the autoxidation products of 2-tert-butyl-4-methoxyphenol (BHA), X-ray crystallographic analyses have been undertaken. One of the products was converted to a dibenzoate, which was subjected to the analysis to establish the structure as the O 6,O 7-dibenzoyl derivative of (1R*,2R*,6S*,7S*,9R*)-4,9-di-tert-butyl-6,7-dihydroxytricyclo[5.2.2.02, 6]undec-4-ene-3,8,10-trione. Crystallographic analysis of the major isomer of the two isomeric products gave its structure as (E)-4-tert-butyl-2-(3-tert-butyl-4-oxocyclopent-2-en-1-ylidene)cyclopent-4-ene-1,3-dione, which also established the structure of the minor isomer as the corresponding (Z)-isomer.

Notes: Abstract Four hepatocellular cancer patients and 11 metastatic liver cancer patients were treated with intra-hepato-arterial infusions of cis-diamminedichloroplatinum (II) plus 5-fluorouracil. Cis-diamminedichloroplatinum (II) (25–35 mg/m2) was given once a week, 5-fluorouracil (150–180 mg/m2) was infused daily. A partial response was obtained in 3 of 4 patients with primary cancer and in 5 of 9 evaluable metastatic cancer patients; the mean response durations were 27+ weeks in the former and 47+ weeks in the latter. However, severe bone marrow suppression occurred in 4 patients; 3 died of septicemia (2 cases) and massive intra-tracheal bleeding, respectively. This combined intra-hepato-arterial chemotherapy exerts a synergistic anticancer effect on malignant liver tumors, however, the related bone marrow suppression remains to be overcome.

Notes: Abstract Immunocompetence is generally reduced in patients with hairy cell leukemia (HCL)1, and splenectomy is advocated by many authorities as being the initial treatment of choice for HCL.2–4 A 46-year-old Japanese man with HCL underwent a splenectomy and was studied, with respect to immunological parameters, pre- and post-operatively. Preoperative analysis of the T cell subsets showed decreases in the proportions of OKT3 positive cells, OKT4 positive cells and OKT8 positive cells; a decrease in the OKT4/OKT8 ratio; and a markedly reduced lymphocyte blastic response in peripheral blood. After splenectomy, the increase in the proportion of OKT4 positive cells was greater than in that of OKT8 cells and the lymphocyte blastic response was also improved. The patient's post-operative course has been uneventful and immunological improvement is still recognizable now, 1 year after splenectomy.

Notes: Abstract A total of 506 distal colorectal cancer patients were classified into two groups, to clarify the variables affecting survival of the patients with macroscopic invasion into the adjacent organs: 47 cases showed invasion (invasive group) while the other did not show invasion (noninvasive group). Differences between the invasive and noninvasive groups were found in eight variables; female, large tumor size, gross types 3 and 4, moderately or poorly differentiated adenocarcinomas and signet-ring cell or mucinous carcinomas, deep cancer invasion, lymphatic invasion, peritoneal and liver metastases, and curability B-C were found significantly more frequently in the invasive group. The survival curve of the former was significantly (P〈0.05) lower than that of the latter. However, no significant difference was found between the survival curves of the patients with curability A (no residual tumors) in both groups. Notes: Abstract Purpose: To simulate drug distribution during balloon-occluded arterial chemotherapy infusion (BOAI) for urinary bladder cancer using subtraction computed tomography (CT) with low-flow-rate arterial contrast injection (S-CTLA). Methods: Ten patients with bladder cancer underwent S-CTLA, and the distribution of contrast agent during BOAI into both internal iliac arteries simultaneously was evaluated in nine pairs of internal iliac arteries and one single artery. For S-CTLA, spiral CT data were acquired before and after 0.2 ml/sec intraarterial injection of contrast material. The enhancement of the urinary bladder wall, the gluteal muscles, and the pelvic bones was categorized using a 4-grade scale. The grades were compared in each of the three pelvic components and differences were tested for significance using the Wilcoxon test for paired groups. Results: S-CTLA revealed the distribution of the contrast agent clearly. Gluteal muscles grades were significantly higher than those of the other two assessed components. Conclusion: BOAI does not improve the concentration of contrast agent to the bladder wall over neighboring structures, suggesting that the balloon occlusion technique does not achieve its desired goal for chemotherapy targeting.

Notes: Abstract A 10-month-old infant with tuberculous (Tb) meningitis accompanying hydrocephalus was successfully treated with a VP shunt operation soon after a PCR assay of CSF was found to be negative for Mycobacterium tuberculosis. PCR assay of CSF is helpful for determination of the timing for VP shunting in Tb meningitis.

Notes: Abstract A single-roller apparatus was used to quench 16 melts in the Bi2O3-WO3 system. Metastable polycrystalline phases were obtained in all compositions. Quenched specimens and their phase transformations on heating were examined by X-ray diffraction, differential thermal analysis, density measurement, electrical measurement and observation of optical anisotropy. F c c solid solutions of the type, 2WO3 → 2W ⋯ Bi + 30 ″ pI +30 X PO occurred in the quenched samples for 18 to 32 mol % WO3. Quenched phases remained unchanged with only a slight structural relaxation at temperatures lower than the first exotherm. Near the first exotherm, most samples showed an irregular change in the lattice parameter(s).

Notes: Abstract Amorphous SnO x films were deposited on sintered alumina substrates by ion-beam sputtering. They were annealed at 500° C for 2 h in air and polycrystalline films with thickness varying from about 1 to 700 nm were prepared. Film-sensor properties against 0.47% H2 gas were measured as a function of thickness and the operating temperature for 150 to 350° C. The film thickness exhibiting a sensitivity maximum increased gradually with temperature. The optimum thickness shifted from 7 nm at 150° C to 175 nm at 350° C. Highly sensitive films lay in a narrow thickness range of 60 to 180 nm and films thinner or thicker than this were relatively insensitive at 300 and 350°C. A model was proposed to interpret the sensitivity behaviour in terms of thickness and grain-boundary effect.
