    Notes: Long-time nonlinear behavior of single-mode longitudinal plasma waves is studied on the basis of the Vlasov equation with Fokker–Planck collision terms.     Notes: A dynamic small-angle x-ray scattering system (DSAXS) for the study of materials deformation and relaxation has been developed in the National Center for Small-Angle Scattering Research, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (NCSASR-ORNL), in collaboration with Polymer Research Institute of the University of Massachusetts. The principles of DSAXS are outlined, including experimental procedures such as π-sector and Fourier expansion techniques. A few important functions required for studies of crystalline polymers, namely, static and dynamic lamellar orientation, dynamic lamellar separation, dynamic invariant function, etc., are defined. The hardware and software of the DSAXS system are described. Some preliminary results obtained for a spherulitic high-density polyethylene by π-sector technique and for a row-nucleated polybutene-1 by Fourier expansion techniques are demonstrated to evaluate the performance of the system.

    Notes: The aim of this work was to study the effects of pH, a metal complexing reagent (citrate) and the concentration of substrate on the bioaccumulation of tetravalent actinides, using Th4+ as a model, by a phosphates-catalysed reaction. This yields HPO42- which precipitates with heavy metals as cell-bound metal phosphate. Poor removal of The from solution was observed, which is in accordance with the solution chemistry of the metal. A considerable improvement in the efficiency of thorium removal was obtained by incorporating ammonium acetate (NH4Ac) into the solution. Although extensive deposition of polycrustaling NH4UO2PO4 was observed previously by cells that had accumulated UO22+, no evidence for deposition of cstalline thorium phosphate was obtained by X-ray diffraction analysis. Examination by proton induced X-ray emission (PIXE) analysis. Examination by proton induced X-ray emission (PIXE) analysis showed a non-homogenous thorium deposit of variable phosphorous content.

    Notes: The variation in small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) for samples of crystalline polymers subjected to oscillatory strains has been observed employing the 10-m SAXS apparatus with a two-dimensional position-sensitive detector at the National Center for Small-Angle Scattering Research at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Signal averaging has been carried out in accordance with the π/2-sector technique by gating the detection of scattered intensity in synchronism with the sample strain. In-phase and out-of-phase intensity changes have been observed for a high-density polyethylene at various frequencies (0.05-3.2 Hz) and temperatures (0-70°C). Changes are greatest at small scattering angles. Frequency dependence is greatest at lower temperatures, indicating a time-dependent response of the structural changes leading to scattering at these temperatures. The behavior is not pronounced at elevated temperatures. The similarity of the scattering at both azimuthal angles of 0° and 90° suggests the existence of an additional mechanism, perhaps microvoid formation. To evaluate void contribution, the dynamic invariant function is determined as a function of frequency and temperature. It appears that the microvoid formation lags behind the applied strain. The static and swelling SAXS studies present further evidence of void generation during elongation.

    Notes: We have examined the phosphorylation of the cyclic adenosine 3′:5′ monophosphate (cAMP) cell surface chemotactic receptor and a 36 kDa membrane-associated protein (p36) in Dictyostelium discoideum. The activity of CAR-kinase, the enzyme responsible for the phosphorylation of the cAMP receptor, was studied in plasma membrane preparations. It was foud that, as in intact cells, the receptor was rapidly phosphorylated in membranes incubated with [γ32P] adenosine triphosphate (ATP) but only in the presence of cAMP. This phosphorylation was not observed in membranes prepared from cells which did not display significant cAMP binding activity. cAMP could induce receptor phosphorylation at low concentrations, while cyclic guanosine 3′:5′ monophosphate (cGMP) could elicit receptor phosphorylation only at high concentrations. Neither ConA, Ca2+, or guanine nucleotides had an effect on CAR-kinase. It was also observed that 2-deoxy cAMP but not dibutyryl cAMP induced receptor phosphorylation. The data suggest that the ligand occupied form of the cAMP receptor is required for CAR-kinase activity. Although the receptor is rapidly dephosphorylated in vivo, we were unable to observe its dephosphorylation in vitro. In contrast, p36 was rapidly dephosphorylated. Also, unlike the cAMP receptor, the phosphorylation of p36 was found to be regulated by the addition of guanine nucleotides. Guanosine diphosphate (GDP) enhanced the phosphorylation while guanosine triphosphate (GTP) decreased the radiolabeling of p36 indicating that GTP can compete with ATP for the nucleotide triphosphate binding site of p36 kinase. This was verified using radiolabeled GTP as the phosphate donor. Competition experiments with GTPγS, ATP, GTP, CTP, and uridine triphosphate (UTP) indicated that the phosphate donor site of p36 kinase is relatively non-sepcific. The mechanism(s) by which GDP functions to alter p36 phosphorylation and the physiological significance of this event are currently under investigation.
