Notes: Air cooling is a near dry machining method, which cools cutting area and evacuates chipsusing low temperature cold wind instead of cutting liquid. It can decrease tool wear, increase toollife, reduce machining cost and bring no chemical pollution. In this paper, air cooling test wascarried on, in which vortex tube was used for cooling and high hardness bear steel GCr15 wasmachined by PCBN tool. Experiment results indicated that cold air from vortex tube has asignificant effect on cutting force, cutting temperature and chip formation process. This paper’sconclusions will have a great reference value for the practical application of air cooling technology

Notes: It is by the emissivity of the goal objects and the noise problem of the high temperatureimages that people are puzzled during the course of the cutting temperature tested by the applicationof thermal imaging device. By using thermocouples, and getting the comparison of thermocouplesand the thermal imaging system temperature, we calibrate object emissivity, handle the image noiseby improved median method, carry on the edge extraction of image, obtain the temperature ofmeasured objects, and finally confirm the accuracy of the data got by the thermal imaging devicewith contact measurement

Notes: Machining hardened steels has become an important manufacturing process, particularlyin the automotive and bearing industries. Hardened steel GCr15 with its harness between HRC50and HRC65 is one kind of more difficult machining material. Abrasive processes such as grindinghave typically been required to machine hardened steels, but advances in machine tools and a newcutting material of polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN) have allowed hard turning onmodern lathes to seems to gain an ever increasing industrial acceptance as an economically andenvironmentally friendly alternative to many grinding applications. In this paper, based on large deformation theory and updated Lagrangian procedure, a coupledthermo-mechanical plane strain orthogonal precision cutting model with general finite elementanalysis software is developed to the influence of cutting edge preparation on the cutting of GCr15with PCBN tool, such as cutting forces, shear angle, and cutting temperature. The three majordesigns of cutting edge preparation are used on most commercial cutting inserts: a) sharp edge, b)honed edge, and c) chamfer edge. The friction between the tool and the chip is assumed to follow ashear model and the local adaptive remeshing technique is used for the formation of chip. Thecalculated principle cutting forces are compared with published data and found to be in goodagreement. The simulation results can be used as a practical tool both by researchers and toolmakersto design new tools with rational tool edge and to optimize the cutting process
