Conclusions The All-Union Institute for Refractories and the Azov Steel, Western Siberia, and Cherepovets Metallurgical Combines have developed a method of guniting converter linings by the application of refractory slag-forming coatings. After application the coating serves as a refractory protecting the lining from wear, and when worn it is converted into slag and is used as a slag-forming material for refining of the steel. For application of a refractory slag-forming coating the use of converter lime with a high reactivity or waste products of it (screenings or suction dust) with binders of silica-containing compounds having a low melting point, such as a mixture of eutectic composition with CaO and SiO2 in a ratio of 11∶9, is recommended. At present the method of application of a refractory slag-forming coating has been introduced into three combines, where special equipment has been constructed and is in use for the preparation of lime guniting mixtures. In the Azov Steel Combine during introduction of the process there was an annual saving of 200,000 rubles.
