    Notes: Dental organs of incisors from normal, dwarf and growth hormone-treated dwarf rats were analysed histochemically using a panel of lectins. A distinctive pattern of differential staining was obtained with Helix pomatia agglutinin, a lectin specific for N-acetylgalactosamine. In Bouin's perfused and paraffin-embedded undecalcified tissues from normal rats, reaction product for N-acetylgalactosamine was visible in the odontogenic cells and some extracellular matrices. In the growth hormone-deficient dwarf rats, the N-acetylgalactosamine reaction was consistently minimal in the odontoblasts, predentin, cementoblasts, cementoid, osteoblasts and osteoid matrices, although the staining of ameloblasts and osteoclasts was similar to normal. Administration of growth hormone to dwarf rats for six days (66 μg/100 g rat b.i.d.) restored the reaction for N-acetylgalactosamine in the affected matrices. Thus, an N-acetylgalactosamine rich matrix component is differentially expressed during odontogenesis. Growth hormone may regulate this component in these matrices, which may be a proteoglycan or a glycoprotein, essential for normal growth of the teeth.

    Notes: Nucleolar organizers are major sites of ribosomal RNA synthesis and provide an index of transcriptional activity. In order to further define growth hormone actions on nucleolar organizer regions in tooth forming cells, hypophysectomized rats treated with growth hormone for 4 and 24 h, hypophysectomized and sham-operated animals were used. After demineralization and standard paraffin embedding, longitudinal sections of maxillary incisors were stained by a silver stain technique to reveal nucleolar organizer regions. The area of these regions per nucleus was measured using a modified microdensitometer. Analyses of variance of the resulting data showed that preameloblasts and preodontoblasts have greater silver stained nucleolar organizer region values than ameloblasts and odontoblasts. Hypophysectomy reduced and growth hormone partly restored the level of nucleolar organizer regions in preameloblasts and preodontoblasts, but not in mature ameloblasts or odontoblasts. In the case of the younger preameloblasts and preodontoblasts, the effect of growth hormone was seen within 4 h of growth hormone injection. In conclusion, rRNA synthesis, as revealed by the specific silver staining of nucleolar organizer regions in tooth forming cells, appears to be regulated by growth hormone over a relatively short time frame.

    Notes: To document the effect of hypophysectomy and growth hormone replacement on the ultrastructure of cementogenesis in the developing rat third molar, 12 female Wistar rats were randomly allocated to normal control, hypophysectomized or hypophysectomized plus human growth hormone (for 10 days) treatment groups. The results of this study by electron and light microscopy and morphometry have shown that qualitative and quantitative changes occur in the organelles of cementoblasts forming cellular cementum as a result of hypophysectomy and growth hormone replacement. After hypophysectomy, the changes of less prominent nucleoli and nuclear pores, less prominent Golgi apparatuses and decreased endoplasmic reticulum can be interpreted as diminished cementum matrix biosynthesis – an interpretation that can be confirmed morphometrically by less cellular cementum formation. Growth hormone replacement for 10 days reactivates protein synthesis and cementogenesis as evidenced by ultrastructural changes in cementoblasts and a greater production of cementum.

    Notes: Abstract First, a sequence of four-zone models for the interior of Venus is constructed under the assumption of hydrostatic equilibrium. While the equation of state for each zone is taken to be the Bullen's relation with its coefficients consistent with the PREM Earth model (Dziewonski and Anderson, 1981), the position of core-mantle boundary is determined by matching solutions of the Emden's equation in different regions. The results of hydrostatic models indicate the presence of a reasonably large molten iron core in Venus, broadly similar to the Earth. It is also found that the position of the core-mantle interface is nearly model-independent. Second, we focus on the question why Venus does not possess a significant global magnetic field and on what we can learn from this fact. Solutions of magnetohydrodynamic equations appropriate for the molten core of Venus are discussed. It is argued that, because the Elsasser number Λ measuring the relative importance of Coriolis and Lorentz forces satisfies Λ ≪ 1, equations for the problem of thermal convection in the Venusian fluid core must be nearly uncoupled with the dynamo equation. The existence of a global magnetic field, though small, then suggests that the size of the magnetic Reynolds numberR m must beR m =O(10), sustaining a dynamo action near its marginal state but not an active dynamo in the Venusian molten core. On the basis of asymptotic relations for finite amplitude convection, a useful constraint on important physical parameters for the liquid core of Venus is derived and discussed.

Some suggestions are made for the future space explorations. Finally, the ranges of dynamical flattening and of the obliquity of Venus are calculated.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper the relation between the uncertainty of the Moon's mean moment of inertia δ(I/Ma 2) and that of the core density δπc is discussed with a two-layer model of the Moon - a mantle obeying Roche's law of the density distribution and a homogeneous core (Fe-core or Fe-FeS-core). When the uncertainty of I/Ma 2 is 0.0023 (that is the accuracy in present observation), a core with radius of 450 km will be appropriate to the limitation of δπc about 1 g cm−3. Considering the accuracy obtained in space explorations, and the compressibility and the quasi-homogeneity of the Moon, we suggest that the parameters C 20, β, γ, a, and GM of the Moon should define as primary constants, but C 22 and C/Ma 2 as derived constants. Therefore, the ratio of mass of Moon to that of Earth in the IAU (1976) system of astronomical constants will become a deducible constant.

    Notes: Abstract In the IERS Standards (1989), for the Moon the adopted value of the tide Love number, k 2, is equal to 0.0222. In this paper using the latest geodetic parameters of the Moon a group of internal structure models are constructed for this celestial body (see Table V), then the dependence of the Moon's core size on calculated value of k 2 is explored. The obtained results indicate that the second degree Love number, k 2 = 0.02664, of the lunar model 91–04 is near its observed value (0.027 ± 0.006). This implies that the Moon may possess an outer core of 660 km radius and of 300 kbar mean rigidity. With the same method the static Love numbers from degree 2 to 30 are computed for the terrestrial planets — Mercury, Venus, and Mars (see Table VII), and the influence of some parameters (such as the rigidity) of the outer core on low degree Love numbers is discussed. Finally, the likely range of the second degree Love numbers is determined for the terrestrial planets (see Table XI). It seems that if low degree Love numbers of a terrestrial planet can be detected in the future space explorations, there is some possibility to improve the planetary internal structure model. For example, as soon as space techniques yield an observed value of k 2 〉 0.10 for Mercury, there will be reason to anticipate that a partly melted iron core exists in this planet.

    Notes: Abstract Using the Stokes coefficients of the Moon recommended by IERS Standards (1992), we determined the expression of lunar equipotential surface (selenoid), then calculated the parameters of best-fitting lunar ellipsoid. Moreover, we derived a set of hydrostatic values of lunar physical parameters by solving the Clairaut equation, and discussed the feature of nonhydrostatic component in the figure parameters of the Moon. Finally, we suggest that the lunar physical parameters should be divided into three kinds: primary constants, derived constants, and estimated constants (see Table III); as well that the second-degree Love number,k 2, of the Moon should belong to the estimated constants. At present, in view of the accuracy in reductions of LLR data, a value ofk 2 obtained from model calculations should be defined as its adopted value. For example, the value ofk 2, 0.0266, in this paper can replace 0.0222 in IERS Standards (1992).
