Notes: Drop formation at the tip of a vertical, circular capillary tube immersed in a second immiscible fluid is studied numerically for low-Reynolds-number flows using the boundary integral method. The evolution and breakup of the drop fluid is considered to assess the influences of the viscosity ratio λ, the Bond number B, and the capillary number C for 10−2≤λ≤10, 10−2≤C≤1, and 0.1≤B≤5. For very small λ, breakup occurs at shorter times, there is no detectable thread between the detaching drop and the remaining pendant fluid column, and thus no large satellite drops are formed. The distance to detachment increases monotonically with λ and changes substantially for λ〉1, but the volume of the primary drop varies only slightly with λ. An additional application of the numerical investigation is to consider the effect of imposing a uniform flow in the ambient fluid [e.g., Oguz and Prosperetti, J. Fluid Mech. 257, 111 (1993)], which is shown to lead to a smaller primary drop volume and a longer detachment length, as has been previously demonstrated primarily for high-Reynolds-number flows. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The absolute configuration of α-LiIO3 crystals has been reinvestigated. The redetermination of the absolute configuration is in agreement with a report by Stadnicka, Glazer & Moxon [J. Appl. Cryst. (1985), 18, 237–240]. Special attention should be paid to the selection of Bijvoet pairs in these and similar crystals. The signs of the piezoelectric and pyroelectric coefficients have been verified and correlated with the spontaneous polarization. The pyroelectric coefficient p3 was −4.4 × 10−5 C m−2 K−1 at 180 K. The correlation between the optical activity and the morphology of the crystals is discussed.

Notes: Two-dimensional chaotic mixing of similar Newtonian fluids in the presence of an advected dissimilar minor phase fluid body with specified size, interfacial tension, and viscosity ratio was numerically investigated. Interfacial tension was sufficiently high to allow only small deformations in the dissimilar minor phase body. Mixing was confined to a rectangular cavity with periodically driven upper and lower surfaces. Regions of regular motion (i.e., islands) of comparable size to the minor phase body were eventually destroyed or replaced by the minor phase body. Islands persisted for longer times when the initial separation distance between the minor phase body and island was large or when the viscosity ratio was small. When interfacial tension was small enough to deform the minor phase body more readily, islands showed little indication of instability. Results suggest opportunities for improving mixing uniformity in practical processes and disclose how interactions between dissimilar fluids affect mixing.
