    Notes: Abstract Provision of Quality‐of‐Service (QoS) guarantees is an important and challenging issue in the design of integrated‐services packet networks. Call admission control is an integral part of the challenge and is closely related to other aspects of networks such as service models, scheduling disciplines, traffic characterization and QoS specification. In this paper we provide a theoretical framework within which call admission control schemes with multiple statistical QoS guarantees can be constructed for the Generalized Processor Sharing (GPS) scheduling discipline. Using this framework, we present several admission control schemes for both session‐based and class‐based service models. The theoretical framework is based on recent results in the statistical analysis of the GPS scheduling discipline and the theory of effective bandwidths. Both optimal schemes and suboptimal schemes requiring less computational effort are studied under these service models. The QoS metric considered is loss probability.

    Notes: Abstract We establish asymptotic upper and lower bounds on the asymptotic decay rate of per-session queue length tail distributions for a multiple-queue system where a single constant rate server services the queues using the generalized processor sharing (GPS) scheduling discipline. In the special case where there are only two queues, the upper and lower bounds match, yielding the optimal bound proved in [15]. The dynamics of bandwidth sharing of a multiple-queue GPS system is captured using the notion of partial feasible sets, and the bounds are obtained using the sample-path large deviation principle. The results have implications in call admission control for high-speed communication networks.

    Notes: The friction behavior of Ti3SiC2 sliding against low carbon steel was studied. Tests were carried out on a block-on-disk type friction tester, with the normal pressures from 0.2 MPa to 0.8 MPa and the sliding speed of 20 m/s. The results showed that, irrespective of the normal pressure, the friction coefficient exhibits a transition period in the initial stage of a sliding friction process, in which the friction coefficient increases from an initial value and tends to a saturation value, and then entersinto a relatively steady stage. The results also showed that, the friction coefficient of the steady stage decreases gradually from 0.35 to 0.26 with increase in normal pressure from 0.2 MPa to 0.8 MPa. The friction surfaces were observed by using SEM. It was found that all the surfaces were covered by a layer consisting of the frictional products with antifriction effect, and that the denseness and thethickness of the layer were increased with increase in normal pressure applied

    Notes: In this study, free Ti/Si/Al/C powder mixtures with molar ratio of 3:0.4:0.8:1.8 were heated inArgon with various schedules, in order to reveal the possibility for the synthesis of Ti3Si0.4Al0.8C1.8 solidsolution powder. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used for the evaluation of phase identities of the powderafter different treatments. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to observe the morphology ofthe Ti3Si0.4Al0.8C1.8 solid solution. XRD results showed that predominantly single phase samples ofTi3Si0.4Al0.8C1.8 was prepared after heating at 1400oC for 5 min in Argon and the lattice parameters ofTi3Si0.4Al0.8C1.8 lay between those of Ti3SiC2 and Ti3AlC2

    Notes: The Ti3SiC2 samples with a second phase TiC, prepared by hot-pressing progress route, were rubbed against low carbon steel disk with a sliding speed of 20 m/s under normal pressure 0.8 Mpa in atmosphere on a block-on-disk type friction tester. The morphology was observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and meanwhile the composition was checked by energy dispersion spectroscopy (EDS). X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns show some impurity phases containing Ti, Si and Fe oxides in the samples. The possible tribo-chemical reaction mechanism on surface layer of Ti3SiC2 was suggested

    Notes: Characteristics of the frictional layer in high-purity Ti3SiC2 and TiC-contained Ti3SiC2, sliding against low carbon steel, were investigated. The friction and wear tests were made using a block-on-disk type friction tester with sliding speed of 20 m/s and several normal pressures from 0.1 MPa to 0.8 MPa. It was found that all friction surfaces, whether high-purity Ti3SiC2 or TiC-contained Ti3SiC2, were covered by a layer consisting of the oxides of Ti, Si and Fe. The layer was sticky,superimposed layer-by-layer, and the compact was increased with the normal pressure increasing. Because its antifriction effect, the friction coefficient decreases from the maximum 0.35 to 0.27 with increase in the normal pressure from 0.2 MPa to 0.8 MPa for the high-purity Ti3SiC2, and decreases from the maximum 0.55 to 0.37 for the same change of the normal pressure for the TiC-contained Ti3SiC2. The contained TiC grains had effects on the stickiness, liquidness, as well as the morphology of the layer, and induced the friction coefficient to increase in the entire level

    Notes: An Al2O3 matrix composites, i.e. partially stabilized zirconia toughening alumina (ZTA) reinforced by SiC particle (ZTA-SiCP), was prepared by hot pressing (HP). Fatigue behavior of ZTA-SiCP under cyclic compressive loads was investigated on different loading conditions. The application of cyclic compressive loads to a notched specimen led to a stable crack growth along the notch plane in adirection normal to the far-field compressive axis. Irreversible damages in the main form of microcrack were induced at the stress concentration zone during compression loading, and it led to high residual tensile stresses ahead of the notch root upon unloading. Nucleation and growth of a model I fatigue crack were caused by the residual tensile stresses at the notch root. Along with propagation of the fatigue crack, a gradual decrease in crack growth rate was shown due to the crack closure caused by accumulating of debris particles within the wake of growing crack, and thus led to the crack arrested at last. The fatigue crack length was investigated as a function of notch length, the maximum compressive stress, stress range and load frequency

    Notes: Al/Ti3AlC2 composites containing 50vol% Al were prepared with high purity of polycrystallineTi3AlC2 and aluminum powders by pressureless-sintering route at temperatures of 700ºC~ 800ºC Thetribological properties of the composites were investigated by sliding the composites block dryly againstlow carbon steel disk under high sliding speed. Before and after friction test, the morphology and phaseanalysis were observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), separately.A definite tribo-glazing layer was found over the worn surface of the composite block, which was theresults of tribo-chemical oxidation reaction and the cause forming it could be the high frictionaltemperature and the mechanical catabolism between the surface of Al/Ti3AlC2 and low carbon steelduring sliding friction. The effect of Ti3AlC2 on tribological properties of Al/Ti3AlC2 composite and thepossible tribo-chemical reaction mechanism on surface layer of Al/Ti3AlC2 were suggested

    Notes: Various toughening methods, i.e. partially stabilized zirconia transformation toughening, transformation- SiC whisker reinforcing and transformation-SiC particle reinforcing were used to improve the mechanical properties of alumina ceramic. Influence of various toughening methods on microstructure and mechanical properties of the alumina-matrix composites were studied. On the basis of transformation toughening, by which the strength and toughness of Al2O3 ceramic improved simultaneously, the addition of SiC whisker substantially enhanced the toughness, whereas the addition of SiC particle increased both toughness and strength to a certain degree. Mechanical properties of the testing materials were closely related with their morphologies of fracture surfaces. Toughening mechanisms of the composites were also studied. In the transformation-whiskerreinforced composite or the transformation-particle reinforced composite, the two toughening methods affected with each other and produced a cooperative toughening effect
