Notes: Abstract It is shown theoretically that ultrashort terahertz electromagnetic pulses can be generated in resonant systems containing a quantum semiconductor superlattice. This effect is due to the compression of radiation incident on a cavity as a result of ultrafast self-modulation of the cavity Q factor upon cyclic switching of the superlattice from the screening to the transparent state in a pump field.

Notes: Abstract Self-action and generation of the harmonics of intense electromagnetic radiation interacting with quantum lateral semiconductor superlattices are investigated theoretically using a self-consistent approach. The calculations are based on a semiclassical description of electron transport in a conduction miniband in an electrodynamic model of an equivalent current screen. Multistep, multistable, self-induced transparency is obtained. The effect is associated with the dynamic localization of electrons in the self-consistent electromagnetic field and it appears only if the density of free current carriers in the superlattice is higher than a certain critical value. It is shown that the bleaching of the structure is accompanied by efficient generation of odd-numbered radiation harmonics, whose intensity peaks lie near the transparency threshold.

Notes: Abstract The thermal nonlinearity of superconducting films in an electromagnetic field is investigated theoretically. It is shown that the transition of the superconductor from the superconducting to the normal state as a result of Joule heating exhibits hysteresis, corresponding to the onset of a bistable state in the film. It is shown that as a result of the nonuniformity of the amplitude of the electromagnetic field along the surface of the superconducting film, above some threshold a normal-phase domain forms in the superconductor. It is ascertained that the temporal evolution of the domain walls exhibits the character of thermal autowaves of heating or cooling. The nonlinear radio-frequency characteristics (reflection and transmission coefficients and frequency responses) of a stripline resonator under conditions of thermal nonlinearity are calculated.

Notes: Abstract A study is made of the thermal superconducting-normal (S-N) transition induced in hightemperature superconducting films by the Joule heating of small nonsuperconducting defects in a microwave field. It is shown that the loss of superconductivity either leads to the formation of a finite region of normal phase localized near the defect or encompasses the entire film. Estimates of the threshold and S-N switching time show good agreement with the experimental data.

Notes: Abstract Radical polymerization and nucleophilic addition of an amide group to the double bond of acrylamide take place parallel in conditions of shear deformation and high pressures (up to 8 GPa). Large shear deformations cause the formation of β-alanine as the result of reactions of hydrolysis of amide groups and peptide bonds.

Notes: Abstract Solid mixtures of carboxylic acids and aromatic amines react under shear deformation at high pressure (to 8 GPa) for form amides, in the case of ortho-phenylenediamine-substituted benzimidazoles are formed. Under these conditions the conversion rates are hundreds of thousands of times higher than when the same processes are carried out in liquid phase. The cyclization reaction is accelerated to a lesser degree than the reaction of formation of the corresponding amide. The increase of the length of the carboxylic acid radical prevents the cyclization reaction.

Notes: Abstract Under conditions of shear deformation and high pressures (SD+HP), reactions of nucleophilic substitution were studied: 1) the replacement of aliphatic halogen atom with alkaline metal halides (halo-substituted aliphatic carboxylic acids, 1-bromoadamantane); 2) the replacement of halogen atom in aromatic nucleus (halobenzoic acids, dihalobenzenes) with halogen of salt; 3) the replacement of aliphatic halogen with hydroxyl (hydrolysis in a solid phase); 4) the replacement of halogen with amino group under deformation of the samples of ammonium α-halocarboxylates to give the corresponding amino acids. It was found that the exchange of the halogen atoms bonded with aliphatic carbon is most intensive in the mixtures of alkaline metal iodides with bromo-substituted acetic and propionic acids: the exchange reaction in these mixtures is observed even during grinding in the mortar. Unlike the liquid phase, under conditions of SD+HP exchange of the halogen atom of the aromatic nucleus with alkaline metal halides, proceeds successfully, and the reactivity of halides increases in the series Na 〈 K 〈 Rb 〈 Cs. Under SD+HP, 1-Br-adamantane reacts with water to form 1-adamantanol. A high reactivity of the water adsorbed by the reagents is observed.

Notes: Abstract Study has been made of the pressure distribution over rotatable Bridgman anvils prepared from KhVG steel and VK-6 alloy, working at room temperature and over the pressure range from 10 to 40 kbar. The pressure distribution was determined by following the polymerization of acrylamide under the combined action of high pressure and deformational shear. The polymer yield was found to increase with increasing pressure at fixed angle of rotation of the anvil. Study was made of the effect of pressure on the polymer yield over various annular zones marked out within the sample. The pressure distribution was found to vary with the material of which the anvil was constructed, the normal pressure, and the sample geometry. It was also found that there was one interval within which the pressure over the anvil was almost constant.
