    Notes: Background: Benefits of cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) are well established. However, less is understood concerning its effects on myocardial repolarization and the potential proarrhythmic risk. Methods and Results: Healthy dogs (n = 8) were compared to a long QT interval (LQT) model (n = 8, induced by cesium chloride, CsCl) and a dilated cardiomyopathy with congestive heart failure (DCM-CHF, induced by rapid ventricular pacing, n = 5). Monophasic action potential (MAP) recordings were obtained from the subendocardium, midmyocardium, subepicardium, and the transmural dispersion of repolarization (TDR) was calculated. The QT interval and the interval from the peak to the end of the T wave (Tp-e) were measured. All these characteristics were compared during left ventricular epicardial (LV-Epi), right ventricular endocardial (RV-Endo), and biventricular (Bi-V) pacing. In healthy dogs, TDR prolonged to 37.54 ms for Bi-V pacing and to 47.16 ms for LV-Epi pacing as compared to 26.75 ms for RV-Endo pacing (P 〈 0.001), which was parallel to an augmentation in Tp-e interval (Bi-V pacing, 64.29 ms; LV-Epi pacing, 57.89 ms; RV-Endo pacing, 50.29 ms; P 〈 0.01). During CsCl exposure, Bi-V and LV-Epi pacing prolonged MAPD, TDR, and Tp-e interval as compared to RV-Endo pacing. The midmyocardial MAPD (276.30 ms vs 257.35 ms, P 〈 0.0001) and TDR (33.80 ms vs 27.58 ms, P=0.002) were significantly longer in DCM-CHF dogs than those in healthy dogs. LV-Epi and Bi-V pacing further prolonged the MAPD and TDR in this model. Conclusions: LV-Epi and Bi-V pacing result in prolongation of ventricular repolarization time, and increase of TDR accounted for a parallel augmentation of the Tp-e interval, which provides evidence that Tp-e interval accurately represents TDR. These effects are magnified in the LQT and DCM-CHF canine models in addition to their intrinsic transmural heterogeneity in the intact heart. This mechanism may contribute to the development of malignant ventricular arrhythmias, such as torsades de pointes (TdP) in congestive heart failure (CHF) patients treated with CRT.

    Notes: Abstract Ether extracts from a resistant rice variety, Jingxian 89, and a susceptible variety, Qidaizhan, were significantly toxic to Nilaparvata lugens adult females, causing 98% and 73.5% mortalities, respectively. The area covered honeydew droplets excreted by N. lugens adult females while feeding on Qidaizhan was 28.5-fold more than the area of those feeding on the resistant variety, Jingxian 89. The honeydew covered areas were reduced 29.7- and 8.8-fold, respectively, after feeding on plants treated with the ether extracts from both varieties. Among the fractions from each variety, fractions 9 (three sterols) from both varieties and fraction 10 (3-nitraphthalic acid) from Jingxian 89 showed significant repellent effects on the planthoppers. Further bioassays revealed that fraction 9 from extracts of both varieties at 0.02 mg/ml or higher deterred the feeding activity of the planthoppers, whereas the deterrent effects of fraction 10 from the extract of Jingxian 89 were 100- to 500-fold stronger than those of fraction 9. Fraction 10, identified as 3-nitraphthalic acid, unique in Jingxian 89, was extremely toxic to N. lugens adult females, and the LC50 and LC90 were 0.00045 and 0.00525 mg/ml, respectively. After extensive bioassays and analysis, we concluded that 3-nitraphthalic acid plays a key role in the resistance to N. lugens adult females.

    Notes: Modification of the threadline dynamics has effected significant alternations in the structure and improvements in the properties of high-speed melt spun poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fibers. Key process parameters extant in the threadline dynamics, such as temperature, tensile stress, and deformation time, were independently controlled through proper implementation of on-line perturbations. The placement of a liquid isothermal bath in close proximity to the spinneret in the melt spinning threadline provided tremendous increase in the spinning stress while at the same time controlled the filament temperature corresponding to development of the desired fiber structure. Characterization of the fiber structure and physical properties has been carried out using birefringence measurements, density, shrinkage, x-ray diffraction, DSC, FTIR spectroscopy, and tensile tests. The results provided sufficient evidence to support the existence of a unique crystalline morphology that led to the significantly improved tensile properties and excellent dimensional stability of the resulting fibers. This unique crystalline morphology was typically characterized by the presence of a larger amount of extended chain segments and an enhanced molecular connectivity. ©1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: The process of melt-spinning poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) filament at high speeds was modified through the inclusion of a liquid isothermal bath (LIB) in the spinline. A wide range of positions, temperatures, and depths associated with the operation of the LIB were utilized in this study. The structural characteristics and mechanical properties of the as-spun fibers were characterized by birefringence, wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), infrared spectroscopy, and tensile testing. Experimental results showed that the structure and mechanical properties of the as-spun fibers were significantly influenced by the LIB operating conditions. The as-spun fibers prepared under optimum LIB conditions exhibit high birefringence and excellent mechanical properties. Results suggest the development of a critical value of threadline stress that is determined primarily by LIB depth and take-up velocity. Below this critical value, raising of LIB temperature, LIB depth, and take-up velocity resulted in increases of the apparent crystallite size, sample crystallinity, and both the crystalline and amorphous orientation. As would be expected, the mechanical properties of the fiber samples were improved in a corresponding manner. Above this critical stress value, molecular chains in the amorphous phase are stretched tautly, but the crystal growth process is restricted, resulting in a decrease in crystallite size and crystallinity, as well as a continued increase in mechanical properties. The fiber properties were also found to be very responsive to the relative location of the LIB. A unique structure, believed never before obtained in a one-step high-speed PET melt-spinning process, has been achieved that combines high amorphous orientation, low crystallinity, and high tenacity. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
