Description / Table of Contents:
The dehydration of Gibbsite (Al2O3 · 3 H2O) has been investigated by means of the dynamic differential calorimetry. It was found that Boehmite was formed as an intermediary phase under normal pressure conditions (p = 1 atm). This Bochmite then is dehydrated with the rest of Gibbsite not completely used in the reaction to γ-Al2O3 that can be calcined only up to Al2O3 · 0,05 H2O when heated in a normal course. The rest of that water can be driven out after heating the samples up to 1000°C for some hours. The heat of reaction for Al2O3 · 3 H2O → Al2O3 + 3 H2O results from the thermograms to + 30 130 (cal/mol) when the specific heats (25°C) of all reacting substances are taken into consideration. The heat of formation of Gibbsite follows from the values of γ-Al2O3 and water (liquid) to ° = -630200 (cal/mol).
Notes:
