Description / Table of Contents: Summary The regeneration of the liver occurring after partial hepatectomy is also demonstrable in the explanted tissue. Forty-eight hours after the partial hepatectomy the explanted liver of adult rats takes up radioactive phosphate from the culture medium in the same range of magnitude as does the explanted liver of embryonal rats, but it takes up more than twice as much as the normal liver of adult rats. From this it is apparent, that for the maintenance of this regeneration a continuous secretion of an endocrine factor is not essential. The normal livers of rats, which are maintained in parabiosis with animals from which a part of the liver has been resected, likewise show a considerable increase of the in vitro phosphorylation. The humorally-induced process of growth in the normal liver in this instance continues in full extent after interruption of the supply of the stimulating substance.
