Notes: The synthesis and characterization of new poly({6-[4-(4-cyanophenylcarbamoyl)phenoxy]hexyl methacrylate}-co-{6-[4-(4- cyanophenylazo)phenoxy]hexyl methacrylate}) are reported. Their liquid-crystalline properties are investigated using differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing microscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques. The glass transition temperatures and the clearing points can be influenced by variation of the copolymer composition. The substances offer a relatively broad temperature range of mesomorphic properties suitable for photochemical studies.

Notes: A new route of synthesis of liquid-crystalline polymethacrylates was investigated. The synthetic route involved side-group liquid-crystalline polymethacrylates (LCPMA) with a turned ester group between the aromatic rings in the central unit of mesogens (2) as compared with the usual LCPMA (1). For a series of compounds of this type the liquid-crystalline properties were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing microscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques. Generally stable smectic phases were found for these isomeric LCPMA. The described synthetic route opens possibilities to form new polymers from a wide field of educts.

Notes: The synthesis and characterization of a series of liquid-crystalline copolymethacrylates containing side chains with both azobenzene and benzanilide moieties is described. The phase behaviour of the polymers is discussed in dependence of their copolymer composition. The copolymers are suitable for optical investigations on the photochemical trans-cis isomerization of the azo group.
