    Notes: The dynamics of the scattering of nitric oxide (NO) from well-characterized and ordered layers of carbon monoxide (CO) and ethylidyne (CCH3) adsorbed on a Pt(111) substrate have been investigated through resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) measurements of the rotational quantum state distributions of the scattered NO molecules for a range of incident NO translational energies between 10 and 50 kJ mol−1 from scattering substrates at 108 and 300 K. The measurements reveal that, where in principle the interaction potential resembles that of the NO–Ag(111) system more so than that of the NO–Pt(111) system, the scattering differs remarkably from that expected from a weakly bound system in that it occurs both into a trapping-desorption channel and a direct inelastic channel. Experimental data are presented that indicate both an incident translational energy dependence and substrate surface temperature dependence of the scattering, which is interpreted in terms of a hard-cube model. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Time-of-flight profiles for scattered NO are reported for a range of incident NO translational energies between 10 and 50 kJ mol−1 from scattering substrates at 108 and 300 K. The measurements reveal that scattering occurs both into a trapping-desorption channel and a direct inelastic channel. The latter is accompanied by a significant (〉60%) loss in the NO translational energy. This is true for both substrates and contrasts markedly with the many observations made of atomic and molecular scattering from clean metal single crystal planes. Hard cube model calculations are presented as a basis for the interpretation of the direct inelastic behavior that point toward a surface collision partner mass of the same magnitude as the incident molecule and toward differences in the strength of the NO-adlayer attractive interaction as the origin of subtle changes in the scattering behavior from the low temperature substrates as a function of the incident translational energy. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The gastroduodenal epithelium is covered by an adherent mucus layer into which bicarbonate is secreted by surface epithelial cells. This mucus-bicarbonate barrier is an important first line of defence against damage by gastric acid and pepsin, and has been demonstrated in all species including human. Similar to gastric acid secretion, regulation of gastric and duodenal bicarbonate secretion can be divided into three phases: cephalic, gastric and duodenal. In humans, sham-feeding increases bicarbonate secretion in both the stomach and duodenum which is mediated by cholinergic vagal fibres in the stomach, but seems to be noncholinergic in the duodenum. Gastric distention and luminal acidification increases gastric bicarbonate production. Whereas there are no data relating to the gastric phase of human duodenal bicarbonate secretion, in animals, food and acid in the stomach independently stimulate duodenal bicarbonate output. To date, the duodenal phase of human gastric bicarbonate secretion has not been studied, but data from animals reveal that duodenal acidification augments bicarbonate secretion in the stomach. In all species tested, direct acidification of the duodenum is a potent stimulant of local bicarbonate production. In humans, the pH threshold for bicarbonate secretion is pH 3.0. Mediation of gastroduodenal bicarbonate secretion is provided by a variety of agonists and antagonists, tested mainly in animals, but some have been evaluated in humans. Prostaglandins of the E class and VIP are major factors that control bicarbonate secretion. Bicarbonate secretion, and the mucus-bicarbonate layer in general, is adversely effected by ulcerogenic factors such as aspirin, NSAIDs, bile salts, and cigarette smoking. Furthermore, duodenal ulcer patients have an impairment in bicarbonate production within the duodenal bulb, at rest and in response to stimulation. These findings indicate that the mucus-bicarbonate barrier is an important first line of defence in the pathogenesis of peptic ulcer disease.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper we introduce techniques that allow us to define a posteriori error estimators via well-known recovery techniques. These allow us to construct a posteriori error estimators for relatively general problems. Further, we introduce new adaptive procedures that make use of these estimators and, in particular, describe anh-p procedure that is simple to implement and that, as numerical experiments have shown, attains an accelerated rate of convergence expected from theh-p version.

    Notes: Abstract The characteristics of high repetition rate CVL devices incorporating passive external heating have been investigated. Pre-heating of the CVL plasma tube using external heating has been shown to significantly reduce CVL warm-up time, while supplementary heating of the CVL plasma tube using external heating allows efficient CVL operation with reduced discharge power input without any degradation in output power.

    Notes: An a-posteriori error estimator for finite element analysis proposed by Zienkiewicz and Zhu is analysed and shown to be effective and convergent. In addition we analyse wider classes of estimators of which the Zienkiewicz-Zhu estimator is a special case. It is shown that some of these estimators will be asymptotically exact. Numerical evidence is presented supporting the analysis.
