    Notes: Summary Dolichos biflorus agglutinin (DBA) binding was examined in 32 cases of intracranial human germcell tumors. In embryonal carcinomas, intense DBA binding sites were found on the free surface and cytoplasm of embryonal cells. In teratomas, glandular structures often had positive DBA binding sites. Yolk sac carcinomas and choriocarcinomas showed negative DBA affinity. Of 19 cases of germinomas, 10 showed no DBA-positive cells, while sporadically and/or collectively distributed-DBA positive cells were found in the other 9 cases. Common brain tumors such as gliomas, neurinomas and meningiomas were negative for DBA staining. Considering the cellular carbohydrate structure, these findings suggest that DBA-positive cells in germinoma might be evidence of differentiation into embryonal or some somatic components. In addition, because of the absence of DBA binding sites in the common brain tumors, the identification of such binding sites in brain tumors might act as a marker for embryonal or somatic components, especially among germ-cell tumors.

    Notes: Abstract The sterol composition of 23 species of coral-reef molluscs from Tahiti was investigated in relation to habitat and taxonomy. The elucidation of sterol components was performed by both argentation column and gas-liquid chromatographic techniques. Coral-reef molluscs, especially gastropods, seem to be characterised by sterols rich in 24-methylcholesterol.

    Notes: Abstract The sterol constituents of both coral and non-coral-reef animals (mollusks, coelenterates, echinoderms) have been investigated, and determined by gas-liquid chromatography and spectral analyses. All coral-reef animals examined contained larger amounts of C28-sterols, such as 24-methylcholesterol, than non-coral-reef animals. The seastar Acanthaster planci contains the same sterol constituents as some coral-reef coelenterates and mollusks, differing only in the position of the double bond in a steroid ring. This observation suggests the transport of dietary Δ5-sterols to Δ7-sterols through the food-chain in A. planci.

    Notes: Abstract  The critical S concentration and S requirement of the soil microbial biomass of a granitic regosol was examined. S was applied at the rate of 0, 5, 10, 20, 30 and 50 μg S as MgSO4·7H2O, together with either 3000 μg glucose-C or 3333 μg cellulose-C, 400 μg N, and 200 μg P g –1 soil and 200 μg K g–1 soil. Microbial biomass, inorganic SO4 2–-S, and CO2 emission were monitored over 30 days during incubation at 25  °C. Both glucose and cellulose decomposition rates responded positively to the S made available for microbial cell synthesis. The amounts of microbial biomass C and S increased with the level of applied S up to 10 μg S g–1 soil and 30 μg S g–1 soil in the glucose- and cellulose-amended soil, respectively, and then declined. Incorporated S was found to be concentrated within the microbial biomass or partially transformed into soil organic matter. The concentration of S in the microbial biomass was higher in the cellulose- (4.8–14.2 mg g–1) than in the glucose-amended soil (3.7–10.9 mg g–1). The microbial biomass C:S ratio was higher in the glucose- (46–142 : 1) than in the cellulose-amended soil (36–115 : 1). The critical S concentration in the microbial biomass (defined as that required to achieve 80% of the maximum synthesis of microbial biomass C) was estimated to be 5.1 mg g–1 in the glucose- and 10.9 mg g–1 in the cellulose-amended soil. The minimum requirement of SO4 2–-S for microbial biomass formation was estimated to be 11 μg S g–1 soil and 21 μg S g–1 soil for glucose- and cellulose-amended soil, respectively. The highest levels of activity of the microbial biomass were observed at the SO4 2–-S concentrations of 14 μg S g–1 soil and 17 μg S g–1 soil, for the glucose and cellulose amendments, respectively, and were approximately 31–54% higher during glucose than cellulose decomposition.

    Notes: Summary The authors reviewed 5 cases of histopathologically verified malignant cerebellar astrocytic tumours (2 anaplastic astrocytomas and 3 glioblastomas) in children admitted to our department. All cases exhibited symptoms and signs of increased intracranial pressure and of a cerebellar lesion. Brain stem symptoms were present in 4 cases. All of the tumours were located in or near the midline of the cerebellum with no large cyst. Surgical removal (70 to 90% removal) of the tumour was performed in 4 cases. In one case only a biopsy was done. Even with subsequent follow-up treatment including radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and/or immunotherapy, the course of the disease could not be reversed, and all of the children died 3 to 13 months (mean 7 months) after admission due to tumour re-growth or recurrence. Tumour dissemination along the walls of the ventricular system was seen in 2 cases, and was considered to be a peculiar, fatal form of tumour recurrence in patients with this type of tumour. Malignant cerebellar astrocytic tumours in children have an extremely poor prognosis. Until, improved therapy is available to counteract this tragic consequence, it will remain so.

    Notes: Summary Cranioplasty utilizing a resin-coated preserved autogenous skull flap was devised and used in 36 cases, 14 of them being followed up radiologically. It has been confirmed that this method is advantageous in that it repairs the skull defect satisfactorily both from surgical and cosmetic points of view. Furthermore this method causes no anxiety to the patient because of the autogenous origin of the bone flap. We recommend this method for cranioplasty when an autogenous bone flap is preserved.

    Notes: Summary Sixty-one patients with trigeminal neuralgia who underwent microvascular decompression were analysed. Vascular compression of the trigeminal nerve root was found in all cases. The recurrence rate of pain in this series was 18% with an average follow-up of 80 months (range: 13 to 126 months). Ten patients developed recurrence of their trigeminal neuralgia during follow-up. Fifteen factors, including the clinical and operative findings in the pain-free patients versus the 10 patients with recurrence were analysed. Only the patients with venous compression singly or in combination with arteries were significantly related to recurrence. There was no relationship between recurrence and the duration of symptoms or the degree of compression. Based on vascular compression as the sole cause of TN, the results and interesting findings can not be explained. With reference to the hypothesis that vascular compression is only one of at least two causative factors for the development of trigeminal neuralgia, it is suggested that the intrinsic lesion in trigeminal neuralgia may be responsible for late recurrence.
